Random Acts of Kindness

credit

It always pays to be kind.

Random acts of kindness have also been found to increase oxytocin, lowering blood pressure and improving heart health. So even if you’re the Grinch, we figure you’ll benefit from being kinder.

Nonetheless, random acts of kindness are often considered as vehicles of change. That is because they may not be able to influence the whole world, but they do make somebody’s life a whole lot better.

Random acts of kindness not only make the world a little bit brighter, but they can also have a ripple effect, inspiring others to pay it forward.

The New Years Eve Sunday Post

Christmas was a lovely day for our family. The day after Christmas after going for a routine appointment our daughter in law was admitted to the hospital to monitor her high blood pressure caused by the pregnancy of twins. She ended up being delivered of those babies that day. They are thriving and almost off oxygen and their formula amount has been increased now. Hopefully they’ll be able to go home soon.

Several of the kids got the flu and unfortunately, I got it too. I just got well from being sick a few weeks ago and got sick again :/ Just as I’m starting to feel better now my husband thinks he may be coming down with something. Think I may put him in quarantine. Just kidding but I don’t want to get sick again.

My reading has been down the past few weeks because of Christmas busyness. and sleeping instead of reading.

The elderly floor maid

Dr. Frank Mayfield was touring Tewksbury Institute when, on his way out, he accidentally collided with an elderly floor maid. To cover the awkward moment Dr. May field started asking questions.
“How long have you worked here?”
“I’ve worked here almost since the place opened,” the maid replied.
“What can you tell me about the history of this place?” he asked.
“I don’t think I can tell you anything, but I could show you something.”
With that, she took his hand and led him down to the basement under the oldest section of the building. She pointed to one of what looked like small prison cells, their iron bars rusted with age, and said, “That’s the cage where they used to keep Annie Sullivan.”
“Who’s Annie?” the doctor asked.
Annie was a young girl who was brought in here because she was incorrigible—nobody could do anything with her. She’d bite and scream and throw her food at people. The doctors and nurses couldn’t even examine her or anything. I’d see them trying with her spitting and scratching at them.
“I was only a few years younger than her myself and I used to think, ‘I sure would hate to be locked up in a cage like that.’ I wanted to help her, but I didn’t have any idea what I could do. I mean, if the doctors and nurses couldn’t help her, what could someone like me do?
“I didn’t know what else to do, so I just baked her some brownies one night after work. The next day I brought them in. I walked carefully to her cage and said, ‘Annie, I baked these brownies just for you. I’ll put them right here on the floor and you can come and get them if you want.’
“Then I got out of there just as fast as I could because I was afraid she might throw them at me. But she didn’t. She actually took the brownies and ate them. After that, she was just a little bit nicer to me when I was around. And sometimes I’d talk to her. Once, I even got her laughing.
One of the nurses noticed this and she told the doctor. They asked me if I’d help them with Annie. I said I would if I could. So that’s how it came about that. Every time they wanted to see Annie or examine her, I went into the cage first and explained and calmed her down and held her hand.
This is how they discovered that Annie was almost blind.”
After they’d been working with her for about a year—and it was tough sledding with Annie—the Perkins institute for the Blind opened its doors. They were able to help her and she went on to study and she became a teacher herself.
Annie came back to the Tewksbury Institute to visit, and to see what she could do to help out. At first, the Director didn’t say anything and then he thought about a letter he’d just received. A man had written to him about his daughter. She was absolutely unruly—almost like an animal. She was blind and deaf as well as ‘deranged.’
He was at his wit’s end, but he didn’t want to put her in an asylum. So he wrote the Institute to ask if they knew of anyone who would come to his house and work with his daughter.
And that is how Annie Sullivan became the lifelong companion of Helen Keller.
When Helen Keller was nominated for the Nobel Prize, she was asked who had the greatest impact on her life and she said, “Annie Sullivan.”
But Annie said, “No Helen. The woman who had the greatest influence on both our lives was a floor maid at the Tewksbury Institute.”

Have a marvelous day. 😃🤗

Zoo announces birth of world’s rarest giraffe that is the only one of its type

Story by Yelena Mandenberg

The MirrorUS

A Tennessee Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a very special baby giraffe by hosting a public contest searching for the perfect name to give to the world’s only spotless member of the species.

The spotless baby giraffe was born in Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee last month. In fact, zoo officials say the new baby is the world’s only spotless giraffe at all – and the rare animal is on display now.

The young sold-colored giraffe is already six feet tall and doing great, according to zoo officials. She’s under the care of her mother and the zoo’s caretakers. When she grows up, she’ll be between 1,200-2,500 lbs.

“The international coverage of our patternless baby giraffe has created a much-needed spotlight on giraffe conservation. Wild populations are silently slipping into extinction, with 40% of the wild giraffe population lost in just the last 3 decades,” said Tony Bright, the founder of Brights Zoo.

For the naming contest, the zoo has narrowed it down to four names: Kipekee, which means ‘unique,’ Firyali, defined as ‘unusual or extraordinary,’ Shakiri translates to ‘she is most beautiful,’ or Jamella – ‘one of great beauty.’

Female giraffes usually stay with their mom’s herds, with the parents caring for the babies until they are 12-18 months old. Males will then leave the herd in the wild, and seek a mate.

The zoo describes itself as “a private, family-owned facility nestled in the hills of East Tennessee. Animals living here include some rare & endangered species such as addax, bongo and scimitar-horned oryx, and bactrian camels. The center also contains more common but exotic creatures like red kangaroos, spider monkeys, pandas and zebras.”

The public can vote on a name on the Zoo’s Facebook page, where the keepers have been making announcements and keeping the public posted about their animals, including the new spotless giraffe.

While some experts are saying this spotless giraffe is the only one in the world, a few years ago a Kenyan photographer made headlines when they captured an all-white mom and baby giraffe on camera.

“Elegant and spotless, [the] white mother Giraffe along with her young white calf was spotted in the local area of the Ishaqbini Conservation in Garissa County, Kenya. The two have been attracting attention from across the world,” said a local paper.

Users have responded to the giraffe’s birth with lots of questions and comments on its adorable appearance. “Congratulations on the birth of your new baby giraffe. I know that spots on the giraffe helps to regulate its body temperature but will you need to take any special precautions with this little cutie since she has no spots?” asked one user.

Another said: How precious! One of our favorite Zoos!”

I hope you have enjoyed this post. Have a wonderful day.

Bellevue officer rescues ducklings from storm drain

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Bellevue Police shared video of an officer rescuing ducklings that fell into a storm drain Sunday afternoon.

According to police, a mama duck and her ducklings were marching through Downtown Park, when the little ones slipped through the grating of a storm drain and landed in the muck underground. A bike patrol officer in the neighborhood popped the lid off and started pulling ducks back up to the surface.

The mama duck is seen in the video pacing nervously and quacking while she waits for her kids to come back.

In all, the officer rescued nine ducklings, who police say likely went to the pond to take a much-needed bath!
