The Heart’s Bidding (Amish Calling Book 1)

382 pages Zondervan publisher August 1, 2023 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

Together, schoolteacher Rachelle Lapp and auctioneer Toby Miller must face their hardest battle yet: trusting God’s plan for their uncertain future.

At twenty-nine, auctioneer Toby Miller is a notorious bachelor. But his job keeps him on the road for months out of the year, and he knows no Plain woman could want a marriage that would force her to live and raise children alone. Thankfully, Toby’s content to dedicate his life to the family business, especially now that his grandfather is retiring. So why does his heart keep longing for something—or more specifically, someone—he can’t have?

Rachelle Lapp has already turned down two marriage proposals. Neither promised a future that would bring her more joy than her job as a teacher to Amish children with developmental disabilities, including her brother, Jonah, and Toby’s sister, Sadie. But when the parents’ committee votes to send her students to the English schools, where they will have access to many more resources, Rachelle finds herself out of a job. She’s forced to decide between pursuing her calling far from home and staying near to the man she can’t get off her mind.

As their families matchmake, Toby and Rachelle realize their jobs may not be all that’s holding them back from a future together. They both must learn not only to trust each other but also trust God’s plans for them. But do those plans involve a lifetime together or them going their separate ways?

MY THOUGHTS

he Heart’s Bidding is the start of a beautiful and emotional Amish book series by Kelly Irvin.
This is a very special book, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Auctioneer Toby Miller thinks he has his priorities straight. This bachelor spends months at a time on the road doing his auctioneering thing but that’s okay. as a single man he has no one to answer to. When his grandfather who has run the office side of the business steps down and his father isn’t suited for this type of work things start to change.

Rethinking all the traveling as a lovely young woman catches his interest and the other side of business needs running may have put him in a new frame of mind. Letting go and letting God be in charge is not an easy thing for Toby to just do though when he’s used to having all this freedom.

Rachelle Lapp is a schoolteacher for the Amish children with developmental disabilities. When it’s decided, the children will go to an Englisher school with more resources available to them her job becomes redundant.

She knows the needs of the children having a special needs brother and Toby has a special needs sister.
The Amish believe these children are special and a blessing from God and I agree.

The two are drawn together with many similarities and understandings. I loved seeing the support of family and friends in the tough situations.
God’s plan will lead this couple on the right path in love and in life.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Best-selling novelist Kelly Irvin’s latest Amish romance, Every Good Gift, debuted in February 2023. The third novel in the Amish Blessings series takes place in Yoder and Haven, Kansas. The series takes a look at adoption in Amish communities. The first book, Love’s Dwelling, won second place in the Selah Awards contest in the long contemporary romance category. The series follows the Amish of Sky Country series, which featured Amish communities in Northwest Montana affected by wildfires that destroyed thousands of acres in the state in recent years. The first book, Mountains of Grace, debuted in August 2019, and delves into the impact on not only an Amish man and woman, but also a smoke jumper, a sheriff’s deputy, and a young English woman forced to confront her past because of the fires.

Kelly also writes romantic suspense novels. Her most recent forays into this genre include Trust Me, Her Every Move and Closer Than She Knows, all set in San Antonio and South Texas. Publishers Weekly says of Closer Than She Knows, “this brisk, smoothly written thriller from Irvin pits court reporter Teagan O’Rourke, a murder mystery lover, against a cunning and vicious serial killer. Fans of serial killer fiction with a Christian slant will be satisfied.”

Of Tell Her No Lies, The Library Journal says, “Irvin creates a complex web with enough twists and turns to keep even the most savvy romantic suspense readers guessing until the end. Known for her Amish novels, this two-time Carol Award finalist shows that her talents span subgenres from tranquil Amish stories to rapidly paced breathless suspense.”

Kelly is also the author of the Every Amish Season series, which included four books that chronicle the lives of Amish widows who are in different seasons in their lives. These women are linked by life altering experiences that bring them together as wives, mothers, and grandmothers in the small town of Jamesport, Mo. The first book, Upon a Spring Breeze, received critical acclaim from the Library Journal: “A moving and compelling tale about the power of grace and forgiveness that reminds us how we become strongest in our most broken moments.”

