Bookouture Blog Tour for The Forgotten Children by Ann Bennett

About The Book

Paris, 1941. As we drive down the cobbled street, I take in the red banners with swastikas covering every building. Suddenly a group of guards appears. I duck beneath the window of the car, and my heart thumps as my hand jumps to my chest. But I’m not wearing my yellow star now, I left it with my sister. Tears well in my eyes. Will I ever see her again?

1939. Standing in front of the orphanage’s imposing stone walls, eleven-year-old Jewish twins Helga and Ruth shiver with fear. The war has taken their mother and father, their home in Berlin has been turned to rubble, but their soft, dark eyes meet and Helga gives Ruth a reassuring smile. They should be safe here together.

Yet every day bombs fly overhead. And when Ruth becomes desperately unwell, the girls are torn apart. As war rages on, will they ever find each other?

Paris, 1990. When Naomi moves to Paris, she hopes the city will help her find herself again. But whilst exploring the antique markets in the early morning sun, she is shocked to discover a duplicate of a photograph her mother Helga has on her mantelpiece back in London of a magnificent vine-covered villa on the outskirts of the city. Naomi soon discovers it was used as an orphanage during the Second World War. But why was the photo so precious to her mother?

When Naomi tells her mother what she’s found, Helga is furious. She begs Naomi to leave the orphanage alone. But Naomi is already desperate to discover the truth about her mother and the secrets of the other forgotten children of Montmorency. If Naomi learns the heart-shattering mistake her mother made, it will change their lives forever. But if she leaves the secrets in the past, Helga will never find out what happened to her sister…

Breathtaking and unputdownable, this story is about courage, hope and the resilience of the human spirit, perfect for fans of Before We Were Yours, Sold on a Monday and The Orphan’s Tale.

My Thoughts

The Forgotten Children by Ann Bennett captivated me as I read it. It is a gripping and heartbreaking story. Such an excellent story! Swirled amongst the dual timeline you'll find a historical fiction story filled with sadness as you feel empathy for our young Helga in the earlier timeline. A very trying, scary and confusing time for a young person to have to experience during the war.

Due to circumstances she had to move around a lot and didn't have the security of a good home environment.
In a later time frame, we meet her daughter, who would really love to know about her mother's past and her experiences. Helga, due to her tragedies will not share her story with her daughter and it's causing such a tension in their relationship.

Many secrets are being kept; can this mother daughter bond be broken by omission of truths? I very much enjoyed reading Helga's backstory, it's so tragic but yet I could see why she wanted this kept secret and to not bring it to mind again. We get a harsh insight into the darker side of war and how it affected the innocent children. Will her daughter make a breakthrough with her mother?

The ending was superb, the light shines through in such a beautiful way! I loved this book!

Bookouture Blog Tour for The Bedroom Window by K.L. Slater

About The Book

They say they have no children. So who did I see at the window?

My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together.

But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children, so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to? And why can I hear a lullaby drifting across the garden when I’m tucking my own boy into bed?

Then, one night, I see a small shadowy figure in their bedroom window…

I thought I’d learned my lesson about trusting the wrong people, but now I’m forced to wonder what this perfect couple are hiding.

And if I try to save that little helpless figure in the window, will I do what I’ve always feared most, and put my beautiful boy’s life in danger…?

An utterly gripping psychological thriller from the number one bestselling author of The Marriage and The Girlfriend. If you like Gone Girl, The Housemaid and Lisa Jewell then you will be hooked by The Bedroom Window.

My Thoughts

Starting over in a new place and home is never an easy task. So much to keep you occupied, unpacking and meeting the neighbors. She’s such a busy mom but when her son tells her about the wonderful neighbors he’s met, especially the woman, she’s thrilled. She’s like a second mom to him, treating him kindly, talking to him and thy even bake cookies together. Who wouldn’t want neighbors like that?

