Claws Out: A Cat Cafe Mystery (Cat Cafe Mystery Series Book 9)

298 pages Publisher St. Martin’s Paperbacks Publication date August 26, 2025

ABOUT THE BOOK

After a long, snowy winter on Daybreak Island, Maddie and her cat cafe crew are finally ready to embrace the spring, though life is anything but calm. With Val and Ethan’s wedding taking center stage, Maddie finds herself juggling wedding plans alongside a new and unexpected venture—a generous donation has made her the co-owner of a traveling cat cafe truck. To kick off the new chapter, she seizes the chance to take the truck on its inaugural trip to a cat literary festival in Provincetown, accompanied by her family and some of the shelter crew.

The festival is organized by the renowned cat-romance author Jasmine Prescott, who also runs a beloved cat rescue foundation on Cape Cod. But when Jasmine’s longtime friend and fellow author Vivi St. Clair arrives with a boatload full of drama—everything from a dangerous ex-husband to an unwanted Netflix crew—tensions run high. At first, it seems like just another dose of celebrity chaos—until Vivi is found murdered. As new evidence ties Maddie and her cat cafe into the investigation, Maddie must dig deeper into the tangled web of secrets, rivalries, and feline-friendly drama to uncover the truth. The question is: what’s the connection between the cat cafe and Vivi’s untimely death?

MY THOUGHTS

‘ve really been enjoying the Cat Cafe mystery series, and this is book nine. Though I haven’t read them in order each story is a standalone so it’s fine.
A harsh winter has the owners/workers of the cat cafe more than ready to welcome spring.
This book actually takes place off the island, Daybreak Island off of the New England coast.
Cat cafe owner Maddie and her cat JJ are thrilled they have a donated van that they’ll be using as a mobile cat cafe van. Taking it on the road to an exciting cat literacy fair where authors are selling books devoted to, of course cats.
The cat cafe on wheels is a huge hit and adoptions are made. The authors seem so warm and welcoming to each other, but when a literary artist winds up dead is there more than just coffee brewing behind the scenes.
Lots of drama unfolds and there may just be a cat fight in the works.
Loving this series. It keeps me on my toes and I’m enjoying the main characters.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

(Christmas) Shock and Paw: A Cat Cafe Mystery (Cat Cafe Mystery Series, 8)

320 pages Publisher St. Martin’s Paperbacks Publication date August 20, 2024

ABOUT THE BOOK

The eighth installment in a charming cozy mystery series set on an island off the New England coast and featuring the cat cafe owner Maddie and her cat JJ.

Beware the cats of Christmas past…

It’s the holiday season on Daybreak Island, and Maddie James is looking forward to stepping out of the limelight, watching the island’s Christmas decoration competition from afar, spending time with her boyfriend and family, running tours for visitors as part of the festivities and spreading holiday cheer through cute cats in jingle bell collars.

But trouble hits close to home when word gets out that Donna Carey, the publisher of the island’s only daily newspaper where Maddie’s best friend Becky is editor, may be selling the business. Becky is a diehard journalist and to her, selling the only newspaper on the island is a fate worse than death. She publicly opposes the potential sale, wreaking havoc on her relationship with her big boss.

Maddie is sympathetic, but she has her own problems – like getting pulled into a role on the Christmas event committee despite her best efforts to stay far removed, and solving the case of a mysterious cat breeder trying to sell expensive designer cats as holiday gifts on the island. But then Donna winds up dead―electrocuted by her own Christmas decorations―and it appears to be more than an accident. To make matters worse, Becky becomes suspect number one. Maddie is thrown into another murder investigation in order to save her best friend from a Christmas behind bars.

MY THOUGHTS

Shock and Paw is the eighth book in the Cat Cafe mystery series.
Christmas time should be relaxing and pleasant on Daybreak Island off the New England Coast but it’s anything but as it often tends to be around Christmas time.
Once again Grandpa Leo and granddaughter Maddie have a mystery to solve there’s a Christmas decorating contest and the cat cafe owners, grandpa and Maddie are in the thick of it again solving the crime. Talk of selling the island’s only newspaper have some pretty upset and the newspaper owner is found with Christmas lights around her neck. Could it be the last person seen arguing with her trying to persuade her not to sell or perhaps the electrician doing work to get the Christmas lights to shine. Whoever it is certainly doesn’t have the Christmas spirit this island is used to.
Another great book in the cat cafe series that I’m enjoying.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

Gone but Not Furgotten: A Cat Cafe Mystery (Cat Cafe Mystery Series, 6)

Version 1.0.0

304 pages Publisher St. Martin’s Griffin Publication date

June 28, 2022

ABOUT THE BOOK

In Gone but Not Furgotten, the sixth in Cate Conte’s Cat Café beloved cozy mystery series, Daybreak Island has a killer on the loose…and this villain isn’t afraid to use their claws.

