The Unplanned Christmas Family: An Uplifting Inspirational Romance (Heartland Sweethearts Book 3)

215 pages Love Inspired publisher Publication dateOctober 22, 2024

ABOUT THE BOOK

’Tis the season for a fresh start…

and a second chance at love.

After a stressful season, event planner Natalie Cooper has strict instructions from her doctor: rest. But when her grandmother volunteers her to plan her retirement community’s Christmas fundraiser, she can’t say no. Now she’s being roped into working alongside the home’s director, Thad MacDougall. The grumpy single father’s priority is his relationship with his son, and Natalie’s workaholic tendencies have them butting heads over every detail. But through hot cocoa and ice fishing with Thad and his son, Natalie’s about to discover that her chaos-filled holiday break might be just what the doctor ordered…

From Love Inspired: Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.

MY THOUGHTS

I am delighted to continue reading the Heartland Sweetheart series, this is number three.
That is takes place in Iowa is another thing I love about this series. My daughter lives in Iowa and being from Pennsylvania I thought I knew a thing or two about winter. Well let me tell you, Iowa winters are brutal. The wind absolutely goes right through you. Iowa is beautiful though and very progressive, a wonderful place to visit.

Event planner Natalie has been told to take it a bit easier because of her health. A staycation of sorts. She is not the type to sit idle and try as she may when grandma at the retirement home asks for her help with the retirement community Christmas fundraiser, she simply can’t say no. Grandma wasn’t privy to the doctors’ words of wisdom.

Meeting Thad MacDougall, grumpy single dad and the retirement home’s director seems to be one fiasco after another. Not able to agree on anything except for their secret attraction for each other they start bonding when she meets his precious son.

I loved how well they started getting on as they spend more and more time together event planning often with his son there. Natalie is a workaholic, not able to let the thought of someone else plan or have much input in the Christmas fundraising event. She knows she can do it bigger and better. When things don’t works as planned will she concede things are better when you have help and ideas from others?

Lovely and uplifting inspirational fiction with an upbeat Christmas theme.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

Amish and the holidays-Book reviews, Amish Christmas Kinner and Thanksgiving Blessing

270 pages October 24,2023 publish date Berkley publisher buy link

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Promise Glen is struck by a vandalism spree around the Thanksgiving holiday, a community’s values—and two weathered hearts—are put to the test.

As a widow with two-year-old twins and a struggling orchard, Rebecca King’s dreams of expanding her business seem near impossible. To make matters worse, a troublesome string of destructive acts around Promise Glen threatens her roadside fruit and vegetable stand, forcing Rebecca to accept the help of her condescending new neighbor, Nathan Mueller.

Nathan didn’t intend to offend Rebecca with his offer to share the stand, especially since he’s a widower and single parent himself. He admires Rebecca’s strength and kindness in the face of adversity. If only they hadn’t started off on the wrong foot…

Despite their best efforts to shield their hearts, working side by side through the busy harvest plants the seeds of a budding friendship. But when the vandalism spreading through Promise Glen escalates to arson and rumors blaze through the town, they’ll have to learn to rely on each other more than ever. As Thanksgiving approaches, Rebecca and Nathan are forced to reconcile with their own grief, forgive what can’t be changed, and come to truly understand the core values of the holiday: love and gratitude.

MY THOUGHTS

This is the third and final book in the Amish Holiday series with the others being a holiday Easter and Christmas book.
I enjoyed reading this Thanksgiving book so close to Thanksgiving. Filled with pumpkins, harvests, apple cider and a farmers market stand the book is seasonally appropriate.

We are once again back in Promise Glen, a rural area with widowed Amish woman Rebecca King and her twin babies. The twins are rascals but utterly adorable as they babble In Pennsylvania Dutch. She dreams of expanding her orchard, but the babies take her time. Accepting help from her neighbor, who doesn’t always have the kindest things to say isn’t what she wants but she may have to take it.

I’m always pleased to see how the Amish come together to help each other. The community works as one, no matter what needs done they are there for each other.
The story has a bit of a mystery to it and an unexpected romance for one of our characters.

The romantic characters each have problems that they are experiencing but they work through it together and help each other heal.
The author writes a realistic Amish story, family, faith and love are strongly shown.

THE AUTHOR

I realized I wanted to be a writer at age eight, when I read my first Nancy Drew novel, The Secret of the Old Clock. Most little girl reach the end of that book wanting to be Nancy. I wanted to be the person who created the story!

