The Little Island Secret: An absolutely gripping and heartbreaking page-turner

300 pages Publication date Jul 21 2021 Bookouture publisher

ABOUT THE BOOK

t the bottom of the meadow is a tiny crescent of beach, and beyond it the wild grey sea. I’ve pictured this view in my head so many times, and now I’m here, I know it will change everything. The whitewashed cottage with a peeling green painted door to my right must be his house…

When Abby steps off the ferry and onto the tiny island of Kinlossay, she squeezes her daughter’s hand and prays this trip will be the escape they both so desperately need. For now, at least, Beth is safe from the bullies making her life a misery, and perhaps Abby might find out more about the mysterious man behind the letters she’s been receiving…

Cameron first got in touch to see if Abby’s shop stocked his favourite book. And has written every day since to tell her of his life on his rugged little island, where buttercups dance on rolling fields and the sky never stops moving. The weekend he once came to visit her – singing with Beth in the kitchen, kissing Abby’s lips so tenderly – is a memory she will treasure forever. But then, one day, the messages stopped. Abby received the heartbreaking news that Cameron had passed away.

As she watches her daughter run laughing along the windswept beaches he described so perfectly, Abby wonders if this goodbye trip could also be a new beginning. But then she sees a face across the street that she recognises instantly, and her heart shatters. If Cameron is dead, who is this man? What devastating secrets has this little island been keeping? The truth will change Abby and her daughter’s life forever – but only if they let it…

MY THOUGHTS

The Little Island Secret is a book I thought I’d like more than I did.
I very much enjoyed the bookshop setting in Scotland.
Cameron first contacts Abby to see if she has a hard to locate book writing every day after to tell her of his belove island with the waves crashing and its breathtaking view.
They fell in love, and he even came to visit once with her daughter loving him too as they sang and laughed.
Devastated she finds out he has passed away when the letters stop. She knows she must go to the island to get closure taking her daughter along.
The description of the island is breathtaking but the secrets the island harbors left me feeling unsettled as they were revealed. I can understand why it was done but would I have done it, no.
The book felt much longer than it was, it was a slog to get through.
There were parts I enjoyed a lot about the book and others felt unrealistic as I couldn’t make a connection with most of the characters.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

MEET THE AUTHOR

After a varied career, Emma Davies once worked for a design studio where she was asked to provide a fun and humorous (and not necessarily true) anecdote for their website. She wrote the following: ‘I am a bestselling novelist currently masquerading as a thirty something mother of three.’ Well the job in the design studio didn’t work out but she’s now a forty something mother of three and is happy to report the rest of her dream came true.

After many years as a finance manager she now writes full time, and is far happier playing with words than numbers. She lives with her husband, three children, and two guinea pigs in rural Shropshire where she writes in all the gaps in between real life. It’s a county she adores, her love of its beautiful people and landscapes providing endless inspiration for her books, and in fact the only thing that would make Shropshire more idyllic is if it were by the sea.

Pop over to her website http://www.emmadaviesauthor.com where, amongst other things, you can read about her passion for Pringles and singing loudly in the car. You can also wave to her on twitter @EmDaviesAuthor or find her on Facebook (a little too often than is good for her).

The Indigo Heiress: (A Marriage of Convenience Historical Romance Novel Set in 1700s Colonial America and Scotland)

416 pages Publisher Revell Publication date January 21, 2025

ABOUT THE BOOK

Virigina plantation life is all she has ever known.
But could the life she was meant to live be waiting on a distant shore?

In 1774, Juliet Catesby lives with her father and sister at Royal Vale, the James River plantation founded by her Virginia family over a century before. Indigo cultivation is her foremost concern, though its export tethers her family to the powerful Buchanan clan of Glasgow, Scotland.

When the heir of the Buchanan firm arrives on their shores, Juliet discovers that her father has arranged for one of his daughters to marry the Scot as a means of canceling the family’s crippling debt. Confident it will be her younger, lovelier sister, Juliet is appalled when Leith Buchanan selects her instead.

