TOP TEN TUESDAY

TOP TEN TUESDAY

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted at Jana’s blog That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is Top Ten Mainstream Popular Authors that I Still Have Not Read.

Before Mrs. Beeton and well before Julia Child, there was Eliza Acton, who changed the course of cookery writing forever.

England, 1835. London is awash with thrilling new ingredients, from rare spices to exotic fruits. But no one knows how to use them. When Eliza Acton is told by her publisher to write a cookery book instead of the poetry she loves, she refuses—until her bankrupt father is forced to flee the country. As a woman, Eliza has few options. Although she’s never set foot in a kitchen, she begins collecting recipes and teaching herself to cook. Much to her surprise she discovers a talent – and a passion – for the culinary arts.

Eliza hires young, destitute Ann Kirby to assist her. As they cook together, Ann learns about poetry, love and ambition. The two develop a radical friendship, breaking the boundaries of class while creating new ways of writing recipes. But when Ann discovers a secret in Eliza’s past, and finds a voice of her own, their friendship starts to fray.

Based on the true story of the first modern cookery writer, Miss Eliza’s English Kitchen is a spellbinding novel about female friendship, the struggle for independence, and the transcendent pleasures and solace of food.

For Iris, each visit to her mother in St Mabon’s Cove, Cornwall has been the same – a serene escape from the city. But today, as she breathes in the salt air on the doorstep of her beloved childhood home, a heavy weight of anticipation settles over her. Iris knows she’s adopted, but any questions about where she came from have always been shut down by her parents, who can’t bear to revisit the past.

Now, Iris can’t stop thinking about what she’s read on the official paperwork: BABY GIRL, FRANCE, 1939 – the year war was declared with Nazi Germany.

When Iris confronts her mother, she hits the same wall of pain and resistance as whenever she mentions the war. That is, until her mother tearfully hands her an old tin of letters, tucked neatly beside a delicate piece of ivory wool.

Retreating to the loft, Iris steels herself to at last learn the truth, however painful it might be. But, as she peels back each layer of history before her, a sensation of dread grows inside her. The past is calling, and its secrets are more intricate and tangled than Iris could ever have imagined.

The year is 1939, and in Paris, France a young woman is about to commit a terrible betrayal…

Cora Matthews’s life is a mess. A broken engagement and the unexpected death of her mother have left her wondering if things will ever return to normal. Whatever “normal” is.

It certainly isn’t what she finds at Moonberry Lake. After she receives her family’s dilapidated lakefront lodge as an inheritance–with a surprising condition attached–Cora finds her life overrun by a parade of eccentric neighbors who all have something to say and something to teach her.

As Cora works to put her life back together, she must decide if she is willing to let go of the past, open her heart to love, and embrace the craziest version of family and home she could ever have imagined.

Barlowe Theater stole the life of Greta Mercy’s eldest brother during its construction. Now in 1915, the completed theater appears every bit as deadly. When Greta’s younger brother goes missing after breaking into the building, Greta engages the assistance of a local police officer to help her unveil the already ghostly secrets of the theater. But when help comes from an unlikely source, Greta decides that to save her family she must uncover the evil that haunts the theater and put its threat to rest.

Decades later, Kit Boyd’s best friend vanishes during a ghost walk at the Barlowe Theater, and old stories of mysterious disappearances and ghoulish happenings are revived. Then television ghost-hunting host and skeptic Evan Fisher joins Kit in the quest to identify the truth behind the theater’s history. Kit reluctantly agrees to work with him in hopes of finding her missing friend. As the theater’s curse unravels Kit’s life, she is determined to put an end to the evil that has marked the theater and their hometown for the last century.

London, Present day. As Ella looks down at a faded black and white photograph of an unknown woman and child alongside a yellowing piece of sheet music, she wonders how the two things can possibly relate to her own family. The items were left for her family at Hope’s House, a home for unmarried mothers whose babies were adopted.