Kelly Irvin is also the author of The Amish of Bee County series, which includes the critically acclaimed The Beekeeper’s Son. Publishers Weekly called the first book in the series a beautifully woven masterpiece and Romantic Times Magazine called Kelly a storyteller extraordinaire. It was followed by The Bishop’s Son and The Saddle Maker’s Son, which is an ECPA bestseller.

A two-time ACFW Carol finalist, Kelly’s novellas have been included in numerous anthologies, including An Amish Summer, The Amish Christmas Gift, An Amish Market, an Amish Christmas Love, and Amish Quilt, An Amish Reunion, An Amish Picnic, and An Amish Christmas Bakery.

She also penned the Bliss Creek Amish series and the New Hope Amish series, both published by Harvest House Publishers. Love Still Stands, the first book in the New Hope series, debuted in September 2012, and the follow-up, Love Redeemed, released March 1, 2014. The final book in the series, set in Branson, MO., was A Plain Love Song, released in July 2014.

The Bliss Creek Amish series, set in Kansas, includes To Love and to Cherish, A Heart Made New, and Love’s Journey Home.

In the New Hope series, familiar characters from Bliss Creek move to Missouri to start a new district and a new life.

304 pages Lake Union Publishing May 3, 2022 publication date

An unexpected connection becomes the saving grace for two unlikely friends in a heart-stirring novel about love, loss, and moving forward by a New York Times and #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author.

Never knowing his parents, eleven-year-old Stewie Little and his brother have been raised on a farm by their older sister. Stewie steadfastly tends the chickens left by his beloved late grandmother. And every day Stewie goes door to door selling fresh eggs from his wagon―a routine with a surprise just around the corner. It’s his new customer, Marilyn. She’s prickly and guarded, yet comfortably familiar―she reminds the grieving Stewie so much of the grandmother he misses more than he can express.

Marilyn has a reason for keeping her distance: a secret no one knows about. Her survival tactic is to draw a line between herself and other people―one that Stewie is determined to cross. As their visits become more frequent, a complicated but deeply rooted relationship grows. That’s when Stewie discovers how much more there is to Marilyn, to her past, and to challenges that become more pressing each day. But whatever difficult times lie ahead, Stewie learns that although he can’t fix everything for Marilyn or himself, at least he’s no longer alone.

MY THOUGHTS

This is a book I put off reading because I knew it would break my heart when I read it and it did, but it was also healed the more I read. Dealing with love, loss and moving on.

Dreaming of Flight is about an eleven-year-old boy as our main character. He’s dealt with an unbelievable amount of loss in his short life: his parents shortly after his birth so he doesn’t remember them and his grandmothers. He and his disabled brother are being raised by his adult sister. Though she does the best she can she works a lot, and he is lonely.

To keep his Gran’s memory alive, he is continuing to raise her chickens and sell the eggs they lay.
His family desperately needs the egg money, and he gets to meet some neat people on his egg route.

One of his new customers is an elderly woman named, Marilyn. She reminds him so much of his grandmother and she seems to enjoy his company just as much. An unexpected friendship starts up with benefits to both. He visits her even when he’s not selling eggs and when she gets in trouble with the law for a secret, she’s been keeping he’s there every step of the way.

This touches of loss of independence for older adults. Many think children don’t realize certain things because of their age but I believe children are much more perceptive than we give them credit for.

This is a heartwarming full of depth story about a young boy, his adoptive grandmother and an awareness many of us as adults miss.

Highly recommended!

Bookouture Blog Tour for The Mother Next Door by Leah Mercer

Book Description:

I glance over at Lou’s house as I pull onto my drive, surprised that it is still in darkness. Lou and the kids should have been home from school long ago. I should be preparing a delicious meal for my children as they tell me about their day. But Lou’s car is nowhere to be seen…

The night is drawing in and Lou has still not returned. I try not to panic, but deep down I know something is wrong. Lou is the most dependable friend. Our children are at the same school. We always help each other out, and she cares for my two like only a mother can.

