About The Book
In 1870, orphaned Daisy François takes a position as housemaid at a Wisconsin castle to escape the horrors of her past life. There she finds a reclusive and eccentric Gothic authoress who hides tales more harrowing than the ones in her novels. As women disappear from the area and the eerie circumstances seem to parallel a local legend, Daisy is thrust into a web that could ultimately steal her sanity, if not her life.
In the present day, Cleo Clemmons is hired by the grandson of an American aristocratic family to help his grandmother face her hoarding in the dilapidated Castle Moreau. But when Cleo uncovers more than just the woman’s stash of collectibles, a century-old mystery and the dust of the old castle’s curse threaten to rise again . . . this time to leave no one alive to tell the sordid tale.
Award-winning author Jaime Jo Wright seamlessly weaves a dual-time tale of two women who must do all they can to seek the light amid the darkness shrouding Castle Moreau.
My Thoughts
This book kept me glued to it all afternoon. I wasn’t even aware of time passing and read it in one day! Incredibly atmospheric and creepy. The author definitely knows how to set up the story and keep your attention the whole way through. You keep reading and won’t want to miss a single word. There are several time frames here, they have similar stories, the women, but yet different. The women live in Castle Moreau. There are dreadful rumors, mysterious events that they must try to figure out. They feel as though they are losing their sanity as they start to doubt themselves and what they know. What secrets will be uncovered within the dust and despair of Castle Monteau? I was totally captivated and could not put this down.
Pub Date: 4 Apr 2023 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Jaime Jo Wright, multi award-winning author–including the Christy and Daphne du Maurier awards–is a coffee-fueled and cat-fancier extraordinaire. She has entwined her life with the legendary Captain Hook, residing serenely in Wisconsin’s rural woodlands. Her literary vocation involves penning chilling Gothic tales, a baffling change from that of Austenites, with a strong preference to the master of dark, Edgar Allan Poe. Two mischievous urchins adorn their family, who keep their mother on her toes – providing an exhilarating amount chaos.

I glance over at Lou’s house as I pull onto my drive, surprised that it is still in darkness. Lou and the kids should have been home from school long ago. I should be preparing a delicious meal for my children as they tell me about their day. But Lou’s car is nowhere to be seen…
The night is drawing in and Lou has still not returned. I try not to panic, but deep down I know something is wrong. Lou is the most dependable friend. Our children are at the same school. We always help each other out, and she cares for my two like only a mother can.
As a storm rages outside and local news reports tell everyone to stay indoors, a feeling of deep dread starts to swell. Then the call comes. The police have found Lou’s car, with my children’s schoolbags still inside along with Lou’s phone. But they are nowhere to be seen.
Clutching my husband’s hands, willing our children to be found safe and sound, I try to silence the voice inside my head. I’ve not been honest. I’m being punished for what happened all those years ago.
And then I get Lou’s message and I know that if I want to see my children again, I need to tell the truth to everyone I love.
What I don’t yet know is that Lou has been keeping her own dark secret. And once the storm passes, nothing will ever be the same again.

My Review
I am always willing to give new to me authors a try. This is how I discover some pretty good books. Late one cold winter’s night a most dreadful thing happens to a man’s family, his two daughters and wife are stabbed violently, two fatally. Now pretty early on the detectives working this case are able to figure out who the suspect is. There are more victims though, is there are connection between the victims or are they just randomly chosen by the suspect? The LEO’s are hard at work trying to determine the answer to this. I saw one of the characters in the book is an Officer Patterson and my oldest son is Officer Patterson so thought that was pretty neat. We are so proud of him. The book has a very well thought out plot that is fast moving. I enjoyed getting into the thought process of the detectives as they try to stay one step ahead of the suspect and his targeted victims. I stayed up late reading this one, I really just could not put it down. Well done, I’ll look forward to reading future books by this author.
