The American Wife is the first book in a new series, The Diplomat’s Wife. As I’ve said many times before in my reviews, I love reading books I can learn from this one is a perfect example of this. Incredibly well researched, the time period taking place right before WW II starts. After an American woman, Kitty in Vienna has a whirlwind relationship and marriage to Austrian diplomat Edgar she feels in over her heard in Europe and longs for the comfort of home. A lovely Jewish woman, Judith, her first real friend in Vienna, Austria introduces her to culture and art. I enjoyed being introduced to the cultural aspect of the story. Our main characters Kitty and Edgar are based on facts gathered on many different actual people and rolled into these characters which I found to make such interesting characters. During the Austrian resistance in Vienna many people stood up to the Nazis. “An absolutely heartbreaking, powerful and gripping story about finding love, resilience and friendship in the midst of the darkness of World War 2.” Such a powerful read that will stay with me. I could not put it down.

Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger is a Ukrainian-American who transplanted to Austria.
Born in 1969, she grew up in the culture-rich neighborhood of “Nordeast” Minneapolis and started her writing career with short stories, travel narratives, and worked as a journalist and managing magazine editor, before jumping the desk and pursuing her own writing and traveling.

My Thoughts
The author once again writes about her beloved Germany.
One thing I've noticed while reading this authors books, how impeccably researched they are.
This book is written in the time period preceding and during Hitler's rise to power. His followers were already rabidly devoted.
Set between 1923 and 1938 it follows the rise of Hitler and the Nazis and the escalation of the mistreatment of anyone with even a slight bit of Jewish blood. The Nazis want the women to divorce their Jewish husbands. What ensues is the women refusing and doing whatever it takes to save their men. These are women of bravery who would give up family relationships to stand by their man. Heartbreaking and realistic. A look at history we don't hear much about.
This is the first in the series and I look forward to reading more in this series to see what these brave women do next.

My Thoughts
I just love Ella Carey’s historical fiction books. The author writes with such passion you can tell how well researched the book is as well. Based on some actual people and events and I love how realistic this makes the books she writes. This is a dual timeline book taking place in Paris 1944 and modern times. Modern times, Nicole a young woman ready to start her own family is a happy woman. A shocking discovery about a woman she thought she knew so well has her taken aback. A young woman stares back at her from a black and white photo, the face so familiar, the features so like her own. It’s her grandmother, head shaved, tears in her eyes and branded a traitor. Nicole is shocked and saddened. With the help of a French historian Nicole makes discoveries about her grandmothers’ life when she was younger. As a young woman she is a housemaid at the fancy Ritz Hotel, home to the most powerful Nazis in France. Right under their noses in their hotel a young Allied pilot, that the Nazis are searching for is someone Louise can open up to. As he’s hidden Louise feels just may be able to trust him with a secret. If this trust is misplaced it could mean her life though. Absolutely heartbreaking! This story is just amazing and kept me in its grips. I couldn’t put it down.

Escaping to Warsaw she joins the resistance and opens a cafe as a front while hiding in plain sight hearing all the Germans are saying. When she falls in love with a kind doctor, he goes on the run to avoid going against his beliefs, will she follow? In the face of danger, she shows incredible bravery.
Fraught with danger, and a realistic story line I once again could not put down this book by one of my new favorite historical authors.

