Sugar and Salt (Bella Vista Chronicles #4) by Susan Wiggs-Review

About The Book

The New York Times bestselling author of The Lost and Found Bookstore returns to Perdita Street with a can’t-miss tale of friendship, hardship, redemption, and love between a San Francisco baker and a barbecue master from Texas.

Jerome “Sugar” Barnes learned the art of baking in his grandma’s bakery, also called Sugar, on historic Perdita Street in San Francisco. He supplies baked goods to the Lost and Found Bookshop across the street.

When the restaurant that shares his commercial kitchen loses its longtime tenant, a newcomer moves in: Margot Salton, a barbecue master from Texas.

Margot isn’t exactly on the run, but she needs a fresh start. She’s taken care of herself her whole life, pulling herself up by her fingernails to recover from trauma, and her dream has been to open a restaurant somewhere far, far from Texas. The shared kitchen with Jerome Sugar’s bakery is the perfect setup: a state-of-the-art kitchen and a vibrant neighborhood popular with tourists and locals.

Margot instantly takes to Jerome’s grandmother, the lively, opinionated Ida, and the older woman proves to be a good mentor. Margot thinks Jerome is gorgeous, and despite their different backgrounds their attraction is powerful–even though Jerome worries that Margot will simply move on from him once she’s found some peace and stability. But just as she starts to relax into a happy new future, Margot’s past in Texas comes back to haunt her…

My Review

This is my first Susan Wiggs read. Based on the cover I expected it to be a light summery bakery and romance read. Now I know it’s unfair to judge a book by it’s cover and that’s what I did.
What I got when I read this is a whole lot more.
The book is pretty intense, emotional and dramatic if you were to ask me.
It starts off with what we assume is a well to do woman who has worked towards opening her own restaurant her whole life. She is a master chef who was taught the skills years ago as a child by her mother. She was poor growing up but her mother always did her best by her.
She worked hard and it’s opening night at her fancy restaurant, the critics are there and she’s nervous but she’s got this. Until she doesn’t.
It takes us through an emotional back story of the woman. There are many characters and we finally see how they all mesh together.
She has a chance at real love for the first time but she’s so afraid to share her past experiences with him. Will he give her a chance if her past is told?
There are some very intense parts that may cause some to stop reading. I am wondering if all her books are like this? Overall in the face of adversity our main character had to make some very hard and life changing decisions. Very much an eye opening book. The characters are very well written and realistic.
Tasty recipes also included.

Expected publication: July 26th 2022
I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

About The Author

I like to believe I am the person my dogs think I am.

I phone my parents every day, as they are elderly and adorable, and they read me stories every day of my freakishly normal childhood. I was a writer before I learned to read, by creating scribbles on paper and dictating the stories to my saintly mother. You can see examples here: https://plus.google.com/u/1/photos/104585203815605467940/albums/5587379107269629729?banner=pwa&partnerid=pwrd1.

Untold eons later, I still read and write everyday and I’ve gotten very good at it. I live in a ridiculously gorgeous place in the world–an island in Puget Sound, Washington where we have a lot of the same flowers you grow in the UK. But bigger slugs. Much bigger slugs.

I have lots more to tell you, so please join me on Facebook and check out pictures of my dogs and tell me what’s on your mind. https://www.facebook.com/susanwiggs

Can’t Wait Wednesday-Within These Gilded Halls

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine

I have not read any books by this author yet but they sound very intriguing so I can’t wait to give them a try.

About The Book

Hidden treasure and betrayal mingle with unexpected love within the walls of Avonthorpe Hall.

After studying art under Miss Drake, a renowned painter, Phoebe Radcliff is certain she can finally move beyond the childish mistake that’s kept her away from home. She is thrilled when Miss Drake employs her to complete a complicated ballroom renovation.