The dream lay hidden for years while I became a teacher, married, had children…all the usual things. But eventually it re-surfaced, and I began to write, beginning with short children’s stories for Sunday school take-home papers. It seemed a long time until that first acceptance, but eventually I began to sell. After some three hundred published short stories, I finally found the courage to work on the novel I’d always wanted to write.

Sixty-some published novels later, I still feel the same excitement every time I begin a new book–a mix of not believing I can do it combined with an overwhelming urge to see the story on the page.

A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and my own Pennsylvania Dutch roots eventually led me to the books I’m writing now about the Amish. The Pleasant Valley Amish series from Berkley Books are longer, more complex emotional stories with Amish main characters, while my forthcoming HQN suspense novels are more adventure-filled books set in Pennsylvania Dutch country. I’m also writing a Love Inspired series about the Amish, The Brides of Lost Creek.

When I’m not writing, I’m busy with church activities, traveling, and spending time with my three children and six beautiful grandchildren.

About The Book

rudy Yoder shares a passion for birding with Micah Weaver–and she has an even greater passion for Micah. Their friendship is finally turning romantic when Micah abruptly grows cold. Worse still, he wants to leave Stoney Ridge.

Micah Weaver thought he was over Trudy’s older sister. A year and a half ago, Shelley had broken his heart when she ran away from Stoney Ridge to pursue a singing career in Nashville. Then, out of the blue, she’s started to leave distressing phone messages for him.

When the bishop asks for volunteers to scout out a possible church relocation in Tennessee, Micah is the first to raise his hand. Despite scant details, he’s confident he can find Shelley. After all, his reputation as a field guide is based on finding birds that don’t want to be found.

What Micah doesn’t know is that what you’re looking for isn’t always what you find.

My Thoughts

I have read most books by this author and all in this series. I have and will continue to enjoy the Stoney Ridge series. I enjoy the fact there are so many recurring characters in the books, so we know what to expect from their personalities.

This is the second book about birding in this series. It is a topic unusual for an Amish book, but I am enjoying it. The birding takes place mostly in Pennsylvania where I live so I am familiar with the birds. Another thing I enjoy about the books is how realistic they are.

The author is not afraid to show weakness and fear, a sense of uncertainty and a vulnerableness to the characters. She also shows remarkable strength as they lean on God to get them through. An inspirational feel-good book that has subtle lessons, but they are not condescending.

God shows us that through him what we are looking for may be right in front of us and what we already have. This book is such a blessing to have read. It is such an encouragement. I received a complimentary copy from Revell Books and Interviews and Reviews. All opinions expressed are my own.

Blind Trust (The SNAP Agency Book #3) series conclusion by Natalie Walters

313 pages April 11, 2023 publication date Revell publisher

About The Book

Lyla Fox knows she has a reputation at the SNAP Agency for impulsivity, but when she receives a threatening letter from a man she helped put in prison, she can’t stop herself from going all in to find out why he’s coming after her. Unfortunately, she’s going to need the help of the one person who questions her reckless choices more than anyone else.

Explosives and weapons specialist Nicolás Garcia agrees to help Lyla in order to keep her safe, but her recklessness continues to be a major concern, especially when her investigation into a conspiracy puts a target on her back. Dealing with bombs is dangerous. Working with Lyla is proving to be just as treacherous–to both the mission and his heart.

Natalie Walters closes out her SNAP Agency series with a bang with this nail-biting story of a deadly government conspiracy, an unlikely couple, and an ending that will leave you breathless.

The Series

CIA analyst Brynn Taylor developed a new program to combat terrorism, and she invited members of foreign intelligence agencies to America to foster cooperation between countries. Now one of them, Egyptian spy Remon Riad, is missing.

Jack Hudson has been working for the Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency (SNAP) for almost nine years and takes the lead in hunting down the missing spy. But he isn’t at all pleased to find out Brynn is involved. It’s hard to trust a woman who’s already betrayed you.

Every lead they follow draws them dangerously deeper into an international plot. Kidnapping, murder, explosions, poisoning–the terrorists will do anything to accomplish their goal of causing a digital blackout that will blind a strategic US military communications center and throw the world into chaos.

Can Brynn surrender control to a man who doesn’t trust her? And can Jack ever get over what she did to him? The fate of the world–and their hearts–hangs in the balance.