My Thoughts
This is very different from any Amish/Mennonite book I have ever read. And right there I applaud this because with so many books out there it’s truly hard to stand out and be an original, but this book succeeds. I have read every Amish book that the author has put out and am very impressed. I have not read her contemporary books yet, but I am looking forward to doing so. This book interestingly enough takes place during two time periods modern times and late 1930’s. Anyone who has read enough of my reviews knows how appreciative I am of a very well researched book that I also learn things from. This book fits those criteria.
2014- Ivy Zimmerman, a young Mennonite woman is adjusting to life without her parents after a fatal car accident. She’s also a carer for her younger sisters’ needs and coping with the strictness of Dawdi and Mammi’s strict rules. She’s also trying to figure out if she feels comfortable continuing her relationship with her boyfriend. To leave behind some stress she is looking forward to an upcoming trip to Germany for an international Mennonite youth gathering.
1930’s Germany- We find out about a family member’s story that happened during WWII. We also read some history of the Anabaptists, their persecution and the things they have gone through during this time period. The German’s quest to find the “perfect people” led to a lot of disgraceful experiments and eugenics. Though this is hard to read about it is an important thing to talk about and not forget. The book has many topics for discussion which adds to its interest. The flow between time periods is an easy transition. We see strong women in both time periods.
There is a revelation of the truth, and it adds a vulnerability to this character which makes the book even more realistic. There are ups and downs and many surprises in this story. I loved this story and kept me reading. My husband also read this story and enjoyed it as much as I did. Make sure to read the author’s notes at the back of the book, informative and interesting.

My Thoughts
I have not read a seafaring voyage book in quite a while and WAITING ON LOVE is the perfect addition to add to my collection. There is just something about reading a book with a setting on the Great Lakes with a young woman and the captain, her father. Nick Clark has to leave home after not bowing to his father’s wishes though he does keep abreast of the family’s going ons through letters back and forth to the family’s housekeeper. After helping Elise Wright when she has an accident on the street Nick is pleased to be hired on as first mate on Elise’s father’s freighter ship, the Mary Elise. This is Elise’s second home; she cooks and cleans for the crew and has been doing so for many years passing up opportunities to become entangled in a romance. The crew respects Elise and her father and wouldn’t dream of trying any funny business with her. When a crew member who is newly hired on tries to put the moves on her and is disrespectful and bad news all around the crew quickly put him in his place. I loved the descriptions of the work the crew did preparing to sail and being on the open water. The descriptions of the strong storms had me holding my breath hoping the ship would survive the peril. A slow burn romance, this is Elise and Nick’s story. He treated her so respectfully. We also spend some time on land and see a heartwarming reunion with Nick and a family member. Nick is fighting his own demons, not able to forgive himself for something that he believes he is responsible for. Will Elise and her strong faith be able to help him with this? I loved the deep faith the main characters have. There is adventure, romance and mystery. I am always happy to read a book by this author, her books are so well researched. She always makes her books so fascinating.

When I first received THE MAID OF BALLYMACOOL I was unable to read it due to prior reading obligations. Now I wish I had chucked those books out the window and gotten right to this one. I absolutely do believe this is the author’s strongest writing yet. You cannot help getting lost in the world she creates. I loved the time I spent at Ballymacool House and Wood and was fascinated to read in the author’s notes that they are still there though Ballmacool is abandoned, roofless and covered in vines. I can’t wait to do more online research on this. Though the story is fictional it is based upon many true events. Just my type of book, very well researched. Brianna Kelly has known no other life than Ballymacool House and Boarding School. Abandoned there as a baby she grew up there and is a maid there. In charge of her is Mistress Maureen Magee, the headmistress of Ballymacool House and Boarding School for Girls. Very mean, she never sees reason from anyone around her. People aren’t born mean so then you say to yourself what happened personally to make her like this? Mistress Magee absolutely hates Brianna with every fiber of her being, but Brianna can remember a time long ago when she was extremely young that she wasn’t like this towards her. As we are reading, we have to try to piece together why she hates this young lady so much. Michael Wray, the son of a local gentry is sent by his parents to the school the corral his young cousin who is a bit pranksterish and outspoken for the school. He is there to keep an eye on her and keep her inline. Upon meeting Brianna, he is drawn to her quiet, shy and reserved way. Something about her feels familiar, have they met before? Brianna spends her free time in the woods surrounding Ballymacool and has a special tree she has been going to for years for relaxation and where she has found treasure. There is in my opinion a gothic feel to the book, a slow burn romance, a headmistress who is hiding something and a mystery just begging to be solved. I could not turn these pages fast enough. There is also a glossary of terms at the back of the book which is very helpful plus the author’s notes that I’d advise because it gives helpful information pertaining to the story. Excellent book!