Soon Ella learns that the photograph was taken on the picturesque Greek island of Skopelos, nestled in the turquoise calming waters of the Aegean sea, and that the woman in the photo holds the key to her family’s heritage. As she opens up to her new flame Gabriel, he tells her that she should go to the island to unravel the mystery and that he will wait for her.

Though Ella is torn she decides to go and once there, she discovers a heart-wrenching story of a royal family forced to leave their country for a new life in London, and of a girl with a unique talent for music who captured the heart of a young violinist but was forced to leave him and London behind for the sake of her family.

When Ella discovers the sacrifice made by the two young lovers and comes face to face with her forgotten Greek family, will their story give her the courage to follow her own heart back to London and Gabriel, or will the beauty of the island capture her heart and lead her to a new love altogether?

A therapist and self-help writer with all the answers, Sarah Slade has just bought a gorgeous Victorian in the community of her dreams. Turns out, you can get a killer deal on a house where someone was murdered. Plus, renovating Black Wood House makes for great blog content and a decent distraction from her failing marriage. Good thing nobody knows that her past is just as filthy as the bloodstain on her bedroom floor.

But the renovations are fast becoming a nightmare. Sarah imagined custom avocado wallpaper, massive profits, and an appreciative husband who wants to share her bed again. Instead, the neighbors hate her guts and her husband still sleeps on the couch. And though the builders attempt to cover up Black Wood’s horrifying past, a series of bizarre accidents, threatening notes, and unexplained footsteps in the attic only confirms for Sarah what the rest of the town already knew: Something is very wrong in that house.

With every passing moment, Sarah’s life spirals further out of control—and with it, her sense of reality. But as she peels back the curling wallpaper and discovers the house’s secrets, she realizes that the deadly legacy of Black Wood House has only just begun.

After her divorce, Ruth McCoy is eager to trade her children’s painful memories for new holiday traditions. But Ruth has a whole new set of distractions when fate brings the man she once loved together with the son he never knew he had…

Life has thrown Judd Rankin some tough turns, and he’s startled by the feelings he still has for Ruth. Though the successful rancher knows better than to chase old dreams, he doesn’t mind lending the struggling single mom a hand. And when Judd sees Ruth’s teenaged son’s interest in his custom saddle business, he’s happy to let the boy help him build the harness for Branding Iron’s Christmas sleigh. Besides, the kid reminds Judd of the young man he once was. A man who believed anything was possible…

Powerless to deny the growing bond between her son and Judd, Ruth knows it’s only a matter of time before her secret is discovered. But will the revelation shatter the tender feelings between her and Judd—or turn out to be her family’s greatest gift?

England, 1942. ‘It has to stay secret,’ he whispers, placing the locket around her neck. ‘If they find it, they’ll send me away.’ As she holds the locket, glinting in the moonlight, she can’t hold back the tears. ‘I just wish we didn’t have to hide…’

At the turn of the twentieth century, sisters Emmy and Callie Bullock are living a privileged life as the only daughters of a wealthy Alabama cotton farmer when their well-ordered household gets turned upside down by the arrival of Lily McGee. Arrestingly beautiful, Lily quickly–and innocently–draws the wrong kind of attention. Meanwhile, Callie meets a man who offers her the freedom to abandon social constraints and discover her truest self.

After Lily has a baby, Callie witnesses something she was never meant to see–or did she? Her memory is a haze, just an image in her mind of Emmy standing on a darkened riverbank and cradling Lily’s missing baby girl. Only when the sisters are separated does the truth slowly come to light through their letters–including a revelation that will shape the rest of Callie’s life.

Bestselling author Valerie Fraser Luesse weaves a complex and suspenseful tale dripping with intrigue, romance, and Southern charm.

A small-town baker learns to raise her expectations for love with some help from a handsome local teacher in this sunny romantic comedy.

Layla Dupree has given up on love. She’s waded through all the fish in the sea, each one more disappointing than the last. Apparently, owning the bakery at Inglewild’s most romantic destination does not help one’s love life—despite Layla’s best efforts. All she wants is a partner who gives her butterflies, not someone who ghosts her at dinner and leaves her with the check.