Everything changes, however, the moment Miss Drake is murdered. With her last breath she imparts the location of a clue to Phoebe. Can the biggest secret of Avonthorpe Hall be true—the rumored treasure real? Phoebe is tasked to finish her work in the ballroom by Miss Drake’s infuriatingly regimented yet all-too-handsome nephew, Lt. Graham Burke. Determined to fulfill the promise she made to her beloved teacher to find the treasure, Phoebe also works to uncover the truth about Miss Drake’s death—and she must do so before Lt. Burke leases the house.

But dark shadows line the gilded halls of Avonthorpe, and soon enough Phoebe realizes she’s not the only person who knows about the clues. What’s worse, she needs Lt. Burke’s help to stay ahead of whoever is hard on her heels. If only she weren’t so attracted to him.

Caught up in a deadly race for answers, Phoebe must find a way to breach the shroud of lies that surrounds every last resident in the house and, more importantly, face a past she’s been running away from for far too long.

The push-and-pull between two very different worlds begins as one seeks simple friendship and the other struggles to trust. And can it—dare they—allow it to be more?

Sparks fly between Mushaniq, free-spirited daughter of Manteo, and Georgie Howe, whose father was brutally murdered by undiscovered native warriors before they’d been on Roanoac Island a full week. As Georgie struggles to make sense of his life and to accept that not all they call “savage” are guilty of his father’s death, Mushaniq grapples with her own questions about who Manteo has become. As tentative friendship becomes more, forged in the fire of calamity and attack upon their community, both must decide whether the One True God is indeed who He claims to be and whether He is worthy of their trust.

The Deadly Shallows (Coastal Guardians #3)by Dani Pettrey-Review

About The Book

A deadly attack.
A stolen weapon capable of immense destruction.
A painful secret that threatens to tear two hearts apart.

CGIS Agent Noah Rowley is rocked to the core when several of his valued team members come under fire on his Coast Guard base. He and his remaining team race to the scene and end the attack, but not before innocent lives are lost. Furious and grief-stricken, he vows to do whatever is needed to bring the mastermind behind the attack to justice.

Stunned by the ambush, Coast Guard flight medic Brooke Kesler evacuates in a helicopter carrying the only surviving gunman. The gravely wounded man whispers mysterious information to Brooke that immediately paints a target on her back.

As Brooke and Noah race to uncover answers, emotions between them ignite. Noah struggles to protect Brooke at all costs and to conceal the secret that prevents him from becoming what he longs to be–the right man for her.

Everything is at stake as a horrifying truth emerges. . . .

The attack wasn’t the end game. It was only the beginning.

“This action-packed thriller is sure to please.”–
IRENE HANNON, bestselling and award-winning author

“I love Dani’s writing, and The Deadly Shallows is one of her best! Tightly written and dripping with tension. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.”–CARRIE STUART PARKS, bestselling and award-winning author of Relative Silence

My Review

The author’s books are always non stop action and this one is no different. Action that captivates you from the first pages hooks your attention. You won’t be able to stop reading because once you start reading you’ll need to have all your questions answered.
A mass shooting has the first responders including CGIS Agent Noah Rowley and his team and Coast Guard flight medic Brooke Kesler on high alert.
A mysterious message given to medic Brooke by the only surviving gunman has her questioning it’s importance. Was he even coherent when he spoke to her?
This fast paced thriller will have you questioning who ordered the shooting and why?
I enjoyed seeing the interaction between Noah and Brooke they have a comfort level with each other that has built up from previous books but will sparks be able to fly as he does everything he possibly can to protect her while keeping a secret from her that may change the whole scope of things if she’d find out what it was.
The attack wasn’t the end game. It was only the beginning.
Sure to please you won’t be able to stop til you’ve read it all the way through.

A New York Secret (Daughters of New York #1)by Ella Carey-Review

About The Book

From top-ten bestseller Ella Carey comes a stunning Second World War novel. The glitter, glamor and danger of 1940s New York collide in this dazzling story about a young woman striving to survive in a world where everything is set against her.

