Dreaming of Flight: An unexpected friendship between an elderly woman and a young boy

304 pages Lake Union Publishing May 3, 2022 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

An unexpected connection becomes the saving grace for two unlikely friends in a heart-stirring novel about love, loss, and moving forward by a New York Times and #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author.

Never knowing his parents, eleven-year-old Stewie Little and his brother have been raised on a farm by their older sister. Stewie steadfastly tends the chickens left by his beloved late grandmother. And every day Stewie goes door to door selling fresh eggs from his wagon―a routine with a surprise just around the corner. It’s his new customer, Marilyn. She’s prickly and guarded, yet comfortably familiar―she reminds the grieving Stewie so much of the grandmother he misses more than he can express.

Marilyn has a reason for keeping her distance: a secret no one knows about. Her survival tactic is to draw a line between herself and other people―one that Stewie is determined to cross. As their visits become more frequent, a complicated but deeply rooted relationship grows. That’s when Stewie discovers how much more there is to Marilyn, to her past, and to challenges that become more pressing each day. But whatever difficult times lie ahead, Stewie learns that although he can’t fix everything for Marilyn or himself, at least he’s no longer alone.

MY THOUGHTS

This is a book I put off reading because I knew it would break my heart when I read it and it did, but it was also healed the more I read. Dealing with love, loss and moving on.

Dreaming of Flight is about an eleven-year-old boy as our main character. He’s dealt with an unbelievable amount of loss in his short life: his parents shortly after his birth so he doesn’t remember them and his grandmothers. He and his disabled brother are being raised by his adult sister. Though she does the best she can she works a lot, and he is lonely.

To keep his Gran’s memory alive, he is continuing to raise her chickens and sell the eggs they lay.
His family desperately needs the egg money, and he gets to meet some neat people on his egg route.

One of his new customers is an elderly woman named, Marilyn. She reminds him so much of his grandmother and she seems to enjoy his company just as much. An unexpected friendship starts up with benefits to both. He visits her even when he’s not selling eggs and when she gets in trouble with the law for a secret, she’s been keeping he’s there every step of the way.

This touches of loss of independence for older adults. Many think children don’t realize certain things because of their age but I believe children are much more perceptive than we give them credit for.

This is a heartwarming full of depth story about a young boy, his adoptive grandmother and an awareness many of us as adults miss.

Highly recommended!

A Token of Love: (A Victorian London Split-Time Christian Historical Romance Novel)

384 pages Bethany House Publishers Sep 3,2024 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

Separated by centuries, the lives of two women intertwine through their shared pursuit of love, truth, and justice.

In 1885 London, Lillian Freemont embarks on a treacherous journey to reunite with her long-lost niece, Alice, who was abandoned at the Foundling Hospital eight years ago. Fueled by her sister’s plea and armed with the gold token that identifies her niece, Lillian teams up with investigative reporter Matthew McGivern to expose the grim reality of the shadowed streets of London. As Lillian and Matthew unravel the mystery of Alice’s disappearance, their partnership blossoms into one of shared purpose and undeniable attraction.

In present-day London, Janelle Spencer finds herself unexpectedly running the Foundling Museum. When filmmaker Jonas Conrad arrives to document the museum’s history, their collaboration takes a surprising turn as they uncover articles from the past that shed light on a haunting connection to the present. As Janelle becomes caught between exposing the truth and protecting the museum’s reputation, she must decide if she can risk everything for what she believes.

MY THOUGHTS

This is a dual timeline historical fiction. Split between 1885 and present day.
Though a split timeline there are many connecting factors and things that were relevant in the latter time are still very relevant today.

1885 London: The Foundling Hospital is supposed to be a safe house for children of bad circumstances but when young girls are disappearing from there with no records being kept and without a trace there is an investigation. When some of the children are placed in the Foundling Hospital, they are brought in with a golden token identifying them so they can be reclaimed at a later date. As the investigation continues, we get a taste of the seedy underhanded ways some people operate and the dangerous ways of the streets.

2023 London: Now the Foundling Museum, I found this interesting the documentation of the Foundling Hospital and what happened to some of its. As more is uncovered and comes to light it may not show the Foundling Museum in its best light. Now the question is how to keep investigating and not spoil the reputation of the museum.

I enjoyed immensely the research that was put into this as it is based on historical facts. Informative and interesting. Well written!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Best Is Yet To Come

Emma is having a fresh start.

After a successful teaching career, an exciting new chapter awaits Emma – helping her fiancé Grayson run one of Beatrix Potter’s farms. While imagining days spent supporting Grayson with his dream, working the land and helping with the animals, Emma harvests a dream of her own – to set up an alpaca-walking business around the farm.

But working together isn’t as easy as Emma expected. Soon her dreams are in tatters and, broken-hearted, she must start over yet again.

When Oliver, Rosie and the team at Willowdale Hall welcome Emma with open arms, she can’t believe her luck. But starting a new business in a new place is a daunting prospect, especially when it comes with unexpected obstacles. With a reserved, prickly groundskeeper as a partner, rapidly changing family dynamics to contend with, and time running out to get her new career off the ground, Emma may have bitten off more than she can chew.

But even though things are not going to plan just yet, the best is yet to come for Emma, if she can just take a leap of faith and follow her heart…

Escape to the Lake District with million-copy bestseller Jessica Redland, for an uplifting story of family, friendship and love.

MT THOUGHTS

I am immensely enjoying the new Lake District series by Jessica Redland. I really enjoyed her hedgehog series and now this series has alpacas. A series that has animals is a surefire winner.

