The Cartographer’s Secret Review

The Cartographer’s Secret Author Tea Cooper Publication November 16,2021 by Harper Muse Paperback 400 pages

Amazon Buy Link Here

My Review

With the author living in Australia you get a true authenticity to her stories as opposed to others who write about an area they have researched but have never stepped foot in.
The descriptions and setting of the story were well received, I truly feel as though I have visited this majestic area through this book.
The dual time line has us spending time in The Hunter Valley, 1880 with Evie Ludgrove and thirty years later when Letitia Rawlings arrives at the family estate in her Ford Model T to inform her great-aunt Olivia of a loss in their family.
We find out Evie, who grew up seeing her father’s obsession with Australian explorer Dr. Ludwig Leichhardt had set out thirty years ago to prove how Leichhardt met his end and in doing so would claim a substantial reward.
Evie is an excellent artist and charts everything in her maps. She is determined to prove her theory correct and will take her father’s papers with her as well.
This book is completely spellbinding as I could not stop reading it.
I had to see if Letitia who finds a beautifully illustrated map would have any luck with this family’s unsolved mystery of thirty years. The closer you get to the truth the more dangerous it may become and not all is as it seems.
I absolutely could not put this spellbinding book down!

GoodReads Synopsis

A map into the past. A long-lost young woman. And a thirty-year family mystery.

The Hunter Valley, 1880. Evie Ludgrove loves to chart the landscape around her home—hardly surprising since she grew up in the shadow of her father’s obsession with the great Australian explorer Dr. Ludwig Leichhardt. So when an advertisement appears in The Bulletin magazine offering a thousand-pound reward for proof of where Leichhardt met his fate, Evie is determined to use her father’s papers to unravel the secret. But when Evie sets out to prove her theory, she vanishes without a trace, leaving behind a mystery that haunts her family for thirty years.

Letitia Rawlings arrives at the family estate in her Ford Model T to inform her great-aunt Olivia of a loss in their family. But Letitia is also escaping her own problems—her brother’s sudden death, her mother’s scheming, and her dissatisfaction with the life planned out for her. So when Letitia discovers a beautifully illustrated map that might hold a clue to the fate of her missing aunt, Evie Ludgrove, she sets out to discover the truth. But all is not as it seems, and Letitia begins to realize that solving the mystery of her family’s past could offer as much peril as redemption.

A gripping historical mystery for fans of Kate Morton and Natasha Lester’s The Paris SeamstressThe Cartographer’s Secret follows a young woman’s quest to heal a family rift as she becomes entangled in one of Australia’s greatest historical puzzles.

“A galvanizing, immersive adventure . . . forcing the characters to reckon with the choice found at the crux of passion and loyalty and the power of shared blood that can either destroy or heal.” —Joy Callaway, international bestselling author of The Fifth Avenue Artists Society

A Season On The Wind Review

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Fleming H Revell Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 320 pages Publish date October 5, 2021 Author Suzanne Woods Fisher Amazon Buy Link

My Review

I was so excited to see another book by Suzanne Woods Fisher set in Stoney Ridge. I’ve read all the others and loved them and was looking forward to another one.
This is an exciting Amish book series.
The characters are realistic and flawed just like we all are. I know I enjoy reading about characters who I can relate to, which I easily can in this book.
This is a bit different than her usual books. It has a lot of information about birds, which I have learned a lot about.Even non-birders can understand.
I also enjoyed seeing the birding logs in each chapter.
We have several themes going here with forgiveness a strong one.
I always enjoy this author’s books and this one is excellent.

GoodReads Synopsis

Ben Zook had only two loves in his life: books and birds. In a stroke of good fortune, he’d stumbled onto a way to cobble together those two loves into a career, writing books about rare birds. He was as free as a bird–until a chase for a rare White-winged Tern takes him to the one place on earth he planned to never return: his Amish home in Stoney Ridge.

Desperate for photographs of the elusive tern, Ben hires a local field guide, Micah Weaver, and boards at Micah’s farm, planning to “bag the bird” and leave Stoney Ridge before anyone recognizes him. But he neglected to plan for Micah’s sister, Penny. One long-ago summer, Penny had introduced Ben to birding, even sharing with him a hidden eagle aerie. That eagle became his spark bird–the one that inspired his lifelong love.

Ben. He was Penny’s spark bird. That was when she knew true love. She’d always hoped Ben would come back to Stoney Ridge. Back to his Amish roots. Back to her. The only problem? Ben has absolutely no memory of Penny.

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher welcomes her readers to the Amish community at Stoney Ridge in this engaging story of discovering just who the rare birds are in life.

Behind Love’s Wall, as many of her other books are has most of it’s setting on Mackinac Island from 1895 to 2020 in this dual time-line novella. I enjoyed reading this as it revisited many of her past books through characters that show up in this book.

