My first computer was very small and didn’t have a good connection to the Internet. I didn’t really know what I was doing online. I’ve come a long way now with my computer usage and know so much more.

My first computer was one of the earliest Apples, so 1979 or 80. No internet at that time, of course. An undergrad wrote me a word processing program so I could write my grants. When I came to UNC, I was the only faculty member with a PC. Ony typists in the departmental office, who still had to re-type my grants because the only printer I could get was one that used the paper with the punches on the side. The one departmental computer took up most of a whole room!
Oh man, we’ve sure come a long way with technology haven’t we? I’ll bet at the time it really felt like something.
We definitely have. I was the first person to organize an international meeting via the internet and to run a university-wide survey by internet. Then the rest of the world caught up! I had a very forward looking mentor, who introduced us all to computers.
That’s impressive!
It didn’t seem so at the time – just me trying to do something timely!