“Walters pulls out all the stops in her start to her new SNAP Agency series, presenting a pulse-pounding tale of romantic suspense mixed with a sweet second-chance romance. Fans of Lynette Eason and Rachel Dylan will appreciate an introduction to Walters.”–Booklist

My Thoughts

It’s hard to believe this series is over. I’ve been following it from the start. The author really knows how to write romantic suspense, With all that has happened in the series so far, I wasn’t sure what circumstances the characters would face or what situations they would find themselves in. But I knew it would be intense and I wasn’t disappointed.
When the author first introduced us to characters, Lyla Fox and Nicolas Garcia, I just knew it would become something more between them and they would be showing up again.
There was a wild ride, and this is a great ending to the S.N.A.P. Agency series.

Published April 1, 2023.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

The Author

My world revolves around GIJOE and our three adult (or almost adult) children who keep my life anything but predictable. Our boots hit the ground wherever the Army sends us, but home is when we’re all together no matter the zipcode. My passion is writing stories where adventure meets love and share my belief that life rooted in purpose is a story worth telling.

Blog Tour for The Stable Boy of Auschwitz: A heartbreaking true story of courage and survival by Henry Oster and Dexter Ford

285 pages April 4,2023 publication date Publisher Thread

About The Book

I found myself in the Auschwitz stables, and I felt an ember of hope. If I could make myself useful, helping these horses, maybe I could stay alive.”

In the darkest moment of history, one child found the courage and strength to survive the unimaginable. This is Henry’s true story.

One hot, humid day in July, 1943, the Gestapo abducted fifteen-year-old Henry and his mother, forcing them onto cramped cattle cars in the Łódź Polish Ghetto. Like so many Jews before them, they had been selected to disappear – they were being sent to Auschwitz.

Exhausted after hours of traveling, they finally emerged from the stifling, filth-ridden cattle car. Already devastated at having lost his father to starvation, Henry clutched his mother’s frail hand, knowing she was all he had left in the world, and that he was the only one left to protect her. In a flash, he felt them being brutally torn apart.

Crying out for her, his heart shuddered as he watched her disappear into a sea of other women. Henry knew that was the last time he would ever see her, and he felt like he had failed her. He was now completely alone in the world.

Starving, and close to giving up all hope, Henry volunteered to work in the stables, responsible for breeding horses for the war effort. As he watched other prisoners leave and never return, Henry quickly realised these horses were his only lifeline – because every morning he was sent to the stables, was one more morning he escaped the gas chambers.

Before long, caring for the horses became a passion, and their comfort and strength gave Henry a glimmer of life and hope in an ocean of death. Although with every second that passed, Henry knew if he became too weak or made one mistake, he would be mercilessly replaced…

This is the heart-wrenching and inspirational true account of a courageous little German boy who, against all odds, after losing almost everything a human being can lose, survived to tell his story.

This book was originally published as The Kindness of the Hangman.

My Thoughts

There are accounts of people who have survived the abuse of the power of the Nazi’s but not many stories of surviving children. This is one of those stories.
Just six years old when he starts school in Cognac, Germany Jewish child Henry Oster enters school on the first day excited. Living as an only child of well to do parents he doesn’t know he’s different or Jewish until after school when the non-Jewish children attack with more than words the Jewish children. The jews have all their rights stripped away, not allowed to own businesses or homes they feel powerless, useless. Against their will they are rounded up like cattle and sent to a repurposed ghetto with broken windows a lack of food and severe overcrowding. Eventually they are sent to a concentration camp. You feel a deep empathy for these characters as their horrific conditions and treatment is revealed.
At a camp Henry is in charge of the horses because of his native German language which the horses are used to getting commands in.
I have read many historical accounts of Auschwitz and its prisoners, but this account is unlike any I’ve read before. In the face of incredible horror and danger to not only survive but to have his story told. He was a very brave person and his life, and the life of the others counted.
Such a time in history we must never forget.

The Author

n 1933 Henry Oster was just 5 years old, a carefree kindergartner in Cologne, Germany, when Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seized power. For the next 12 years Henry struggled to keep on breathing while his family, his friends and the Jews of Europe were overwhelmed by the Holocaust. Henry hid his mother from the SS in an attic in the Lodz, Poland Ghetto. He escaped a firing squad in Auschwitz. Endured a death march through the Polish winter. Formed a life-long friendship in the nightmare barracks of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Saw his friends killed by a British fighter-bomber. And came within hours of starving to death before his liberation by General Patton’s 3rd Army. Henry rebuilt his life from nothing, coming of age as a free young man in Paris. He arrived in the U.S. with no English, no money and no education. And from the ashes of a ruined past built a life full of love, joy and compassion. Now, complete with chilling documents liberated from the Nazi concentration camps themselves, his heartbreaking, triumphant story can finally be told.