Synopsis From GoodReads

Maine innkeeper Holly White returns to sleuth another seasonal slaying in the third Christmas Tree Farm mystery from bestselling author Jacqueline Frost.

Reindeer Games Christmas Tree Farm is going into the B&B business, and Holly White is looking forward to her new role as innkeeper. Even better, Mistletoe, Maine’s sheriff, Evan Gray, has deputized his little sister Libby to help Holly wrap presents for Mistletoe’s toy drive. But a cold wind ruffles the cheery holiday decorations when a new guest checks in: Karen, a vicious B&B critic, who could make or break the new inn. And the short December days turn even darker when Evan and Libby find Karen’s dead body in the gift-wrapped toy donation box.

The suspect list is longer than Santa’s naughty list, and local resident Cookie is on it, since her fingerprints are all over the murder weapon, a metal nutcracker that she gave to Holly. So is Libby, who recently moved to town from Boston in less-than-savory circumstances. But cranky Karen was an oh-holy-nightmare to lots of the townsfolk, such as Evan’s reporter friend Ray; Christopher, the inn’s former contractor; and confectioner Bonnie, whose Gum Drop Shop was a direct target of Karen’s scathing prose.

To figure out the killer’s identity and clear Cookie’s name, Holly and her friends brainstorm at The Hearth, the farm’s café, while her mother keeps them fueled with Christmas goodies fresh from the oven. But if they can’t put the culprit on ice, Holly may never see another Christmas.

The Heart Of A Cowboy Review

Pub Date 05 Oct 2021 Bethany House Publishers Paperback, 384 pages

My Review

I am really enjoying the Colorado Cowboys series!
Because of her unconventional upbringing Linnea Newberry doesn’t feel like anything should be off limits to her including doing things typically limited to males in her time period.
She is thrilled to be on the trip of a lifetime. Traveling with her grandfather, she is an extremely brilliant botanist studying all the flora she comes across. Though not taken seriously except by her grandfather she is out to prove not only her intelligence in her chosen field but she’ll prove she can keep up with the men and not fall behind or get hurt on this trip on Santa Fe Trail.
Oops, she hasn’t counted on the mishaps that have put her life in danger a few times and in doing so holding the trip up. Unknown to her, her grandfather hires a man to keep her safe on the trip so she can continue on with the expedition. Flynn McQuaid is the man for the job, this cowboy is delivering cattle to his older brother and there’s the task of caring for his younger siblings. Can he manage the added responsibility of being Linnea’s bodyguard as well? Who will guard Flynn from himself whenever he starts falling for his charge though?
Flynn and Linnea both have secrets that could have pretty strong repercussions if not handled the right way. Such a beautiful story about acceptance, trust, repentance, faith, understanding and love.
The author has done it again! This is an absolute must read author for me!

Ethel Rosenberg An American Tragedy

Pub Date 08 Jun 2021 St. Martin’s Press Hardcover, 320 pages Anne Sebba

My Review

This is a nonfiction book and by the way it’s presented we can tell Ethel Rosenberg’s life has been meticulously researched by author Anne Sebba.
In June 1953, married couple Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who had two young sons were led separately from their cells on death row and electrocuted just moments apart. As they were being led to the chair they did not cry out or fight it they went calmly.
We see Ethel’s life as it unfolds for her as a child and teen and feel the coldness of her mother’s betrayal and rejection. She didn’t want her. One thing was very clear, how much Ethel adored her children. It was interesting reading the details of her trial for espionage-related crimes, of which I didn’t see any hard evidence presented. Because of deep love for her husband Julius, she refused to say anything negative against him in court essentially courageously facing the death penalty which left her children orphans after her execution.
Eyeopening tragedy!

GoodReads Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Anne Sebba’s moving biography of Ethel Rosenberg, the wife and mother whose execution for espionage-related crimes defined the Cold War and horrified the world.

In June 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, a couple with two young sons, were led separately from their prison cells on Death Row and electrocuted moments apart. Both had been convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage for the Soviet Union, despite the fact that the US government was aware that the evidence against Ethel was shaky at best and based on the perjury of her own brother.

This book is the first to focus on one half of that couple for more than thirty years, and much new evidence has surfaced since then. Ethel was a bright girl who might have fulfilled her personal dream of becoming an opera singer, but instead found herself struggling with the social mores of the 1950’s. She longed to be a good wife and perfect mother, while battling the political paranoia of the McCarthy era, anti-Semitism, misogyny, and a mother who never valued her. Because of her profound love for and loyalty to her husband, she refused to incriminate him, despite government pressure on her to do so. Instead, she courageously faced the death penalty for a crime she hadn’t committed, orphaning her children.

Seventy years after her trial, this is the first time Ethel’s story has been told with the full use of the dramatic and tragic prison letters she exchanged with her husband, her lawyer and her psychotherapist over a three-year period, two of them in solitary confinement. Hers is the resonant story of what happens when a government motivated by fear tramples on the rights of its citizens.
