Black History Month Read: The Light Always Breaks

384 pages Publisher Harper Muse Publication date July 5, 2022

ABOUT THE BOOK

As 1947 opens, Eva Cardon is the twenty-four-year-old owner of Washington, D.C.’s, most famous Black-owned restaurant. When her path crosses with Courtland, a handsome white senator from Georgia, both find themselves drawn to one another—but the danger of a relationship between a Black woman and a white man from the South could destroy them and everything they’ve worked for.

Few women own upscale restaurants in civil rights era Washington, D.C. Fewer still are twenty-four, Black, and wildly successful. But Eva Cardon is unwilling to serve only the wealthiest movers and shakers, and she plans to open a diner that offers Southern comfort to the working class.

A war hero and one of Georgia’s native sons, Courtland Hardiman Kingsley IV is a junior senator with great ambitions for his time in D.C. But while his father is determined to see Courtland on a path to the White House, the young senator wants to use his office to make a difference in people’s lives, regardless of political consequences.

When equal-rights activism throws Eva and Courtland into each other’s paths, they can’t fight the attraction they feel, no matter how much it complicates their dreams. For Eva, falling in love with a white Southerner is all but unforgivable—and undesirable. Her mother and grandmother fell in love with white men, and their families paid the price. Courtland is already under pressure for his liberal ideals, and his family has a line of smiling debutantes waiting for him on every visit. If his father found out about Eva, he’s not sure he’d be welcome home again.

Surrounded by the disapproval of their families and the scorn of the public, Eva and Courtland must decide if the values they hold most dear—including love—are worth the loss of their dreams . . . and everything else.

The author of When Stars Rain Down returns with a historical love story about all that has—and has not—changed in the United States

  • Historical romance set in civil rights era Washington, D.C.
  • Stand-alone novel
  • Book length: approximately 120,000 words
  • Includes discussion questions for book clubs

MY THOUGHTS

I’d give this more than five stars if I could, I just loved it. I could barely put it down.
It started out with a fiercely independent black woman. She owns one of the most prestigious D.C. restaurants in 1947.
At a New Years party there she meets a white politician from Georgia.
This turns into a forbidden romance that people on both sides try to dissuade each other from this romance.
This junior senator has high ambitions in D.C., and his father in his mind, already has him married off to one of the smiling white women and taking his first steps towards the presidency.
Falling in love with a white man is an unforgivable sin in her family’s eyes. Her mother and grandmother both did and the results weren’t favorable.
In this civil rights era novel, we see threats both verbal and physical aimed at the public’s displeasure of the relationship.
They must decide if them being together is worth possibly losing everything they hold dear or to let the chance at strength, compassion and not giving in to others wishes is worth it.
Fabulous read but heartbreaking. Will not easily be forgotten.

MY THOUGHTS

This is the third book in the Skylarks series and my first read in it. Somehow, I missed the other books, but I definitely need to remedy that.
The Skylarks are an air ambulance rescue crew that gets the worst cases.
I live in a rural area right across the street from a large community field that is used quite often for the helicopter rescue ambulance, so I get a firsthand view of the first responders and their work.

Seeing the air ambulance and its workers you get a true respect for those first responders and are so thankful for the lives they save. Reading about them is a whole other thing. It takes these workers and brings them into your life in a personal way and it humanizes them as we realize they have time away from work and cares and worries just like all of us do.

The author writes with her usual creativity bringing to life the characters in a way that you feel as though you know them and are in their lives.
When a baby is dropped off at the Skylarks building and a worker finds it this causes her to have many emotions brought to the forefront again. Emotions she had tampered down and hidden deep within herself.

There is family drama, confronting emotions and beautiful haling within herself and in her family. Such a well plotted and beautiful story the author writes from the heart, and this is just the kind of story I love. Uplifting, this is my favorite type of book.

Letters to Whitman: A Short Story

October 5, 2023 publication date Calleia Press publisher

ABOUT THE BOOK

“A moving, brilliantly conceived short piece… funny, grim, insightful” – Readers’ Favorite

“Highly recommended to Civil War aficionados, fans of Walt Whitman, and all those who appreciate beautiful writing.” – Renaissance Writer blog

During the American Civil War, the poet Walt Whitman volunteered in army hospitals tending to sick and wounded soldiers. This poignant short story imagines one of these patients, Private Nathaniel Gwynnett of the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry, writing to Whitman after returning to his regiment.

MY THOUGHTS

Though this is fictional I didn’t find it any less informative
Letters to Whitman follows the life of Private Nathaniel Gwynnett of the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry. He met poet Walt Whitman who volunteered in army hospitals in Washington when Nathaniel was a patient there. Walt boosted the moral of the men there and also brought small presents.

After returning to his regiment Nathaniel writes letters of daily life during the civil war and of their travels. Though there are good times there are also sorrows, losing friends, leaking tents, not enough to eat, etc.

Nathaniel uses these letters as a way to lift his spirit during battle as he tries to turn this into a friendship.
I do wish the book wasn’t all epistolary format though.