As a storm rages outside and local news reports tell everyone to stay indoors, a feeling of deep dread starts to swell. Then the call comes. The police have found Lou’s car, with my children’s schoolbags still inside along with Lou’s phone. But they are nowhere to be seen.

Clutching my husband’s hands, willing our children to be found safe and sound, I try to silence the voice inside my head. I’ve not been honestI’m being punished for what happened all those years ago.

And then I get Lou’s message and I know that if I want to see my children again, I need to tell the truth to everyone I love.

What I don’t yet know is that Lou has been keeping her own dark secret. And once the storm passes, nothing will ever be the same again.

A gripping and addictive psychological suspense about dark obsession, intense motherly love and how far we will go to protect those we love the most. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, Adele Parks and Sally Hepworth.

My Thoughts

Excuse me for one moment while I pick my jaw up off of the floor!

Secrets, sure we all have them, like eating that last slice of pizza that no one was supposed to eat because it was being saved. But what if your secret was bigger, oh so much bigger and you were about to find out exactly how it would affect your life?

Lou is the perfect neighbor, self-confident, bright, full of energy and always wanting to spend time with the neighborhood kids and pick them up from school when she picks up her own kids. She’s the kind of woman we all want to be and envy. She’s perfect!

There’s a crazy strong storm brewing and Lou is going to pick up the kids after school again, thank goodness because they’ll be safe with her. It’s getting later and later, and the kids are not home yet, and no one can get ahold of Lou.

Three neighborhood women have been friends since childhood. They hide a secret no one can know. Lou’s car has been found, it’s now dark and one child has asthma, the rain is pouring, and the creek continues to rise. Are they safe, dry, in danger?

You can feel the tension mounting, where is Lou? And what is this text message they receive telling the women to “tell all and the children will be safe.” Can they believe it and what power does Lou have over these women?
All we care about is, are the children found safely?

Some absolutely astonishing revelations come to light in the twists and turn revealed in this suspenseful, psychological thriller!
So good, I recommend it to you if you like tension filled reads with an unforeseen ending.

A Match in the Making (The Matchmakers Book #1) Historical fiction full of humor by Jen Turano

362 pages Feb 21,2023 publish date Bethany House publishers

About The Book

Miss Gwendolyn Brinley accepted a temporary paid companion position for the Newport summer season, believing it would be a lark to spend the summer in America’s most exclusive town. She suddenly finds her summer turning anything but amusing when her employer expects her to take over responsibilities as an assistant matchmaker. Tasked with the daunting prospect of attaining advantageous matches for her clients, Gwendolyn soon finds herself in the employ of Mr. Walter Townsend, the catch of the Season, but a gentleman Gwendolyn finds beyond irritating.

Walter Townsend is reluctantly in search of a wife for the sake of his unruly motherless children who cannot keep a governess for long. What he wasn’t expecting was Miss Brinley, an amateur matchmaker who turns his quest for a new wife into a complete and utter debacle. Constantly besieged by society ladies on a mission to win his affection, Walter must find a way to overcome their inundating attention–and his unexpected attraction toward Gwendolyn.

The more time they spend together throughout the Newport Season, the harder it is for Gwendolyn to find Walter a wife when she realizes his perfect match might be . . . her.

My Thoughts

If you read a Jen Turano book, you’ll be guaranteed of laughter. Her books are full of humor and always make me smile and put me in a good mood as I’m reading them. I really enjoy books set in places I’ve been to. This past Summer we vacationed in Newport and visited many of the opulent mansions of yesterday there. From doing this I could picture the descriptions the author offers in her writing, and it makes the book absolutely come alive.

I laughed out loud so many times imagining the hilarious scenarios being played out.

Gwendolyn is one of my favorite female characters Jen has written about. The children, now they just make the book so charming and amusing. The dialogue is humorous and witty.