Despite her initial refusal, Juliet realizes that fleeing Virginia is her only choice after finding herself in the midst of a scandal. The ship just leaving the harbor for Glasgow is her only hope. But she will soon realize that being part of the complex and calculating Buchanan clan is not the sanctuary she imagined–and the man who saved her from ruin is the very one she must now save in return.

MY THOUGHTS

What an exciting journey I took while reading this book. The author always writes fascinating well researched historical fiction this one taking us from the tobacco fields of Virginia to Scotland.

Rich in history, the James River plantation in Virgina is home to Juliet Catesby, her sister and father. Indigo is cultivated on their plantation along with other crops common in 1774.
Unknown to Juliet the plantation is not faring well, and her father is in terrible debt.

A member of the Buchanan clan of Glasgow, Scotland arrives on the shores to marry one of the plantation daughters. Juliet surely believes it’ll be her younger sister.

Leith Buchanan is a widower with two young children after his wife’s passing, he knows he will not marry without love this time.
The sea voyages I really enjoy reading about. Lots of detail that could have you envisioning yourself on this long journey.

As Juliet and Leith spend more time in each other’s company we can see this will become a lifelong journey of faith, love and hope. Another excellent story by the author.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

The Christmas Castle in Scotland

385 pages One More Chapter publisher Publication date October 31, 2022

ABOUT THE BOOK

Unwrap this gorgeous gift of a book for an escape to the snow-peaked caps of the Scottish Highlands and a romance that will melt your heart…

Izzy McBride had never in a million years expected to inherit an actual castle from her great uncle Bill but here she was, in the run up to Christmas, Monarch of her own Glen – a very rundown glen in need of a lot of TLC if her dream of turning it into a boutique bed and breakfast was to come true.

But when Izzy’s eccentric mother rents a room to enigmatic thriller author Ross Adair and the Scottish snow starts to settle like the frosting on a Christmas cake, it’s a race to get the castle ready before they’re all snowed in for the holidays.

MY THOUGHTS

October seems to be the month for a lot of Christmas books releasing and though I didn’t get a chance to read this when it released, I am so glad I got a chance to read it now. I also have the next book in the series and look forward to it as well.

You’re going to love your holiday trip to the Scottish Highlands through this book. A fun romantic holiday read it hits all the feels you need.
An inheritance of a castle in Scotland is nothing to sneeze at and Izzy McBride would never have thought it would happen to her.
Running it with her over the top mother can be a bit overwhelming, she does have others helping het to run it though she gets that help in a way she wasn’t expecting.

Though the flakes are flying outside things are heating up in the castle with thriller author Ross Adair as one of her guests.
Loved reading the descriptions of the castle and gardens. The Scottish foods and descriptions of ingredients made me hungry.
Lobed the two mothers and their plotting and planning, how much fun.
Shall I pack my bags now? I’m ready for a visit to the castle.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

Two book reviews of Christie Barlow’s books: A Winter Wedding at Starcross Manor and The Library on Love Heart Lane

385 pages One More Chapter publisher September 28, 2023 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

ove Heart Lane – where friends are there for you no matter what

Fashion designer Libby Carter has always loved weddings, so when her brother finds himself in a bind and asks her to step in and plan the perfect winter wonderland wedding for guests at his hotel, Starcross Manor, she happily takes on the challenge. But this is no ordinary Christmas wedding and when everything starts to go awry Libby asks gorgeous videographer Guy Hart for help.

This isn’t single dad Guy’s usual gig – and he is not a fan of weddings – but saying no to vivacious Libby isn’t an option … especially when saying yes leads to one very unforgettable kiss under the mistletoe!