Good thing Caleb Alvarez has the perfect solution. After saving Layla from another date gone bad, he has a simple proposition: one month of no-strings dating. He’ll do his best to renew her faith in men while she rates his romantic game. It’s a win-win situation. All the benefits of dating without the added pressure of feelings and unmet expectations.

But there’s one ingredient they haven’t considered. The chemistry between them is red-hot, and the urge to take things to the next level is more tempting than Layla’s mocha fudge brownies.

These certainly aren’t all of them but here’s a stack of books I’ve really enjoyed so far this year. What about you, have you read and enjoyed any of these?

Have a terrific day. Thanks for stopping in.

Season of My Enemy (Heroines of WWII)

258 pages Barbour publisher June 01,2022 publish date grab a copy here

ABOUT THE BOOK

Full of intrigue, adventure, and romance, this series celebrates the unsung heroes—the heroines of WWII.

Only last year, Fannie O’Brien was considered a beauty with a brain, and her future shone bright, despite the war pounding Europe. With her father’s sudden death and her brothers overseas, Fannie must now do the work of three men on their 200-acre farm—until eight German prisoners arrive and, just as Fannie feared, trouble comes too. Someone seems intent on causing “accidents,” and Fannie is certain the culprit is one of the two handsome older Germans—or possibly both. Can she manage the farm, keep the prisoners in line, and hold her family together through these turbulent times?

MY THOUGHTS

This book has an interesting take on WWII. So many books have been written about the men off fighting the war on foreign soil. This one takes place on American soil and is about the people left at home while their loved ones are off fighting.

A woman missing her husband, recently widowed is running their Wisconsin farm along with her two daughters and a son. Her two older sons are in Germany fighting the war. Missing them desperately every day they pray for their safe arrival back home.

One thing I had never heard of was German POW’s being held were used as laborers at farms with a guard at every work area. The farms still needed planting and harvesting to provide for themselves and those on the frontline.

The author brings to life the feelings the characters have in the many situations they are forced to endure.

There is a light romance, but I am glad that it wasn’t the focal point of the book. I enjoyed the information the author presented, especially in her notes in the back of the book. I’ve learned so much from this series.

A Cosy Cottage Escape Blog Tour-Little Duck Pond Cafe

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Cosy Cottage Escape, Little Duck Pond Café

Autumn is here and the Little Duck Pond Café crew are looking forward to spending a relaxing week in the country. That’s the theory, anyway. Because when they arrive, they quickly become immersed in village life after a power cut, only to find themselves spooked at every turn by mysterious goings-on, all of which seem to be connected to the creepy old house next-door. Is someone playing scary Hallowe’en tricks on them? Or is there something rather more sinister afoot…?

MY THOUGHTS

I am a big fan of Rosie Green’s Little Duck Pond Cafe series.

Each book is a novella length, so you don’t get bogged down with too much reading, but you get a full story in each book that isn’t lacking anything. I enjoy returning to the same characters and after reading quite a few in this series I feel as though the characters are friends to visit and put the kettle on for.

Getting away for a week should leave you relaxed and with no worries except for maybe what types of tasty foods you’ll choose to eat. The Little Duck Pond Cafe crew is on a relaxing getaway in the village.

The weather is cooler, the leaves have turned and it’s close to Halloween. A power outage is unfortunately a pretty common thing in the rural village and just their luck, they’ve encountered one. But hey, life happens and trying to make the best of it they carry on.

When rumors of hauntings associated with the house next door reach their ears and then other strange things start going bump in the night they wonder, are these Halloween pranks or something to become actually concerned about.