I enjoyed reading how the assistant reluctant matchmaker does such a wonderful job with matchmaking but yet she becomes part of a perfectly matched pair herself.

If you’re looking for a historical romance full of humor and wit, may I recommend this one to you? I look forward to seeing what the author puts out next. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through Interviews & Reviews for my honest opinion.

Enjoy your day and give a smile to someone who needs it today.

Bookouture Blog Tour for The Polish Girl by Gosia Nealon

About The Book

The Polish Girl: An utterly heartbreaking and gripping World War 2 historical novel (The Secret Resistance Series) by Gosia Nealon

Poland, 1944. “Please, officer, I beg you—”, I cry. But my father has already fallen. “Don’t leave me, Tata,” I whisper, rushing to desperately cradle him close. As the kind, loving man who raised me takes his last breath, I weep into my hands and promise to fight to end this terrible war, no matter the cost…

Although it won’t bring her beloved father back, twenty-three-year-old Wanda vows to honour his memory and all he stood for. Throwing herself into the Polish resistance, she risks her life on the dangerous mission of transporting ammunition for the underground network’s uprising against the Nazis.

Slipping through the night-time shadows of an empty park to meet an informant—one who could provide crucial supplies in the battle for what’s right—the sight of the man waiting turns Wanda’s blood to ice. Even in the dim light, she instantly recognises him as the soldier who killed her father.

The soldier claims he is a double agent, working for the resistance. Questioning everything, Wanda’s heart races as she is forced to make a split-second decision. Believe the man who she thought was the enemy? Or endanger the lives of her network—and their secret plans to fight the Germans?

Can Wanda trust the man she hates most in the world? Did her father die in vain? Or if she fights her every instinct, will she truly change the tide of the war?

Fans of The Alice NetworkThe Nightingale and The Tattooist of Auschwitz will adore this utterly heartbreaking page-turner. You will not forget this unputdownable story of love, loss, and the courage it takes to hold on to hope in darkest times.

Previously published as The Last Sketch.

My Thoughts

This book is excellent. I could not put it down once I started it and read it past my bedtime, finishing it in one day.
Twin brothers, identical twins, raised together by the same parents. Vastly different, one is gentle and compassionate taking after the mother. The other, like the father is a brutal killer, a German soldier.
Wanda Odwaga feels safe in her home with her mother and her father, a retired surgeon. One evening her, Tata, (father) is killed before her eyes there. Looking into the eyes of this killer she vows she will get her revenge. As she then starts to see this murderer everywhere she goes, she is sickened and confused. He whispers to her, “I am not who you think I am.”
An orphaned little boy is adopted into her family, and he is a wonderful addition to the story, he is so smart too.
Poland, 1944, it was such a turbulent time, rationing was in full force, there was a curfew, the Germans had invaded. No one was safe on the streets, especially a woman alone. Some risked their lives to be in the Polish resistance using code words to pass messages.
We see the characters going through such turmoil in this unputdownable book but yet they persevere and show such strength in the darkest of days because they know strength and courage brings the light. Heartwarming will not be soon forgotten.

About The Author

While Gosia Nealon is a proud New Yorker, she was born and raised in Poland. Her journey to the Big Apple revealed a wealth of cultural differences, but also the values that connect us all. Like the fierce desire to protect family, find love, and ultimately, discover who we are and why we’re here.

Gosia’s award-winning short stories have always delved into life’s biggest questions, but it was the drama, sacrifice, and tragedy of WWII that led her to pen her debut novel, which won a gold medal in the 2022 Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY).

Growing up in Poland, Gosia heard many firsthand accounts of the war, told from a perspective rarely captured in mainstream literature. She was compelled to breathe life into two young people falling in love in the midst of the most terrifying conflict of our time.

When Gosia isn’t tapping away at her laptop, she’s often walking the streets of New York. With her husband and two young sons in tow, they search for the most succulent pierogi, transporting them back to the cobbled streets of her childhood.