This book is sweet, romantic and enduring but yet has a serious side as well. With so many twists and turns and it’s not even a mystery I couldn’t stop turning pages because I just knew I had to know what happened next and then after that. With a marriage that went bad and another romance after that that wasn’t right it’s time for fresh starts.

The story has an everchanging landscape and we get questions answered from the previous book in the series. I loved seeing all the change not only for our main character but others as well. The many changes going on in the book leads to many side stories not involving our main character but they are just as interesting and I’m assuming we’ll see these explored more in future books.

Fun, realistic, romantic but written with a serious side as well, filled with empathy.
An emotional and uplifting page turner that I’m looking forward to reading more of the upcoming series.

I was given a complimentary copy of the book.

Stacking the Shelves

STACKING THE SHELVES

Saturday again and that means another Stacking The Shelves post hosted at Reading Reality. This is a post to share which books we’ve received this week, may it be by mail, library, NetGalley, arc from an author, bought, borrowed or some other way of acquiring it.

Once again, we are having rain here in Pennsylvania. Once that lets up, we’ll have cooler more Fall like temperatures here in Pennsylvania. I’ve not done a lot of reading this week as I’ve been doing some deep cleaning of the house now that it’s not so humid. By deep cleaning I mean cleaning walls and wiping down the wood trim. Stuff that you’re more than happy to ignore most of the time.

Anyways, on to my acquired books this past week.

RECEIVED FROM NETGALLEY

Maybe it would be better if NetGalley didn’t love me so much? LOL

BOOK MAIL THIS WEEK

And what have you added to your reading stack this week? Thanks for stopping in and have a relaxing day.

The Birdcage by Eve Chase: Gothic thriller, some secrets need to be set free

368 pages G.P. Putnam’s Sons publisher July 19, 2022 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

In the spirit of Lisa Jewell and Kate Morton, an emotional mystery set in the rugged remote landscape of north Cornwall full of dark secrets and twists, about three unusual sisters forced to confront the past.

Some secrets need to be set free…

When half-sisters Kat, Flora, and Lauren are unexpectedly summoned to Rock Point, their wild and remote Cornish summer home, it’s not a welcome invitation. They haven’t been back since that fateful summer twenty years ago—a summer they’re desperate to forget.

But when they arrive, it’s clear they’re not alone. Someone is lurking in the shadows, watching their every move. Someone who remembers exactly what they did…

Will the sisters be able to protect the dark past of Rock Point? Or are some secrets too powerful to remain under lock and key?

MY THOUGHTS

Told from alternating points of view and in different time periods. Three half-sisters their connection being their father. Jealousy is rampant amongst the sisters who haven’t seen each other in twenty years.

This Gothic thriller is full of secrets, secrets the women are desperate to forget but they must face once again. Why were the women summoned to the rugged Cornish home where the walls have eyes and someone unseen hears all.

Will desperation force them to do something they would never have thought of doing to keep things quiet? Hard to put down, I had to keep reading this intriguing read.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

Book Birthday Blitz for Mistletoe Moments by Stephanie Wood, a festive novella.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Mistletoe Moments (Christmas on The Close #5)

You are invited to spend CHRISTMAS ON THE CLOSE where each of the neighbours are celebrating in their own special way.

Veronica and Owen are looking forward to a happy Christmas on The Close with their friends and neighbours.

Their son, Travis, is due to take some important exams, but will he be able to concentrate when a serious crush derails his schedule?

As their fortieth birthdays approach, some significant celebration will be required, but how can Veronica agree to Owen’s life-changing request?

The fifth standalone episode of ‘Christmas on The Close’ shows how sharing a treasured life with someone does not necessarily result in sharing the same treasured dreams.

MY THOUGHTS

Set at Christmas time though I feel this novella would be a fun read any time of the year. The Close is all about neighbors and this one feature Veronica and Owen and their son Travis. The couple are approaching forty. Though a couple they don’t have the same dreams. Their son Travis is growing up before their eyes, where has the time gone? No longer a child, but not quite grown he’s in a different life stage than them and they’re having a hard time relating to each other. We get a glimpse of life with the other neighbors, and I’m intrigued enough to want to read the other stories in this series now as well. Heartwarming and fun. A great read!

Blog Tour for Last Christmas by Clare Swatman

ABOUT THE BOOK

Last Christmas

‘Bea was always early for everything. Even, it turned out, when she was running away from her life.’

As Christmas approaches, Bea Preston has a choice.

Looking up at the departures board in Heathrow airport, her flight to New York boarding soon, she knows that getting on that plane changes everything. Her life in London has grown stale, her relationship with boyfriend Dom has run its course, and New York has always been her dream. But it’s a risk – she’ll miss her parents, her friends, her job.

What if Bea could live both lives? In one she goes back home for Christmas, and in another she heads to the Big Apple. Would her fate remain the same, or can one decision really change everything?

In a grand sliding-doors love story that spans oceans, years and lives, Clare Swatman’s unforgettable tale of fate and friendship is perfect for all fans of Jojo Moyes, Beth Moran and Ruth Jones.

MY THOUGHTS

With not much time for Christmas celebrations Bea is off to New York several days after the holidays. Bea’s life is hectic and certainly doesn’t always go as she’s planned.

Decisions………, we all make them every day. How do we know if they’re the right ones, or not. How about those decisions we regret and think on after our choice. Wondering if we could’ve kicked those bad decisions under the rug and chosen again, would things have been better?

There is a show of strong family support and close friendships. On again off again romantic relationships and finding the perfect one to be with.
The New York energetic vibe is strong, covering the early 2000’s from finding that perfect pub to the busy streets and the small flats to the busy rushing about.

A book women can identify with, emotional with strong characters you’ll see a bit of yourself in. A keeper that I’ll be reading again.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