MY THOUGHTS

Starcross Manor is in the Scottish Highlands and owned by Flynn. It’s huge and elegant and Flynn is looking to put it on the map as the venue to have the ultimate winter wedding. He has a wedding planner and photographer all set and he’s set up a contest to give one extraordinarily lucky couple their dream Christmas Eve wedding free and use the video to advertise the Starcross Manor to pump its ratings right to the top. Exit the wedding planner as she’s nowhere to be found and won’t answer texts. The show must go on though as Flynn’s sister, Libby a famous fashion designer agrees to step in and help the couple have their dream wedding just the way they want it. After meeting with the couple multiple times something doesn’t seem right, and they have some pretty odd requests for their wedding. When Libby decides to help, she’s staying at a cottage on the grounds and Guy the photographer is staying at a cabin nearby. Neither is in a relationship; Libby’s ended some time ago and Guy is no longer with the mother of his child an adorable tot. Sparks fly but with all the wedding planning and other dramas happening will there be time for a romance. I enjoyed Guy’s character he seemed like such a nice person. The book has down to earth characters with regular day to day problems. I enjoyed the setting and descriptions a lot. This book has a warm friendly feel and I’ll be reading mor in the series.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

360 pages One More Chapter publisher December 31, 2023 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

Don’t miss this very special standalone novel in the Love Heart Lane series. Previously published as Evie’s Year of Taking Chances but now rewritten and improved by the author!

Love, life, and libraries

Growing up in foster care, Elle Cooper always felt a piece of herself was missing. Now, as her thirtieth birthday approaches, she’s ready to find it. But when instigating the search for her birth mother leads to a whole host of unexpected events, this librarian’s quiet life suddenly gets very loud!

With new friends, old flames and surprising influences keeping Elle busy, she soon starts to see that there’s more to life than where you came from – and that where you are right now, and who you have in your corner, is what might just matter most of all…

Love Heart Lane – where friends are there for you no matter what

MY THOUGHTS

This is another charming addition to the Love Heart Lane series. Elle Cooper is shy and reserved and has been satisfied being a librarian. But something has changed for her, a monumental birthday is approaching, her thirtieth birthday is almost here, and she feels she owes it to herself to find her biological mother and get answers. Growing up in foster care and going from home to home has left her with low self-esteem, why didn’t they want her? Her last foster parent whom she considers her mom has been the best and she is still close to this woman, but she still wants answers. She’s down to earth and doesn’t really dress to impress. When an author has a book signing at her library, she’s sure that’s the last she’ll see of him. Full of fun friendships, a friend of hers moves in so they both save on expenses. A book that has a library and book club meetings? I’ll take it. I loved meeting up with the characters from previous books in this charming series again. Small town friendship with strong female friendships and the characters having each other’s back and doing what they can for each other. Now this is my kind of book.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

Blog Tour for The Island Cottage by Jane Lovering

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Island Cottage

When Brid Harcus is sent to the Orkney Islands, in the far reaches of Scotland, she has high hopes for her trip being short, straightforward and lucrative.

Her mother has inherited a cottage from her Great Aunt Jennet which has been unlived in and unloved for decades, and the time has come to make it habitable and saleable. Easy, right?

But Midness Cottage has other ideas. For one thing it’s rather more ‘fixer upper’ than Country Living, with a resident goose and her goslings who have made themselves at home. And Brid definitely hadn’t planned for the strongly-held local belief that the cottage is meant to be the home of the Orkney Witch, and whomever lives in it must fulfil this role. Not the best message for the estate agent brochure and of course Brid doesn’t believe in magic, let alone have healing powers.

But Orkney does have healing powers. Its beauty and peace are enchanting, its people welcoming, and Brid’s handsome new friend Magnus is rather charming too. When her life back in York starts calling her home, will Brid sell up and ship out? Or did the last Orkney Witch cast a spell and leave a legacy of love if only Brid believed in magic…

Purchase Link – https://mybook.to/TheIslandCottagesocial

MY THOUGHTS

One thing I love about the author’s books is their association with cottages. As someone who lives in the US, I associate cottages as being a UK thing. Yes, we have them here but not the same way as I see them over there. In my mind the cottages there are magical, cozy, maybe a bit small but perfect for a couple and maybe throw in a few fairy lights.
I just love books with cottages.

