Nonfiction review: A Patriot’s Promise: Protecting My Brothers, Fighting for My Life, and Keeping My Word

288 pages St. Martin’s Press publisher July 4,2023 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

An inspiring memoir of promises kept, overcoming obstacles, and what it means to sacrifice for others, written by a Special Warfare Operator with the US Air Force.

When Israel “DT” Del Toro, Jr.’s Humvee rolled over a roadside improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, he had one thought as he lost consciousness: I have to keep the promise I made to my dad. DT was orphaned at the age of fourteen, and on the night before his father died, he repeated the promise his dad had required of him: “Take care of your brothers and sisters.”

Throughout his childhood and into adulthood, DT indeed looked after his younger brother and sisters, even to his own detriment and sacrifice. When he enlisted in the Air Force, progressing in ranks as a skilled marksman calling airstrikes, his promise extended to his brothers and sisters in the Air Force―his fellow soldiers and brothers-in-arms.

When DT was injured in action, he lay in a coma for three months with third-degree burns on 80 percent of his body. He nearly died three times, and doctors predicted―if he survived―he would forever breathe with a respirator and never walk again. DT pushed through every limit to his full recovery, and he became the first 100 percent disabled veteran to reenlist in the Air Force.

DT’s promise to his dad extends now to his fellow wounded warriors throughout the world as he advocates for awareness and affecting change in public policy for wounded, injured, and ill soldiers. He is a patriot who has kept his promise and changed the world with the spirit of his heart, soul, body, and mind.

MY THOUGHTS

I don’t read as much nonfiction as I used to. After reading this I know I need to make a point to do so. Though I’ve never heard of the wounded vet this book is about I’m very impressed with his life story.

Coming from very humble beginnings, his father died when he was very young, but he made a promise to his father that he would always take care of his siblings and he did, putting his life on hold until they were old enough to not need his constant care. His mother also left him and his sibling’s way too early. Sent to live with his grandparents the siblings didn’t have an easy life, but he made sure they had all they needed.

Joining the Air Force, he had third degree burns over 80% of his body, with a 15 % chance of survival it goes to show the type of resilience he has. He became the first 100 percent disabled veteran to reenlist in the Air Force.

Though many of the changes have come too late for him he advocates for policy changes and awareness for wounded and ill soldiers. Many have said to him his public speaking has given them the encouragement they needed to face what they are going through.

He did this all for his wife and son they are his inspiration.
This is not the type of book I normally read but it’s so uplifting and inspirational that I’ll be reading more books of a similar type. Highly recommended! Thank you, sir. You are such an inspiration!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

Review of two seasonal children’s books: A Bold Pumpkin Plan and The Not-So-Wicked Witch

32 pages ages 4-8 Capstone Editions publisher August 1, 2024 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

A plan to build a unique home takes a timid Hedgehog on an incredible journey of self-discovery. From meeting new friends to conquering countless obstacles, Hedgehog tackles his house plan with a newfound confidence. Best-selling creator Katy Hudson (Too Many Carrots and Mindful Mr. Sloth) combines her stunning, detailed artwork with themes of friendship, problem solving, and self-awareness in this empowering picture book.

MY THOUGHTS

Every year little Hedgehog has a dull plan. It’s as dull as the plain brown leaves he makes his house from. This year timid Hedgehog wants some excitement with a bold pumpkin plan. He makes an elaborate plan to have a beautiful new home this year. While gathering his supplies he meets new friends, overcoming his shyness, solves problems and has self-awareness while gaining self-found confidence. Lovingly illustrated and giving children a lesson that they can do it themselves and gain confidence.

32 pages 4-7 years Frances Lincoln Children’s Books August 6, 2024 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

On the sleepiest of nights, when the air is still and the moon is full, the conditions are just right… for WITCHES TO TAKE FLIGHT!

And among all these terribly wicked, cackling witches, is one… who is actually, surprisingly quite nice!

This little witch doesn’t enjoy being wicked like the others. Not one little bit. She doesn’t like creating mischief, she doesn’t like making a mess and she definitely doesn’t like any naughtiness!

The other witches decide that the littlest witch needs rescuing from all this icky, gooey goodness! It’s time for some lessons in wickedness, and the best way to do that is by making a completely terrible and utterly awful potion…!

Will our little witch leave her kind and gentle ways behind her and join in the wickedness? Or will she persuade her fellow witches that actually, being wicked isn’t all it’s cracked up to be?

This playful take on spooky witches from the award-winning Bethan Stevens takes readers to a magical world of wickedness and kindness. This is the wonderfully funny follow-up to the prize-winning Grumpy Fairies and the fairytale twist A Damsel Not in Distress.

MY THOUGHTS

All witches are mean and not so polite, right? Now hold on just a minute, Halloween night finds a nice little witch who despite the others trying to change her to be like them just wants to be herself. A story about uniqueness and a wonderful lesson in not following the crowd and that it’s okay to be yourself. Super cutely illustrated for the younger crowd.

Enjoy your weekend and thank you for stopping in.

435 pages Barbour Fiction publisher September 1, 2023 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

In A Louisiana Snow by Morgan Tarpley Smith, meet Mattie: A passionate visionary who learns to forgive and finds love in unexpected places…

In Restoring Christmas by Betsy St. Amant, meet Jolene: An artist and prodigal daughter who discovers love exists in the very place she once called home…

In A Christmas Reunion by Lenora Worth, meet Adale: A beautiful widow who finally dares to love again…

And don’t forget Granny, whose feisty spirit, blunt dialogue, and quirky ways play an important and endearing role.