They say, “If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.” And in this case, it’s true. This psychological thriller, had me thinking along the lines of all is well and harmonious but in the back of your mind you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, then it does.

My thinking immediately went off kilter and to a whole new way of thinking as I was on high alert and just had to see how it would play out. Once I started reading The Bedroom Window, I didn’t want to stop. The author brilliantly grabs your thought process and you’re thinking one way and then immediately need to shift gears into high alert. The book took me on a roller coaster ride, and I loved the thrill of it!

‘Save her,’ she begs, drawing her last, quavering breaths. ‘Save my baby. Find her father. And reunite them.’ Both of our tears fall on the tiny creature in my arms, only minutes old and already in terrible danger. There’s never any doubt – of course I’ll do all I can. But will it be enough?

Auschwitz, January 1945: forced on a terrifying death march from the notorious concentration camp, midwife and former secret agent Maggie must find the strength to protect the tiny baby girl her dying friend left to her care. Only weeks old, little Leah is in terrible danger – from the Nazis, from the freezing weather, from starvation.

So when a company of soldiers led by brave Captain Jamie Maclean rescues the marching women, Maggie’s relief knows no bounds. But it soon turns to astonishment when Jamie vows to help Maggie reunite Leah with her father – he has fallen in love with Maggie, and will do everything in his power to assist her.

Maggie can’t yet trust her own, budding, feelings. But she accepts Jamie’s help, and slowly starts to dream of a life together. Until Maggie gets the news every survivor dreads. The most fearsome Nazi of all, Dr Mengele, the terror of Auschwitz, has escaped – and she may be the only person strong enough to track him down.

Looking at baby Leah’s trusting eyes, Maggie’s heart is torn. But she has to find Mengele and bring him to justice. Can she succeed on the most terrifying mission of her life, when so many others have failed? And if she does, will she find her way back home to the ones she loves, or will the heartbreak of everything she has suffered destroy any chance of happiness, forever?

My Thoughts

Having read Paris at First Light, the book right before this one in the WWII Resistance series I knew this book would be hard to get through. Yes, it was not an easy read, how could humans be so brutally cruel to each other without even seeming to care how it affected the ones on the receiving end. But more importantly this book is so important to read because despite its dark happenings it is a beacon of light. For in each situation there is hope. The characters display incredible bravery, and you see this displayed time and time again during war and tragedies. People going out of their way despite the incredible danger they may be putting themselves in they are right here doing all they can to help.
I highly recommend this book.

Bookouture Blog tour for Summer at the Cornish Beach Cafe by Donna Ashcroft

My Thoughts

Such a heartwarming book. I loved settling into the pages of its setting in Indigo Cove with it’s pristine waters, endless sand and characters you’d love to have tea with.
Nursing a broken heart after a breakup from a man who thought he was God’s gift to women Jessie needs to heal. She just knows that a family trip with Grandpa while he recreates loving memories of past wonderful times with his wife are sure to do it.

Throw in cream cakes and lemonade from the Cornish Beach Cafe and what more could you need. Past memories have never left of the first boy she fell for and kissed; how could it be possible she runs into him here? As she gets to know him again, she falls for him and it seems as though he feels the same way but when a serious secret from his past surfaces, will it drawn them together or make them go their separate ways?

So much has changed with them both in the years that have separated them. He is now a successful businessman; she was engaged to be married but is still shy and reserved. Can they let their inhibitions down around each other in this sunny paradise?

Such a lighthearted feel-good book, the perfect vacation bring along book. Emotional, with the importance of being yourself and accepting others for who they are. The ending was so fabulous!

323 pages publish date May 9, 2023 publisher Northern Lights Press

About The Book

When the darkness closes all around,
Beauty is still there just waiting to be found.

Dawson Huxham blames himself for his sister’s death . . . until he briefly crosses time and discovers she’s alive in the Middle Ages. Hoping to reconnect with her, he searches for the holy water that will help him visit the past for a longer duration. But he realizes he’s not the only one looking for the miraculous water. Terrorists are threatening him and watching his every move.