There is a mystery to solve and a few dramatic moments with the friends. I’d say my favorite part of the book takes place almost at the very end, a very unexpected and wonderful ending. I am looking forward to more in this series and can’t wait to see what the friends are up to next.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Sunset on the Square: Escape on a Spanish holiday with this heartwarming love story (Island Romance Book 3)

250 pages February 25, 2021 publish date Canelo Romance publisher grab a copy here

Tropical beach vector illustration background

ABOUT THE BOOK

She never thought she’d love again…

In her late 50s and having lived in Tenerife for over 15 years, there’s not much on the island that can surprise widowed Elspeth. Until her hotelier friend asks her to put up a guest after they’ve overbooked – and handsome Charles is suddenly staying in very close quarters.

Long buried emotions are coming back to life.

Devastated by the death of her husband four years ago, Elspeth isn’t open to new romance. Yet something about Charles pulls her in, and they grow closer together. But Charles’ holiday is drawing to a close, and Elspeth needs to decide what she really wants – and how to get it.

The perfect holiday romance for fans of Holly Martin, Sue Moorcroft and Mandy Baggot.

MY THOUGHTS

I enjoy reading Lilac Mills books. They have a minimal amount of drama and always have a hea.

The descriptions of the little town of Santiago del Teide sound so refreshing. April would be the perfect month to visit with the sun coming up over the inactive volcano, light rain and year-round greenery giving way to an abundance of flowers.

Elspeth Evans is a middle-aged woman, widowed four years. She misses her husband so much. They were everything to each other and it’s still hard to believe he’s gone.

She occasionally rents a few rooms to make ends meet. She meets Charles Brown; her first male to rent a room since her husband has passed and does it ever feel strange to have another male in her home that’s not her husband. After he arrives he seems like a nice, presentable and polite gent. As they talk and get to know each other she recommends things to do, like hiking on the beautiful trails.

A misunderstanding gets her going along as a tour guide and they have a genuinely good and fun time and conversation. Though she’s not ready to meet and mingle she has started noticing how good looking he is and enjoying his company. He’s a divorced father of 2 grown daughters.

They breakfast together and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. When it’s time for him to leave will this friendship be swept away in the tides or will the island and her have a magnetic pull on him making him return?

The author writes a fun and realistic book from the heart. Family relationships are important, and the characters draw you in to care about them.

Catch Me If You Candy: (A Bakeshop Mystery, 17)

352 pages Pub Date 22 Aug 2023 St. Martin’s Press publisher

Easy Halloween cupcakes

ABOUT THE BOOK

Things are getting spooky in Catch Me If You Candy, the next delicious installment in the Bakeshop Series from author Ellie Alexander, set in Ashland, Oregon!

Halloween has arrived in picturesque Ashland, Oregon, and all of the ghouls and goblins have descended on Main Street for the annual parade. It’s a giant street party and Torte is right in the mix.

Jules Capshaw and her team have been baking up autumn delights and trick-or-Torte bags filled with sugar cookie cutouts, spiced cider, and mummy munch. It’s the end of the season at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which means that the costumes for the parade are going to be out of this world. The elaborate guises even extend to pets. The grand marshal of this year’s parade is no other than a regal pug aptly named King George. Jules is delighted to get to share the experience with Carlos and Ramiro, but things take a dark turn when she discovers a dragon slumped in front of the bakeshop.

Jules is distraught when she realizes the dragon is dead. She’s also shaken because a few days before the parade, her mother’s Mahjong partner Helen discovered a warning note about a dragon in an antique game set. Jules hopes it’s just a random coincidence, but as the clues begin to unfold it becomes evident that there’s been a murder on All Hallow’s Eve. Can Juliet sift out the truth before the killer comes after her?

MY THOUGHTS

Catch me if You Candy is the seventeenth book in the Bakeshop mystery series. I haven’t read all of them but have read quite a few.

Ashland, Oregon is the home of Torte, the bakeshop owned by Jules Capshaw. She and her bakers are busy firing up the ovens almost around the clock with all the Halloween treats everyone wants. Taking a break to run some goodies to her mother’s weekly mahjong party an ominous note is found in the ancient board game set bought at a thrift store.