Maddie James has big plans for the summer season at JJ’s House of Purrs. But when her friend, master meditator and Tai Chi teacher Cass Hendricks, brings a potential animal hoarding situation to her attention, Maddie has to refocus her attention on the furry felines who may need a helping paw.

Cass has brought his Zen teachings to Fisherman’s Cove―a tiny, working class town on Daybreak Island―and one of his students, Laurel, has been on the receiving end more than one hissy fit from her neighbors, mostly because of her cats. When Maddie and Cass go to Laurel’s to check out the situation, not only do they find a plethora of cats in need, but also a dead body. Laurel appears to have had an unfortunate accident falling down her stairs, but Maddie gets a sneaking suspicion that something more sinister might be behind her death. When she voices her concerns, she’s horrified that it’s Cass who falls under suspicion.

With Grandpa Leo’s help, Maddie has to dig into the secrets this small community is keeping close to find out why Laurel really died before Cass is put behind bars . . . or the killer strikes again.

MY THOUGHTS

Number 6 in the Cat Cafe mystery series.
I really enjoy this series, and this is the first of four I need to read to catch up with the series.
Grandpa is retired law enforcement and has allowed his granddaughter to create a cat cafe in part of his house while he still lives there. there are tasty treats available there and cats for adoption. We just had a cat cafe open up a few months ago near us and I think it’s a wonderful idea.
JJ’s House of Purrs is the cat cafe and Maddie; the granddaughter is running it along with her sleepy-eyed cat JJ who approves the cats that come in for adoption.
Grandpa Leo is ready to dig into a murder case on the tiny island of Daybreak. A woman has kept secrets no one knows about she is a cat hoarder. It’s a very tricky subject, when does cat rescuing and helping the cats turn into hoarding. It can turn into hoarding if the rescue takes in too many or the cats are breeding from non-spaying and neutering. So many times, a rescue association starts out with the best of intentions before things start going sideways.
The rescue woman is found dead, and many cats need rescued with grandpa and Maddie on the case.
I wasn’t able to guess who it was even though they were talking to a lot of suspects including maintenance people, neighbors and relatives of the deceased.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.
This series is enjoyable has kept my attention and I’m looking forward to reading more in it.

Thank you for stopping in.

A Very Furry Christmas: Holiday Cat Tales

Version 1.0.0

68 pages Publication date November 20, 2015

ABOUT THE BOOK

Finalist in the 2016 Royal Palm Literary Award Competition. (Florida Writers Association)

Dear Reader: Please be aware that this is not a children’s book.

Slipper’s Last Breath

For most people Christmas is a time for reflection, a time to share and celebrate with family and friends, but for some it is a time of sadness and quiet desperation. What if your soul mate, best friend and lover is no longer around to share in the season of joy and you are about to lose the last remaining link to a life you once knew and loved. Would you find the strength to survive?
Slipper’s Last Breath is a story about love, companionship and triumph over tragedy.

Some might call it a Christmas miracle, but I call it the power of unconditional love.

The Unwrapped Gift

Sometimes the best gifts are the unexpected ones. After enduring the heartbreak of a bad marriage, Beth is in no mood to celebrate the Christmas season. It’s sad enough spending the holidays alone, but watching Spice, her five-year-old Labrador retriever, mope around the house was more than she could bear. A visit to Miller’s tree farm to cheer up her canine companion leads to an unexpected find and the possibility of a new found relationship.

When she least expects it, Beth rediscovers love and the magic of Christmas.

A Charcoal Christmas

She was born under the loading dock behind Johnson’s Market and lost her mother when she was only five weeks old. One of a litter of six, she and her siblings had to learn to fend for themselves at a young age. The life expectancy of a feral cat is short, but thanks to the generosity of a compassionate store owner, the kittens were well fed and enjoying their lives. Then one day a stranger appears and takes her away from the safety of her kin. Confused and frightened, she is forced to endure an uncaring human and ultimately the forces of nature, in hopes of returning to the ones she loves.

A Charcoal Christmas is a bittersweet tale of survival, hope and loving companionship.

Christmas Mourning

A troubled priest struggling with doubts about his faith and vocation has an unexpected encounter with a stray, weather-beaten black cat. When Father Pedro decides to provide warmth and shelter for the lost creature, he has no idea how this simple act of kindness will impact his life forever.

A fluffy gray cat sitting on a snowy wooden dock during a golden sunset.
A long-haired gray cat finds a cozy spot on a snowy dock as the golden sun sets over a winter harbor.