War forces her to choose a side…

1942, New York. As war rages in Europe, Lily Rose is grateful for her perfect life: a wealthy family who love her and a dream job working uptown as a restaurant chef. Times are changing for women and Lily is determined to run her own kitchen one day. She hopes handsome Tom Morelli, son of Sicilian immigrants, will be at her side. Together they work late, dreaming up delicious meals for New Yorkers struggling with wartime rationing and the threat of sons and sweethearts being called up…

Then Tom receives a devastating telegram that changes everything: he is drafted to fight in Italy.

Suddenly alone, Lily turns to her parents for support. But when her mother finds out about Tom, she is furious. When the war ends, Lily’s duty is to marry the man picked for her, keep house and raise children. They give her a heartbreaking ultimatum: end her relationship with Tom or lose her family and inheritance forever.

In the middle of the war, Lily is left in an impossible position. Will she choose to stay with her family and live the safe life she has always known, or will she follow her heart and her dreams?

An emotional and utterly unputdownable novel, inspired by true events, about the courage, love and friendships that will see you through war and tragedy. Fans of Fiona Davis, Rhys Bowen and The Nightingale will be captivated.

My Review

I absolutely LOVE Ella Carey’s books, they are so realistic that you’re guaranteed to feel as though you’re there experiencing it along with all the characters. This is set during WWII in New York. Lily Rose comes from a wealthy background, her mother is all about class, status and caring about what everyone thinks. It’s an embarrassment to her that her daughter works. Lily is a modern woman though and is in the running to be the head chef at a prestigious restaurant. Her mother has her daughter’s life planned out down to who she will marry.
When the man Lily loves leaves for war it is a tumultuous time with her mother making her life unbearable, not knowing if she’ll get the job and having her country at war.
She finds comfort in her visits with her understanding grandmother.
I did not want this book to end, it was just that good. Heartbreaking and heartwarming both you’ll be anxiously waiting with Lily for beau to come home from the war but then tragedy strikes.
There is a lot of anticipation here. I will be reading the rest of this series.

In Royal Service To The Queen by Tessa Arlen-Review

About The Book

“Engrossing. Fans of The Crown will devour this.”–Publishers Weekly

The revealing story of Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved governess, Marion Crawford, who spent more than sixteen years of her life in loyal service to the royal family and was later shunned by those she has loved and served.

Marion Crawford can remember each of the wonderful years when she was governess to the little Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose: included in their lives, confided in, needed, trusted, and loved. These memories will never dim, ever. In Marion’s mind, she will always be their Crawfie.

But things become increasingly complicated as the young royals navigate adulthood. It is May 1945 and Princess Elizabeth–the heiress presumptive to the British throne–has fallen in love, and the only member of her family who is happy for her is her governess. No one in the young princess’s life thinks that Prince Philip of Greece would be a suitable husband for the future Queen of England. No one that is, except for Marion Crawford.

Crawfie wholeheartedly supports Elizabeth in her determination to marry Philip. She too has fallen in love–and has convinced her fianc, George, that they must wait for Elizabeth and Philip to receive the King’s blessingbefore she can leave her service to the Crown.

Over the next two years Crawfie is caught between loyalty to Princess Elizabeth; running the risk of alienating her royal employer, Queen Elizabeth; and losing the man she loves. But as Crawfie prevails to marry George and stands with him in Westminster Abbey on Elizabeth and Philip’s wedding day, she is unaware that her troubled relationship with Queen Elizabeth is far from over. And just around the corner is a betrayal that will sever her bond with the royal family forever.

My Review

Engrossing book. Though being an American I don’t closely follow the Royal family I always appreciate a well researched book.
This is a fictionalized story told by the governess of the queen-to-be, Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret Rose. It tells of their formative years as girls and follows them through school, home life, meeting Phillip, heartaches and happiness. Though it may sound like a glamorous life the governess gave up having the privacy of her own life. She also, much to the dismay of the man who loved her postponed marriage for a good many years to serve this family.
The author’s writing style comes off strong and very thoroughly researched.