MY THOUGHTS

I enjoy reading novellas and this is a lovely Christmas one. Each story builds off of the previous one and when one ends the next seamlessly starts as we find a generational thing going with strong and faithful women from the same Louisiana town.

We don’t usually connect snow and Louisiana but this season with a little holiday magic and a generous helping from the unexpected snowstorm forgiveness, romance and coming together again of a special family may just be happening.

A delightful feel-good holiday story I was delighted to read.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

MY THOUGHTS

WOW! How is it even possible the author has four books out already in the Little Board Game Cafe series? I’ve read and loved every single one of them.

This one is Kate’s story, and I think it’s my favorite, but I probably said that about all of them because I loved them all. I think it’s the most emotional of the series but not in a bad way. There are so many things going on and I don’t think this is a spoiler, but the book has a lovely happy ending.

I still wish there was a board game cafe near me in the states, it’s sounds like such a fun way to spend some hours. I love the characters that we got to visit from previous books and meeting new characters was a blast too.
Kate has been friends with the board game cafe owner since early school days and now that winter is here business is not only slowing down in the cafe but around town in general.

With dark approaching earlier there just doesn’t seem to be the draw from the business there was in the summer. Marketing guru Kate overhears her friend lamenting about lack of business during this cold and dreary time and knows she has to do something to jump start business for the cafe but also around town. The plan she comes up with is genius and in such a short amount of time.

A lot of the time is spent talking about this plan and its marvelous final results and I loved every minute of it.
I was so glad to see Kate had cleared up a big misunderstanding she had with her father, and it has brought their relationship closer.

There is also a possibility of a romance brewing for Kate with two very different personality types. There were some laugh out loud moments in the book and some awww moments too.

I also enjoyed learning about some Polish Christmas traditions too and even looked up a few more to learn more about it.
A very well received book, I enjoyed it so much!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

Favorite school subject ?🏫🎒

What was your favorite subject in school?

I very much enjoyed creative writing and English class. When I was 13 we moved to Yuma, AZ and were in Arizona for two years. I decided I would take Spanish since there were quite a few speaking it around me. Let’s just say, I didn’t do so well. My oldest son took 3 years of it and did very well though.

Blog Tour THE MEMORY DRESS by Jade Beer

ABOUT THE BOOK

England, 2018: Jayne is quiet. She keeps to herself and has no grand expectations for her days. But after a chance encounter with her elderly neighbor, Meredith, Jayne is forced to reevaluate her determination to keep the world at a distance. Meredith’s dust-covered home is chaotic and neglected. And slowly, Jayne starts to grasp that Meredith herself is quite lost. She can’t seem to remember anything: what she last ate, when she last went out or saw her daughter, or even Jayne’s name, despite what are becoming frequent visits.

But most alarmingly, Meredith can’t remember where her husband is.

Unable to sit by and watch Meredith hurting, Jayne promises she’ll find William. But how can she when the biggest clue Jayne has is a mystery itself: a stunning couture gown with a note declaring it a personal gift to Meredith…from Princess Diana.

England, 1988: Meredith is always calm. You have to be when working for one of the most iconic women in the world. Just as the stitches she uses to create Princess Diana’s wardrobe are steady and stable, so is Meredith. Until she finds herself feeling off-kilter and untethered by an unexpected connection with someone in the workshop. As Meredith finds herself swept up in life and love for the first time, everything she’s ever dreamed about seems in reach…if only she can be brave enough to take it.

MY THOUGHTS

This book has such substance to it a heartfelt and emotional book. A very telling story.

Jayne, a dog walker in an apartment building, friends with some of the other apartment dwellers but had never met Merideth, an elderly woman whom she senses needs some help when they do meet.

Jayne and Merideth form a strong and caring friendship, each benefitting from it in a different way. Jayne visits Meredith daily yet needs to introduce herself each time as Meredith doesn’t remember her, or even when she ate last.

My grandmother went through dementia and it’s so tragic and she as Meredith are so vulnerable. Meredith was a famous seamstress sewing for royalty now she can’t even remember where her husband is or why her daughter never visits her.

You will be immersed in the world of dressmaking from years ago as you make a discovery about an important missing society dress. To be taken inside the mind of someone with dementia is tragically sad but wonderful to see moments of clarity as memories of the past are recalled.

A special friendship discovered as cherished memories are shared. I enjoyed visiting the locations through the book the women visited and reading about their details. They sounded like fun trips. Very well written. Highly recommended!

Little things I’m grateful for

In the busyness of life and with all the stresses we have piled on us daily it’s easy to overlook little things that make us grateful, myself included.

As busy parents we can often feel unappreciated and feel as though they just expect us to do certain things and don’t appreciate it or give a thank you.

Tonight’s dinner was a simple affair, one pot of spaghetti with ground beef, one with no meat, garlic bread and also a loaf of fresh Italian bread. At the table tonight were my husband and I and five of our sons. As each got up to leave the table they thanked me for dinner, from thanks Mom to , delicious darling (my husband) to thanks for dinner and delicious Mom, thank you . Yes, they always thank me for dinner but I’ve not been having an easy time of things lately with the stress of my sick cat so this just really made me happy and I appreciated hearing how much they enjoyed dinner.

Have a wonderful evening.

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl. This weeks theme is a sort of choose your own with the theme being Books with (________) on the cover and we fill in the blank. This week I’m choosing covers with cats since I’m such a big cat fan as my three cats snuggle on the bed here. I may have gone overboard and thrown in a few extra covers as I have so many cat cover books to read. Most of these are cozy mysteries. Hope you’re having a wonderful day.