MY THOUGHTS

I get review requests, actually multiple review requests daily. With how many I have I haven’t replied to all of them, but when the author approached me about this one I couldn’t resist. Why? Maybe it was the appealing cover, the fact it is about animals, mainly cats or that these take place around Christmas time. Whatever the reasoning behind it I am glad I took the chance on it.
These are novella length stories taking place during the Christmas/wintertime season.
In each of these there is a human that is going through grief/troubles. We all do at some point, and a cat gives these people the boost they need to see they can have a better/brighter future. I love the bond/connection we as humans have with our pets. They really are in tune with us and comfort us just when we need them to. I loved these uplifting stories and recommend them. Now I would love to read other books by the author.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

Can’t Wait Wednesday!

CAN’T WAIT WEDNESDAY

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these posts so I thought it would be fun to get back into it again!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally, they’re books that have yet to be released. Find out more here.

This week I am waiting for a book I was just approved for today on NetGalley.

320 pages Publisher Thomas Nelson Publication date August 4, 2026

ABOUT THE BOOK

From USA TODAY bestselling author Kathleen Fuller comes a cozy, kisses-only romance about fresh starts, fall leaves, and finding love right next door, perfect for fans of Gilmore Girls and Sarah Adams.

Via Dalton has sworn off men to focus on the two things she loves most: her quirky cat café, Pawsitive Vibes, and the charming town of Pecan Corner, Ohio. But her peaceful world is shaken when Earl Brewster, the owner of the beloved Second Chapter Books next door, passes away. Via is determined to buy the shop and preserve Earl’s legacy, but her plans hit a snag in the form of a tall, handsome, and completely unexpected heir.

Leo Brewster’s life is thriving in LA, and the last thing he needs is an inheritance in the middle-of-nowhere, Ohio. But the alternative–letting his estranged mother inherit–has him packing his bags to receive the inheritance, quickly sell it off to the highest bidder, and hightail it back to LA. What he didn’t count on was the list of stipulations in the will that has him staying in the small town for a month. Oh, and the determined, sunny café owner next door who refuses to let him destroy the town’s heart without a fight.

Desperate to convince Leo the bookstore is vital to her community, Via challenges Leo to complete her Autumn Bucket List. As they navigate corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and fall festivals, Leo begins to see the magic in Pecan Corner–and in Via. Despite her vow to stay single and his plan to leave, the attraction between them simmers like hot cider.

Can a season of small-town charm convince a city boy to stay, or will Via lose both the bookstore and her heart?

Grab a warm drink and curl up with this delightful grumpy/sunshine, opposites-attract story of unexpected love and small-town charm.

Have a wonderful day!

Nonfiction: The Bull in the Darkness and the One-Eyed Dog: Scenes from the Life of a Country Veterinarian

184 pages Publisher Lyons Press Publication date May 15, 2023

ABOUT THE BOOK

Amazon link

Dr. Robert Sharp tells remarkable, highly readable, and true stories of a country vet’s encounters with animal patients of all kinds, their equally unusual if not unique owners, and the flavorful rural settings they inhabit. The Bull in the Darkness and the One-Eyed Dog is a collection of his most memorable country animal cases—many funny, some almost unbelievable, and some thought-provoking.

MY THOUGHTS

Growing up reading the James Herriot books I realized how much I enjoyed reading books about country veterinarians and the animals they treat.
This veterinarian book takes place in Ohio, mainly the countryside.
The vet bought the practice from a man who practiced with his father and now this vet practices with his son. Over one hundred years of vets practicing from the same building and local countryside area of Hillsboro, Ohio
Stories of his remembrance from practicing starting out pretty primitive compared to today’s practicing vets. Today’s animals have a much better chance of survival with all the technological advances in medicine.
And what you pay reflects that which leads to so many unfortunately having to choose euthanasia rather than the continuation of medical treatment.
A poignant tale with many fascinating cases presented like the time he visited an Amish farmer at 3 a.m. to stitch up a bull by lantern light.
The dog that was one eyed and reduced in price because no one wanted him, entered in a contest and became the town sensation.
Many more tales like this. Very enjoyable book.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Rob Sharp is a lifelong Ohio resident. Born in Niles, he received his A.B. in Zoology, and M.A. in Aquatic Ecology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He then served in the U.S. Air Force for the next five years as a KC-135 instructor/evaluator navigator with the 17th Bomb Wing of Strategic Air Command, and is a Vietnam veteran. He left the Air Force to attend The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, received his D.V.M. degree in 1979 and has practiced in southern Ohio since graduation.