As the end of the Shakespearean season settles upon Ashland, the town gathers around a Halloween parade costumed adults and children alike enjoy attending.
When a slumped over dragon, the same one talked about in the mahjong game note is found dead in front of her bakeshop, Jules is devastated.

With clues piling up faster than the Halloween candy the trick or treaters are clutching in their grubby hands, who can you trust? Is anyone telling the truth or will this one be all tricks and no treats?

Cleverly written with a great plot and lots of descriptive Autumn cheer this is the perfect book to settle in with on a cold Fall night with your hot cup of coffee or tea.

Game Over at Guild Hall (A Vermont Country Living Mystery Book 3)

265 pages November 14, 2023 publication date Beyond the Page publisher

9 undeniable signs it’s Fall in Vermont

MY THOUGHTS

Well, a few weeks ago we traveled to the New England states and Vermont was one of the states we went to. The book takes place in Fall and has vivid descriptions of the rural countryside and colorful leaves, just what we saw on our trip. I was able to perfectly visualize it.

Game hunting is very popular this time of year in such a rural area of Vermont. In fact, it’s such a big deal the locals even have an annual wild game supper at Guild Hall. Then the long-time organizer and taste tester of the event drops dead. He is the one who determines who can participate next year if he like’s your food or not.

As the suspects pile up like the fallen leaves no one can be ruled out at this point. In this continuing series Stella finds the victim has made many enemies over the years by shunning hunter’s game offerings and volunteers at the dinner find themselves run ragged to cater to the overwhelming number of guests.

Well plotted this was a solid mystery that pointed in the direction of a lot of suspects and a surprise twist ending.

Blog Tour for Christmas Memories at Waterside Cottage by K.T.Dady

ABOUT THE BOOK

Christmas Memories at Waterside Cottage

Welcome to Pepper Bay, where you’ll find love, drama, and a happily ever after.

Snuggle down with this cosy, feel-good, comfort read that whisks you away to a beautiful bay on the Isle of Wight – Perfect for fans of Christie Barlow, Alison Sherlock, Rachael Lucas, and Holly Martin.

The Pepper Bay books are standalone stories that intertwine with recurring characters. Best enjoyed when read in order.

Christmas Memories at Waterside Cottage: Charlie and Grace have been together for four years, but when Grace wakes up in hospital after an accident, she doesn’t remember her husband at all. With Christmas just around the corner, and it being their favourite time of year, Charlie pulls out all the festive stops, hoping his wife will remember their relationship or at least fall in love with him all over again, because there is no way he can lose her.

MY THOUGHTS

I have read several books in the Pepper Bay series. They are not long books but believe me, you get a full story. The books are heartwarming and realistic with a little drama and a few things to work through in life.

No one’s idea of fun would be to wake up in a hospital with some of their memory gone, but this is exactly what happens to our main female character. Family is everything in this book. I love seeing the family comradery. She has several sisters and parents giving her support.

Now I just loved her husband’s character. He is incredibly supportive. She doesn’t remember being married to him and I wasn’t sure until very close to the end if she would want to stay with him as memories resurfaced, if she would fall in love with him anew or she wouldn’t feel comfortable staying with him.
I could understand if he would become frustrated or mad at her for her lack of memory but he’s so gentle and understanding, not rushing her and her feelings.

I loved the compassion shown to the donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary. Animals make a story better and bring out the compassion in people.
This Christmas book is fun and festive and will put you in the holiday mood with its snowmen, holiday drinks and family time spent at a Christmas tree farm.

Warm and beautifully written I will now be catching up on the rest of the series.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

Getaway With Murder: The Mountain Lodge Mysteries

296 pages October 26, 2021publish date St. Martins Paperbacks

ABOUT THE BOOK

Getaway With Murder is the first in a cozy series from Diane Kelly set in a lodge in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where secrets hide behind every hill.

As if hitting the half-century mark wasn’t enough, Misty Murphy celebrated her landmark birthday by amicably ending her marriage and investing her settlement in a dilapidated mountain lodge at the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With the old inn teetering on both a bluff and bankruptcy, she must have lost her ever-loving mind.