Two Nonfiction book reviews about dogs: All Dogs are Good and Bobby & Bubba’s Small Adventures

160 pages nonfiction Grand Central publishing November 9, 2021 publish date

ABOUT THE BOOK

Written for anyone who has known the touch of a cold nose on their hand, the bark of a best friend, or the joy of a walk accompanied by a wagging tail, All Dogs Are Good pays tribute to the special bond we share with our canine companions.Filled with heartfelt poems and prose on the love, dedication, and laughter our dogs bring, as well as the unique lessons they teach us along the way, bestselling author Courtney Peppernell’s vignettes of life with our dogs are a touching reminder of the gifts they give us during their journey on earth.Celebrating dogs everywhere, All Dogs Are Good is a collection dog lovers will hold in their hearts forever.

MY THOUGHTS

Such a well written and beautiful book. This is a work of nonfiction.
I was brought to tears multiple times as I read. This is a collection of poems and memories people have about their dogs. So many lovely memories and how much they enjoyed spending time with their dogs whether it was walking, snuggling or giving them treats. They all had great memories and miss them so much. It made me think about my dogs that are no longer with us and miss them too all the while having all the wonderful memories.

THE AUTHOR

76 pages Silverwood Books Nonfiction Pub Date 31 Jan 2023

ABOUT THE BOOK

The biggest celebrity cult since ‘Made in Chelsea’, Bob Marley and Roman Abramovich, the two brothers have already appeared on TV, magazines and their own Instagram page without letting on just how really naughty they are.

These are their little stories…written for children of all ages, particularly if you’re a parent looking for a way to break the vice-like grip of the iPhone and the internet on growing minds. They’re lovable, funny, poignant and even a tiny bit exciting – much like Bobby and Bubba themselves. Hope you love them as much as we all do!

MY THOUGHTS

I was instantly drawn to the cover when I saw it.
Bulldogs are cheeky and adorable, and they will certainly let you know what they want and don’t even try not giving it to them.
This nonfiction book is about British Bulldog brothers – Bobby and Bubba. They divide their time between the town (London) and the country (Warwickshire).
This famous duo is famous on television, magazines and of course social media.
The book is marketed for children, but I know adults enjoy it as well. With short chapters and it being adorably illustrated, it’s okay to read just one more chapter to your child at bedtime. I enjoy reading about these spoiled pups’ antics and seeing what they got up to.

THE AUTHOR

Although he has written extensively on political and economic topics, this is Anthony Coombs’ first foray into books. He was encouraged to do so by Bobby and Bubba themselves. Whilst relying on the “daddy” Alexander for their everyday needs, they insisted that “grandpa” Anthony use his dwindling literary skills to share with the world their “irresistible charm” and the adventures it gets them into. In any spare time Anthony gets from dog walking, he combines a career as chairman of a FTSE finance company with building houses and overseeing a charitable trust which supports children and young people with physical and mental disability challenges. Following his earlier incarnation as a Member of Parliament, Anthony also likes to write about current affairs. He loves both football where, despite his father once owning Birmingham City, he is an avid Aston Villa fan, as well as the fancy footwork required in ballet where he sits on the board of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Anthony likes to torture himself at golf, more gently in the gym and to take equal care of his soul as a practising Christian and trustee of Premier Christian Media. Most important of all, he is the proud husband of thirty-eight years to Andrea, and of course the father of B and B’s daddy, Alexander. –This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Have you read any nonfiction books recently? I don’t read many but do need to remedy this.

Have a wonderful weekend. Thanks for stopping in.

2023 christmas songs book tag

This is my first year doing the Christmas Songs Book Tag hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl and I’m excited to see what I can come up with. I hope you’ll join in the fun.

1. “All I Want for Christmas Is You”: Favorite bookish couple.
Lauren Fox and Asa Williamson in

2. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”: Name a book where a character is away from home (school, vacation, etc.).
 Ann Kirby in

3. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”: Name your favorite “little” book (children’s book, short story, novella, etc.).
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. I absolutely loved to read this to my children.

4. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town“: What book(s) do you hope Santa brings you this year?

The new Jody Hedlund books.

5. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”: Which book turned your nose red (made you cry)?

The Royal Daughter

6. “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”: Your favorite book/kind of book to read during the holidays.
Historical and romantic Christmas books like this one, Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop

7. “We Three Kings”: Your favorite trilogy/book from a trilogy (or feel free to fudge it and pick a book from a series).
I’m going with a series and so far, only two books have been released but I am pretty sure there will be three.

8. “Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow”: A character you would love to be snowed in with.
Since I’m a happily married woman, I wouldn’t want to be snowed in with a male. I’d choose Kitty, an older woman from On Moonberry Lake. We could have some very interesting conversations.

9. “Last Christmas”: A book that seriously let you down.
I wouldn’t say this book seriously let me down, but I didn’t think it was as good as the other books in this series.

10. “White Christmas”: An upcoming release you’re dreaming about.

I’ve started this book but have put it aside because it doesn’t release until April 2024. It’s super good and I can’t wait until I get a chance to finish it.

Which books would you choose for these songs? Merry Christmas.