Only The Beautiful by Susan Meissner is Heartbreaking but Inspirational

400 pages Berkley publisher April 18,2023 publish date

A heartrending story about a young mother’s fight to keep her daughter, and the winds of fortune that tear them apart by the USA Today bestselling author of The Nature of Fragile Things and The Last Year of the War.

About The Book

California, 1938—When she loses her parents in an accident, sixteen-year-old Rosanne is taken in by the owners of the vineyard where she has lived her whole life as the vinedresser’s daughter. She moves into Celine and Truman Calvert’s spacious house with a secret, however—Rosie sees colors when she hears sound. She promised her mother she’d never reveal her little-understood ability to anyone, but the weight of her isolation and grief prove too much for her. Driven by her loneliness she not only breaks the vow to her mother, but in a desperate moment lets down her guard and ends up pregnant. Banished by the Calverts, Rosanne believes she is bound for a home for unwed mothers, and having lost her family she treasures her pregnancy as the chance for a future one. But she soon finds out she is not going to a home of any kind, but to a place far worse than anything she could have imagined.

Austria, 1947—After witnessing firsthand Adolf Hitler’s brutal pursuit of hereditary purity—especially with regard to “different children”—Helen Calvert, Truman’s sister, is ready to return to America for good. But when she arrives at her brother’s peaceful vineyard after decades working abroad, she is shocked to learn what really happened nine years earlier to the vinedresser’s daughter, a girl whom Helen had long ago befriended. In her determination to find Rosanne, Helen discovers that while the war had been won in Europe, there are still terrifying battles to be fought at home.

My Thoughts

Only The Beautiful is absolutely heartbreaking.

California 1938, When Rosie is sixteen years old there is a tragic accident that takes her parents and brother’s life. Rosie has nowhere to go and the owners of the vineyard who her parents worked for reluctantly have taken her in. No compassion is shown to her by The Calvert’s, and she is a maid there. When she falls pregnant through no fault of her own, she is sent to an institution. Her Mama told her to never tell her secret, she has Synesthesia, (When you hear music and see shapes or see a color when you hear a word.) Because this is not an understood thing at that time this is why she was sent to an institution.
The institution practices eugenics, after her giving birth, this is forced on her.

Austria, 1947, Helen is the sister of Truman Calvert and has nannied out of the country for decades. Helen has seen many injustices including eugenics and the death of disabled people being ordered. When the children she cares for no longer need her she returns to the USA and is determined to meet and help Rosie who has aged out of the institution.

Its absolutely heartbreaking to read what has happened during the eugenics movement which began during the Progressive Era and remained active through 1940. It began in England then moved to the US and other countries.

I did enjoy Rosie’s and Helen’s characters a lot. They were kind and gracious people despite what they had endured and experienced.
I have always enjoyed reading this author’s books as she brings to light subjects that should not be forgotten. This is historical fiction at it’s best!

Good morning-Happy post for today

Homeless Man Finds Money on the Road, Spends It on Flowers and Gives Them to Random Women — Story of the Day

A homeless man finds money on the street and spends it on flowers for random women. The florist was baffled why a poor man would do such a thing instead of keeping the money to himself. So he explained to her why and she was left in tears.

We are so caught up in this dog-eat-dog world of accumulating MORE and MORE and MORE money, power, and social standing that we’ve put values like kindness and honesty on the back burner.

After all, what do you receive for being kind and honest? Perhaps some gratitude? But is that appreciation worth anything to us? The bitter truth is most of us in the modern world don’t even see the “logic” in trying to be kind and honest. But trust me, your good deeds might mean a lot to someone…

Hello, my name is Jack, and I am a homeless man. Yes, you read that right. I’ve got nothing — no money, no home, and no friends. I was on my way to a dumpster behind a neighborhood restaurant the morning I spotted several dollar bills on the road.

That day started like any other for me: dismal and hungry. I checked my pockets and realized I was right. I didn’t have a single cent with me. The only option left was to eat the leftovers from a dumpster. And where better to look for leftovers than in a dumpster near a restaurant?

I was on my way to a dumpster when I found the dollar bills. | Source: Pexels

So I was trudging in the searing heat, clutching my churning stomach and hoping not to pass out. As I crossed the first street on my way, I noticed something on the road. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing at first. In fact, I rubbed my eyes twice before picking up the multiple dollar bills that were just lying on the ground.