Publication Day review, The Woman with the Cure,She helped to cure polio.By Lynn Cullen

432 pages Berkley Publisher February 21,2023 publish date.

About The Book

She gave up everything — and changed the world.

A riveting novel based on the true story of the woman who stopped a pandemic, from the bestselling author of Mrs. Poe.

In 1940s and ’50s America, polio is as dreaded as the atomic bomb. No one’s life is untouched by this disease that kills or paralyzes its victims, particularly children. Outbreaks of the virus across the country regularly put American cities in lockdown. Some of the world’s best minds are engaged in the race to find a vaccine. The man who succeeds will be a god.

But Dorothy Horstmann is not focused on beating her colleagues to the vaccine. She just wants the world to have a cure. Applying the same determination that lifted her from a humble background as the daughter of immigrants, to becoming a doctor –often the only woman in the room–she hunts down the monster where it lurks: in the blood.

This discovery of hers, and an error by a competitor, catapults her closest colleague to a lead in the race. When his chance to win comes on a worldwide scale, she is asked to sink or validate his vaccine—and to decide what is forgivable, and how much should be sacrificed, in pursuit of the cure.

My Thoughts

Reading historical fiction based on fact has always fascinated me. I love what I can learn from reading it. Historical fiction has definitely improved in that aspect. The writing gets more realistic and filled with facts all the time.
In the 40’s and 50’s polio was a dreaded disease so many people got it, many becoming paralyzed and some spending their time in an iron lung. In the 50’s and sixties there were several scientists and researchers, several listed in the book who were in a race against the clock to formulate the vaccination for polio before another outbreak that killed many. The book focuses on several of these developers of the vaccination including a woman by the name of Dorothy Horstman. She tirelessly worked, not getting the acclaim she deserved for her discoveries. Dorothy had a theory, that if listened to by the male scientists could have saved many lives but it went against the theory the scientific community thought at the time was correct. It took over ten years and much more painstaking research for her hypothesis to be proven correct and she had to share the credit with a man, David Bodian who came up with this information years after she did.
Back in those days women were not expected to be researchers or scientists.
I am so thankful for the advances in the medical field even though we have a long way to go still especially in advances in the brain and the treatments of Alzheimer’s.
I enjoy reading books that show the strength of women and how they are empowered. My hats off to the developments women have contributed to the medical field.

My Thoughts

The Primrose Woods series by Jill Steeples is such a lovely series.
The feel-good book is just what you’ll need at the end of your day.
I read this while drinking my Tazo orange tea and what a wonderful relaxation it was.
Not finding Australia living up to what they were expecting Lizzie’s daughter and two children just pop up on her doorstep to stay, it’s a surprising but thrilling moment.
I enjoyed the relationships the women had with each other. They are close friends, sharing romance troubles and triumphs.
Rhianna West has had a best friend for a long time, Luke. She sees him now as a romantic interest. If only he wasn’t moving so far away, and she sure doesn’t do long distance relationships.
Abbey Carter has a fun and friendly dog. She and her boyfriend Sam love living on the outskirts of scenic Primrose Woods in the picturesque village of Wishwell. There are so many activities for them to do as a family.
I enjoyed following each woman’s journey as they navigate day to day life and on again- off again relationships but yet are always the backbone in friendship for each other.
I enjoyed the snowy setting and seeing the excitement of the anticipation of Christmas through the eyes of the children. There was such an exciting and wonderful surprise on Christmas Eve.
An uplifting and positive book. I would recommend it.

