ABOUT THE BOOK

Beyond the perilous landscape lies a love that defies extinction. . . .

In the bustling world of paleontology in 1916, Eliza Mills defies societal expectations to pursue her passion. Having published her early groundbreaking papers under a false name, she has finally earned her place at the Carnegie Museum and seizes the opportunity to work at Dinosaur National Monument with a renowned paleontologist. But things in Jensen, Utah, aren’t what they appear. When Eliza gets the chance to dig up bones at a ranch with a dark history, it sparks a chain of events that will rock the very fabric of her carefully constructed world.

Devin Schmitt, Eliza’s closest friend since childhood, harbors unspoken feelings for her but knows he will never be able to win her heart. Just as he vows to give her up for good, Eliza begs him to visit her in Utah for another grand adventure. He reluctantly agrees, and within a few days of his arrival, he and Eliza find themselves entangled in a web of danger where the stakes are much higher than they ever anticipated. Together, Devin and Eliza must hold on to God as their hope as they navigate a treacherous terrain of betrayal to unbury the truth and save Eliza from those who wish to see her fail.

MY THOUGHTS

I am sorry to see this series end, but I enjoyed it so much and learned a lot from it. Being from the Pittsburgh, PA area I am familiar with Carnegie libraries and museum and the many other things that he had a hand in developing.

Our main female character had an unusual interest for the time period, as a paleontologist in 1916, she is used to being discriminated against. With what many think of as an unusual interest for women. This way of thinking only makes her work harder to prove herself. As with today, people also are under the mistaken assumption if you’re a woman of science you cannot have a faith belief.

When she is sent on a dig at the Dinosaur National Monument in Jensen, Uta she is thrilled to have a chance to work with a paleontologist she admires and hopes to learn even more. As dark secrets come to light at the very ranch where the dig is taking place will all her hard work crumble to dust and blow away in the wind?

Feeling lonely she is thrilled to see her childhood best friend, Devin Schmitt has listened to her pleas and come for a visit. Together they are thrown into a dangerous living and working environment, someone doesn’t want them there or things to change.

Is this the time or place for Devin to act upon his feelings for Eliza Mills, though he wants to spend a lifetime of happiness with her. I enjoyed seeing the character development and learning of women of science and paleontology through this series.

None have intrigued him so much as the spirited Miss Peterson. As the two work side by side to unmask her scientific saboteur, Lucy slips ever so sweetly under Thorne’s battered armor, tempting him to abandon old promises.

MY THOUGHTS

The Love Remedy i the first book in the Damsels in Distress series.
In Victorian England a woman is left her father’s apothecary business rather than her siblings together or brother who was convinced he’d inherit it.

For the time period we see strong women playing unconventional roles and excelling at it.
Lucinda Peterson has perfected several medicinal cures including a salve to treat croup. When the formula goes missing, she hires a single father private investigator to investigate its disappearance at what she believes are the hands of her former lover, a rival apothecary.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the apothecary and the natural medicines being formulated. This novel just goes to show women in science doesn’t have to be stuffy and boring, but they can be fun and entertaining. A smart woman is not a bad thing. I loved seeing how single dad Jonathan Thorne breaks down Lucinda’s barriers as she promises to never love again or let anyone into her space.

This historical fiction romance has women in STEM meeting history, mystery, intriguing situations and slow burn romance. This is a woman ahead of her time not afraid to show her love of male dominated subjects at the time including science, and mathematics. This is my first read by the author and I greatly look forward to seeing what else the author has out.

Set in Stone (Treasures of the Earth Book #2): (Christian Historical Romance Book with Adventure and Women in Science)

328 pages Bethany House Publishers March 12,2024 publication date

ABOUT THE BOOK

A dangerous scheme could bury their long-held dreams forever. . . .

From the time she was little, Martha Jankowski has been digging in the dirt, much to the dismay of her mother. Now she dreams of being a paleontologist and is determined to make her parents proud by uncovering the next big discovery. When Martha finds what she hopes to be a fully intact dinosaur skeleton–one that could win her an acclaimed exhibit–she learns another team is competing against her and could steal her chance at being recognized for this momentous discovery.

Paleontology student Jacob Duncan has fulfilled his dream of digging for dinosaur bones at last. In a race against time, he and his team are bent on unearthing a complete skeleton to claim a museum exhibit with their names on it. But when Jacob meets their charming competitor Martha and uncovers foul play within his team, love and danger grow hand in hand until a menacing ruse threatens to destroy it all.

MY THOUGHTS

Set in Stone is the second book in the Treasures of the Earth series though it can easily be read as a standalone. Reading so many books by this author over the years I have gone on so many adventures through the pages of her books and also learned so much.

Taking place in 1872 Colorado territory I really had a feel for the time period with the author’s descriptions. As a youngster Martha wanted nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps of being a paleontologist and when she came of age, she did just though with some limits put on her by her family.

She is determined along with her team to find a whole dinosaur skeleton intact with all the bones unbroken and donate it to the museum for the recognition. Then she learns there is competition from another team determined to do just that.

When sabotages turn dangerous Matha wonders should she stop or keep going? Falling in love with the competition was not supposed to happen but it does. Jacob’s family is not from the upper-class family Matha’s family is from and her mother will not accept her choice.

The faith element is strong and such an encouragement to read especially as a character grows stronger in their faith journey. Full of intrigue, suspense and a pretty surprising reveal this light romance kept me reading.

It was so fascinating learning the ins and outs of a dig, how long it takes, the dangers involved and how careful the have to be to keep the bones intact. I enjoyed seeing the character development and thought it was realistic. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