“This is crazy!” I thought to myself. I needed the money and had it right in front of me! I looked around for its owner, hoping they would come up to me and say, “Hey, you freak! That’s my money! Give it back!”

“Money that comes to you easily or dishonestly must be parted with promptly.”

But the whole area around me was eerily quiet with nobody in close sight. Also, names like “freak,” “bum,” and “creep” have become synonymous with my persona. That’s how people “love” referring to me.

Anyway, after finding the money, I was at a loss for what to do. I had no idea who owned it, and I had no way of contacting the cops to report it. Also, I was afraid that they would accuse me of stealing it if they found me with it. So I sat on the sidewalk, not knowing what to do.

I was hungry but didn’t want to spend that money on food. That would be dishonest and wrong. I may be poor, but I’m not a thief.

So I sat on the sidewalk for a few minutes, and then I had an idea. I dashed across the street to a flower shop. A bell rang as I entered the shop, signaling my arrival to the florist.

“Good morning,” she greeted cheerfully but grimaced when she turned to face me. When I walked in, she was busily arranging flowers. Now that we were face-to-face, I caught her name on the badge on her apron. It read “Amanda.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t offer you any money. Please leave!” she stated bluntly, glancing at my appearance. She was aware that I was a homeless man. Who wouldn’t? I hadn’t washed in days and my clothes were shabby and filthy. But she was mistaken in assuming I was there for the money.

“I don’t want any money from you,” I explained. “I need to get some flowers. I have this much money. What can I do with it?” I asked, holding up the bills I had found.

She looked confused. “Well, that could get you a whole bouquet! … But why would you spend so much money on flowers? Don’t get me wrong. A man like you could use it for yourself,” she suggested.

The florist suggested that I spend the money on myself, but I had another idea in my head. | Source: Pexels

But I shook my head. “I don’t want to,” I said. “Just get me as many flowers as you can with it.”

Amanda was understandably perplexed, but she eventually got me some flowers. As she finished wrapping them in cellophane paper and tying a ribbon around them, I gave her the cash.

She accepted the money and asked, “Are you getting these for someone special?”

“You could say that,” I replied, and Amanda looked perplexed again. So I finally explained why I wanted to buy flowers from her.

I said, “The money I just handed you is not mine. I discovered it on the side of the road. I don’t want to be dishonest. My mom once told me that the money that comes to you easily or dishonestly must be parted with promptly.

“Since I have no way of returning the money to the owner, I will distribute these flowers I bought with it to strangers. You never know; it might brighten their day. And that will mean a lot to me!”

I noticed that as I said that, Amanda had tears in her eyes. “That’s amazing…” she managed to say. “I’m sorry, I forgot to ask your name.”

I bought those flowers to put a smile on people’s faces. | Source: Pexels

“Jack,” I introduced myself. “You can call me Jack.”

“This is from me, Jack. Please get yourself something,” Amanda said, offering me some money. I was hesitant to accept it, but she assured me I had earned it by doing a good deed.

I accepted the money, thanked her, and offered the flowers to random women I met that day. Before leaving Amanda’s shop, I gave one to her too. “Have a nice day,” I said as I gave it to her.

Later that day, when I offered a rose to an older woman, she cried and hugged me. “Thank you very much, son,” she said. “I was feeling lonely today. It’s as though God sent you to comfort me. God bless you…”

I had tears in my eyes as I hugged her back. But that wasn’t the end of it all.

Seeing the old woman’s happy face made my day. | Source: Pexels

Finally, I gave my last flower to a little girl who was sitting in a park with her mom. You should have seen the smile on her face when I gave it to her. Her mother also took me to a restaurant and fed me. I had already eaten with the money Amanda had given me, but I couldn’t say no to someone who offered food to me with so much love.

Everyone I met that day was delighted when they received the flowers. To be honest, I want to thank whoever dropped that money by accident. I wish that person happiness and good luck wherever he or she may be. The money urged me to perform a noble act, and it brightened many people’s days, including mine.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Nothing beats doing what is right and good. Jack could have kept the money, but he didn’t want to be dishonest. So he spent the money wisely and did a noble act by brightening people’s days and giving them flowers.
  • One small act of kindness can put a smile on someone’s face. It isn’t a big deal to give someone flowers. It’s something that everybody can do. But here’s the thing: we don’t do it. Jack did, and his thoughtful gesture brought joy to many people.

Thank you for visiting. Have a beautiful day.