My Thoughts

This is the first book in the Love in the Lakes series.
Halesmere sounds like such a beautiful place to visit, with its scenic gardens, lovely walking trails and the best climbing areas.
I know I’d love to walk there and relax in its floral gardens.
The author’s books are so heartwarming, they really draw you in.
Main character Ella Grant arrives to Halesmere House in Cumbria to take charge of re-opening the house.
Ella and Max are both suffering from losses which adds some emotional parts to the story.
Max’s children fall hard and fast for Ella. The children are both very young and impressionable and the author gets it right in her portrayal of the children. They are fun to be around and really enjoy their time with Ella; I think they miss a mother figure.
Having lost his wife Max is hesitant to allow his children to get too attached to Ella as she’s only going to be there for her job for a limited amount of time and then where would that leave the children after she leaves?
Max is borderline rude to Ella when we first meet them, but I think he’s scared to let himself relax and love again. It’s such a gradual change we see in Max’s behavior its almost not even noticeable, slow and steady we see a warming. He trusts Ella with his children and Max and Ella’s relationship takes a warming turn.
Warm welcoming story with the characters moving on from grief and once again finding happiness.

The Christmas Spirit-Heartwarming story from the queen of Christmas fiction, Debbie Macomber-Review

240 pages Ballantine Books October 18, 2022 publication date

About the Book

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Two lifelong friends decide to trade places the week before Christmas and end up finding love along the way in this delightful novel from the queen of holiday stories, #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber.

Peter Armstrong and Hank Colfax are best friends, but their lives couldn’t be more different. Peter, the local pastor who is dedicated to his community, spending time visiting the flock, attending meetings, and, with the holiday season approaching, preparing for the Christmas service and live nativity. As a bartender, Hank serves a much different customer base at his family-owned tavern, including a handful of lonely regulars and the local biker gang.

When Peter scoffs that Hank has it easy compared to him, the two decide to switch jobs until Christmas Eve. To their surprise, the responsibilities of a bartender and a pastor are similar, but taking on the other’s work is more difficult than either Peter or Hank expected. As the two begin to see each other in a new light—and each discovers a new love to cherish—their lives are forever changed.

In The Christmas Spirit, Debbie Macomber celebrates the true meaning of the holidays and the inclusive community spirit that binds us all.

My Thoughts

A woman while watching her grandchildren one evening, they ask her about baking cookies and after volunteering all that day she is wiped out. They agree to have her tell them a story instead and while drinking hot cocoa and cuddling on the couch she starts, it’s a true story about two men, friends since childhood. One is a pastor, one a bartender, two quite different professions. Each thinks the other’s job is easy peasy, nothing to it and they agree to trade jobs for a bit and prove how easy each other’s job is. With funny and disastrous results, it’s quite the eye-opening experience for them both as they meet new people and come to have a new appreciation for each other. A heartwarming and emotional story. I really enjoy this author’s books and always read her new ones when they release.

His Secret Daughter by Melissa Wiesner- Bookouture Blog Tour

About The Book

Not Noah. Not my husband. But there he is, unconscious in the hospital bed. Our daughter sobs into my shoulder. We love him so much. What if he never wakes up? And who is the little girl beside him, gazing up at us with big, tear-filled brown eyes? Eyes that look just like my husband’s…

Our family of three is perfect. Just me, Noah and our teenage daughter Maya. The day the police knock at our door, telling us about the car accident, is the worst day of my life. My heart shatters, but what they say next almost makes it stop beating: Noah was in the car with another woman who died at the scene. Her two-year-old girl, Luna, miraculously survived.

With Noah fighting for his life, I’m desperate for the truth: and when I search his desk, I find checks made out to Luna’s mother. Did my loving, loyal husband have a secret family all along?

Despite my own terrible pain, at the hospital I can’t help but comfort this poor child as she cries for her mommy. With nowhere else for Luna to go, I find myself opening our home. Seeing Maya hold Luna’s hand and giggle as they chase butterflies in the garden, it’s almost like my daughter has a sister…

I have an impossible choice. Do I tell Maya the truth about her father? If Noah wakes up, will even more secrets come out about who he really is? And can I forgive him enough to give this sweet, innocent girl a home… or will my husband’s betrayal tear us all apart?

Fans of Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper, Kate Hewitt and Diane Chamberlain will adore this absolutely unputdownable read about how the people we love most can hide the darkest secrets.

My Thoughts

Intense, this is the one you’ll be recommending to all of your friends.
Such an unexpected ending. This is perfection and I loved it!