Rob’s first book, No Dogs in Heaven?, was published to resounding critical acclaim. It was also translated into Czech. An alert editor in New York read the book and asked him to write a column–“Ask a Country Vet”– for the popular magazine Country Living. His expert and delightfully written answers to questions from readers across the country were read by millions during the five years he served as Country Living’s “country vet.”

MY THOUGHTS

I am a real animal lover. I am even a vegetarian. Having read many nonfiction animal books with sad endings I haven’t read a nonfiction animal book in years as I am very hesitant to read them and get sad. But……….. for some reason I was drawn to this book. Little Reba is adorable, and I really couldn’t resist reading her story.
After Reba’s accident her owner is highly dedicated to her. And we follow along on her journey to wellness through many sleepless nights for owner and her dog both. It made me happy to see the devotion the owner has to her dog through good days and bad. This little dog is so smart and gave it her all trying to heal and get back to normal. Very encouraging book! Highly recommended book, I just loved it!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

Blog Tour for Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage by Della Galton

ABOUT THE BOOK

Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage

Can love conquer all?

Jade and Finn are idyllically happy in their little corner of rural Wiltshire. A rescue centre jampacked with animals keeps them super busy. With Finn’s art going from strength to strength, Jade can’t believe they’re living the dream until an arrogant property developer with questionable motives jeopardises their perfect lives and the future plans of the rescue centre.

Jade and Finn both have trust issues and they’ve promised there’ll be no more secrets. But keeping promises is harder than either of them imagined, especially where Finn’s past is concerned.

Living with Mr Spock the potty-mouthed parrot and Mickey the dog who barks at TV baddies there’s never a dull moment at Duck Pond Rescue. But will the humans get their ‘happy-ever-after’ too?
Can they lay the ghosts of the past to rest and find a bright new future together?

MY THOUGHTS

Simply fantastic. This is a series I try not to miss any of the stories in it and I’ve read quite a few by this author. I’ve read quite a few romance books and though this is one, I love that this series focuses on animal rescue as I am a big animal person. I really hope this series inspires others to help animals in some way even if by volunteering, donating goods, time or money, or even adoption or fostering animals.

We have our lovely couple Jade and Finn living in rural Wiltshire. Each are settled in with their own things to keep them busy, he’s an artistic painter, she runs the animal rescue with the help of some lovely volunteers and Finn as well.

I do have to say I did find humor in Mr. Spock; the rescue center resident parrot who would say things at the most inconvenient times.
Jade and Finn promised each other no more secrets but things have come up they’ve found hard to talk to each other about.

As the book progresses, we are introduced to some quirky characters and a turn happened I just didn’t see coming. Heartwarming and emotional I greatly look forward to reading more by the author.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

Cloaked in Beauty: (A Christian Western Historical Romance Fairy Tale Retelling of Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty) (Texas Ever After)

352 pages Bethany House Publishers December 17, 2024 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

Trust no one in the shadows of the piney woods . . .

Letty Hood has spent the last fifteen years of her life hidden away with her grandmother in the backwoods of east Texas to escape the deadly schemes of an uncle who wants her dead. Now, with her twenty-first birthday on the horizon, she is forced to accept the escort of a stranger and return to Houston in secret so she can claim a birthright that will make her one of the wealthiest women in Texas. If she lives long enough to inherit.

Pinkerton agent Philip Carmichael has one duty: get the Radcliffe heiress home alive. Expecting a spoiled girl, Philip is surprised to encounter a woman of rare strength with a kind soul and keen wit. As they journey together, Letty’s resilience wins his admiration, breaking through his hardened cynicism. Yet the threat to her survival grows more menacing with every mile, and Philip fears that keeping Letty out of harm’s way may be just as impossible as keeping her out of his heart.

MY THOUGHTS

Cloaked in Beauty by Karen Witemeyer is the author’s retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood story. I’ll admit I liked her version much better, with the author’s usual laugh out loud humor added her quirky characters and we can’t forget the wolf (Rusty) is it okay to have a wolf as a favorite character and the fairytale like settings the story is magical. From the mansion to going into hiding and the magical forest to roam in with her wolf I was totally captivated.

I think we all need a Philip Carmichael in our lives, a Pinkerton agent he is tasked with finding Letty after she has been in hiding for many years and escorting her home safely. Though he tries not to show it he is captivated by Letty and will do everything in his power to keep her safe.

As the danger unfolds mile after mile with their perilous journey the only one who can keep them safe is letting God take control of this situation.
Will Phillip be free to admit his feelings for Letty or will his formal training keep them apart?

I loved this retelling and greatly look forward to more books in the series.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