Luckily, handyman Rocky Crowder has a knack for rehabbing virtual ruins and for doing it on a dime, and to Misty’s delight, the lodge is fully booked on opening night, every room filled with flexible folks who’d slipped into spandex and ascended the peak for a yoga retreat with plans to namastay for a full week. Misty and her guests are feeling zen—at least until the yoga instructor is found dead.

With a killer on the loose and the lodge’s reputation hanging in the balance, Misty must put her detective-skills to the test. Only one thing is as clear as a sunny mountain morning—she must solve the crime before the lodge ends up, once again, on the brink.

Blue Ridge Mountains North Carolina credit

MY THOUGHTS

After having just read A Trip with Trouble, the second book in the Mountain Lodge mystery series I was more than ready to read this one, the first in the series. Who says you have to read a series in order, right?

We once again find ourselves in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina with middle aged Misty Murphy. She’s finally doing something for herself, she’s ended her marriage and bought a rundown lodge that’s slowly being repaired.

Excited that her first big group has come to stay at the lodge she’s doing all she can to make them comfy during their stay including having scrumptious meals brought in from the restaurant next door. The group staying is here for a whole week of relaxation on a yoga retreat. Sun salutations are part of their yoga and meditation but when the leader is unable to be found one bright and sunny morning to lead the class the others start to worry. When she is later found dead at the lodge, speculation starts to run rampant with no Zen moments here.

Could one of the yoga students have gotten tired of her bossy and stuck on herself behavior enough to kill her or was it a random outsider? As the clues start to collect, we see Misty working hard to get this solved along with the police, so her lodge won’t get a bad reputation.

What a great plot this is. I loved the characters and the setting. I am now on my way to read the last book in this series.

Blog Tour-Chasing Dreams at Wagging Tails’ Dogs Home

ABOUT THE BOOK

Chasing Dreams At Wagging Tails Dog’s Home

After a difficult break-up, Poppy is keen to put the past behind her and what’s better than some relaxing time with her aunt in the picturesque Cornish village of West Par.

But life at her aunt Flora’s Dogs’ Home is anything but relaxing. When a poor little pup is stranded at the gates, Poppy takes them for a check up at the local vet, hoping against hope they’ll be fine.

And there she meets Mack: the vet who is so charming and experienced with the dogs, but selfish and – dare she say it – money-grabbing with his clients.

But underneath that cold exterior, she’s sure there’s more to the story. If only she could convince him to open up. Because without him, the future of Wagging Tails isn’t so assured…

MY THOUGHTS

After a bad breakup leaves Poppy wishing it was more on than off, she knows just the thing to do. She’ll help her aunt at the Wagging Tails Dogs Home her aunt runs and funds herself with very little financial outside help.

has been there before multiple times helping her aunt at her pet rescue but not recently. The Cornish village of West Par should be the perfect relaxation spot with the dogs and her aunt for Poppy, but it’s not.

When a new vet comes to the practice her aunt has used for many years and won’t give her the same discounts the old vet had it causes problems. When you’re running a dog rescue you need breaks, and lot of breaks. No one can do it on their own.

I really loved Poppy’s aunts’ character, she has a heart of gold for animals and people alike. She tries to hide her financial problems from Poppy but a new pup, one abandoned at the pet rescue needs multiple surgeries and care.

When her sweet aunt has an accident Poppy finds out how bad they are financially and becomes angry with the vet blaming him for not compromising with vet care and discounts. We see Poppy having a bit of a difficult time getting over her ex-boyfriend and carrying baggage. The vet is also hiding a secret that he is ashamed to have known. Very few people know his background and why he can’t offer discounts for pet service even though his veterinarian office is now thriving.

Will Poppy and the vet come to an agreement with vet service?

I absolutely loved this book and the series. So many charming elements in here. The characters are realistic and likable. The plot is well throughout out and I could picture what was happening in the book as I read it.

This book is a warm hug wrapped around me as I read.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