As Dawson locates holy water from an unlikely source, he crosses fully into the past where he meets a beautiful noblewoman, Philippa Neville, who is desperately trying to escape her uncle’s plans for an arranged marriage. When danger closes in, Dawson agrees to wed her in an effort to thwart her uncle’s schemes. As forces in both the present and past conspire against the newlyweds, will they find a way to be together before the swiftly moving waters of time separate them forever?

My Thoughts

I am not a reader of time travel book but for Jody Hedlund’s books I am.
The Waters in Time books are just incredible, and she has proven her books are equally well written in whatever genre she writes in.

Though this book can be read as a standalone I do suggest you read the books in order.
This series has captivated me from the start, and I have loved all in this series.
I found it fascinating to be transported back in time to the Medieval times and read the differences yet similarities in the time periods.

I enjoyed reading Dawson’s story and seeing the positive change in his personality.
The story has a nice Christian addition without it being too much.
The book has a fabulous outcome that I enjoyed and is positive. I’m looking forward to more well researched books in this series.

The Long March Home: A World War II Novel of the Pacific by Tosca Lee and Marcus Brotherton

397 pages Revell publisher publication date May 2,2023

About the Book

Jimmy Propfield joined the army for two reasons: to get out of Mobile, Alabama, with his best friends Hank and Billy and to forget his high school sweetheart, Claire.

Inspired by true stories, The Long March Home is a gripping coming-of-age tale of friendship, sacrifice, and the power of unrelenting hope.

My Thoughts

The Long March Home is raw, gritty and very realistic. The thing I appreciated is it’s based on true events. Very well researched, I learned a lot and I have read many WWII books so that’s saying something.

Childhood friends from Mobile, Alabama have no idea what they will be facing once they enlist. The Philippines where they’re sent is a world away from Mobile and a whole new culture and many different experiences. Vowing to stick together, always the teens enjoy themselves training waiting for the war to come.

I had not heard of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines or how the Japanese immediately invade the country after bombing Pearl Harbor. The teens are not prepared for the realities of war, the death, the daily struggle for survival with little to eat, standing guard not knowing who’s going to be sneaking up on you.

They are all determined to come back home alive to their loved ones who are desperately waiting for mail and any word of how they’re doing.
Full of hope and determination The Long March Home is a very powerful read. Highly recommended!

My husband is keeping secrets. I’m watching his every move…

Jake and I were childhood sweethearts. Strong, dependable and with a smile that melts my heart, he is the perfect husband and father to our beautiful little daughter. We have our money troubles – but getting a lodger, Kara, calms the panic I feel about our bills. Jake is reluctant but what choice do we have?

I’m relieved that Kara is so sweet, playing endless games of hide and seek with Elsie and settling into our home. But when I catch Jake and Kara sitting close together on the sofa one evening, they jump apart when I walk into the room. Jake promises it’s nothing…

When I search Kara’s room, I know for sure. My husband is keeping a terrible secret. And it’s much, much worse than I imagined.

Confronting him will tear our marriage apart, but I’ll do anything to protect my precious daughter.

Even if it means putting on a smile as I greet Kara at the breakfast table.

Even if it means lying to my husband’s face.

Even if it means someone has to die…

For fans of The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl and The Housemaid, this is a psychological thriller with a mind-blowing twist you’ll never see coming.

My Thoughts

The thing I love about psychological thrillers is you never know what to expect. I could hardly put this down. It’s incredible. I thought I had things pretty well figured out with the characters, then it hits you…………. A totally unexpected character change. Did I really have the character’s psyche figured out? I think not! I had to go back and reread some of this to connect the characters behavior in the past with the present. Totally unexpected ending. WOW! I just didn’t see this coming. I just love books like this that keep me on my toes.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

All opinions expressed are my own.