A fifty-year vacant cottage sits on Orkney Islands, in the far reaches of Scotland. Inherited by Brid Harcus’s mother she doesn’t want it, so Brid knows she’ll pop in make quick work of the repairs and make a nice turn around profit quickly. When she arrives, it’s vacant alright except for the goose and her goslings that she’s super protective of. Woe is anyone who dares to go near them.

Brid hasn’t counted on having such a handsome neighbor as Magnus. Lifelong resident Mangus knows the cottage called Midness Cottage is known to outsiders as the “Witches’ Cottage, as Brid’s great Aunt Jennet was known as while living there.

Can Brid fix the cottage quickly with Magnus’s help and not scare off the tourists who’ve heard rumors? Will Brid be able to open up to Mangus even though she’s planning on leaving soon as the fix up is done? I loved Magnus’s character; he reminded me of a big bumbling guy that finally gets seen for his compassionate and genuine side. Fun, heartwarming, a true joy to read. I loved it.

Happy Release Day-Tendu: Dancing in the Castle (A Dancer’s Journey Book 1) by Ailish Sinclair

367 pages October 20,2023 publication date Graupius Books publisher

ABOUT THE BOOK

Scotland’s all misty lochs and magical forests and perfect boyfriends, right?

When dance student Amalphia Treadwell embarks on a secret relationship with her charismatic new teacher, she has no idea of the danger that lurks in his school in Scotland.

She’s soon dealing with her boyfriend’s obsessive ex, the strange research taking place at the castle school and her own ever-evolving relationship issues.

Amalphia works hard to be the best dancer she can be, but as tension builds within the old walls of the castle, she begins to wonder if she will ever escape the dank dark of the dungeon…

Dark, witty, sexy and fun, Tendu is a compelling and seductive story of love, dance and obsession. Get your copy today.

Ailish’s dance background and love of history and spicy stories are what inspired this heady mix of romance and ballet set in a castle. She lives in Scotland beside a loch with her husband and two children where she dances and writes and eats rather too much chocolate.

Tendu contains graphic sex scenes, violence, trauma and adult language.

MY THOUGHTS

I believe the author writes about what she knows and loves. This is my first time reading a book by this author and I enjoyed what I read. There is a content warning and I appreciated knowing what was upcoming.

If you enjoy mentions of chocolate and lots of cake, this book is for you.

There are evolving relationships and strong character development. The description of Scotland sounds magical and mysterious, like a place I would seriously enjoy being.
A young dancer, an older male teacher, an evolving relationship.

There is some darkness, a castle with its hidden secrets, a maniacal character who has everyone fooled at first, but we begin to feel the danger. Very atmospheric, I could feel what the characters were feeling, feel their pain, it broke my heart and then healed it and made it sing.

Excellent, I’ll be on the lookout for more by the author.

I was given a complimentary copy of the book.

The Rose and the Thistle, Scottish Jacobite rising, book by Laura Frantz

414 pages Revell publisher Jan 03,2023 publish date

It would be best for everyone if he could send this misfit heiress on her way as soon as possible.

Drawn into a whirlwind of intrigue, shifting alliances, and ambitions, Lady Blythe must be careful whom she trusts. Her fortune, her future, and her very life are at stake. Those who appear to be adversaries may turn out to be allies–and those who pretend friendship may be enemies.

My Thoughts

I’ll have to admit I have read every book by this author, except one. And I need to remedy that.
I call this author the Queen of historical fiction and it shows in how well researched her books are.
As soon as I see she has a book coming out I have to read it.
The beautiful description of Scotland makes me want to visit it from its moors to its historical depth. The plot is set during the 1700’s and the Jacobite rebellion. It was wonderful being transported back in time to the eighteenth century and discovering Lady Blythe and Everard’s characters and seeing their interactions. I did not expect some of the turn of events that happened in the story. Starting off slow the book does pick up. This is a slow burn clean romance with intrigue, great historical descriptions, wonderful characters and a fascinating plot.
I also found it interesting that the author is related to a character in the book and as she delves into her family history, she brings us with her and shares this history with us.
Do not miss this wonderful historical romance.
