A Plus One For Murder (Friend For Hire Mystery #1)

Amazon Buy Link

My Review

A Plus One for Murder is the first book in a new series, A Friend for Hire.
I really enjoyed it a lot and though I’ve read other books by this author I think this may be my favorite so far.
Entrepreneur Emma Westlake runs a travel agency scheduling client’s dream vacations until that venture goes belly up.
Talking to her elderly lunchtime teatime companion Dottie, who is a real firecracker she laments about needing money and how business has dried up. Never one to let the grass grow under her feet Dottie suggests a plan and even sets up her first clients for her. This is how A Friend For Hire comes into being.
I really enjoyed her Client “Big Max” he’s trying to impress a certain lady and just “knows” if he takes Emma around this lady that she will see what a catch he is and want to date him.
The trouble is when one of her clients drops dead at an open mic night that she is attending the trouble starts. We get clues along the way and I was sure Emma and her wonderful dog Scout had solved the case along with Super Sleuth Dottie who loves reading her cozy mysteries.
Well received mystery and I look forward to reading more in this series soon.

GoodReads Synopsis

Entrepreneur Emma Westlake is reinventing herself as a hired friend when murder gets in the way in this exciting new mystery series from USA Today bestselling author Laura Bradford.

Emma Westlake has always wanted to be in business for herself. As a kid, she had her own successful lemonade stand and dog-walking business. And when she entered adulthood, Emma sunk all her cash into her dream job of travel planning. But as her customers became more and more internet savvy, the need for her services declined. At a loss for what to do next, she turns to an elderly friend who suggests she try to get paid for doing something she’s really good at–being a paid companion. Emma thinks it’s a crazy idea until requests start pouring in. Big Max from down the block wants her to act as his wingman at the local senior center’s upcoming dance, nurse practitioner Stephanie needs a workout partner, and writer Brian Hill asks Emma to be his cheering section at an open mic night.

Brian will be reading from his latest work and wants to know someone will clap for him when he’s done. When Emma balks at the notion that people wouldn’t, he tells her the room will be filled with people he’s invited–most of whom will likely want him dead by the time he’s done reading. Assuming he’s joking, she laughs. But when Brian steps up to the mic and clears his throat to speak, he promptly drops dead. Emma is one of the last people to see him alive, and so she becomes an immediate suspect. Now she’ll have to cozy up to a killer to save her skin and her new business.

Aka Elizabeth Lynn Casey.

While spending a rainy afternoon at a friend’s house nearly forty years ago, Laura Bradford fell in love with writing over a stack of blank paper, a box of crayons, and a freshly sharpened number two pencil.

Those early attempts at the craft had her writing and illustrating stories for young children. Wise beyond her years, Laura saved her first writing attempt in a hand decorated shoe box (complete with sparkly stickers) and moved on to her next idea. Her second book—O’Casey’s Wish—was so utterly brilliant, she sent it off to a well-known New York publishing house at the tender age of ten, confident she was on the verge of becoming the next Don Freeman (Corduroy) or Shel Silverstein (Giving Tree).

Months later, she received her first form letter rejection.

While she wasn’t of the mindset to save that first crushing blow for posterity, Laura did save the original copy of this particular literary masterpiece in the event the letter was a mistake.

Desperate to prove her flexibility as a writer, Laura soon found herself dabbling in jokes (for her Girl Scout troop’s newsletter), stories of angst (a somewhat autobiographical look at her teenage years), movie reviews (for the Xavier University Newswire), and countless news and feature articles (for newspapers in CT, SC, TN, and MO).

It wasn’t until Laura was home raising children of her own though, that she was finally able to dust off that rainy day dream and bring it back to its original form—writing fiction. Today, she is a bestselling mystery author with Berkley Prime Crime (Penguin Publishing), and an award winning romance author with Harlequin American. She lives in New York with her family.

Oh, and if you meet Laura at a book event in the future, ask her about O’Casey’s Wish. It tends to travel with her everywhere she goes.

Have a wonderful weekend. Thank you for visiting today.

Her Darling Mr. Day (American Royalty series #2) Review

Amazon Purchase Link

My Review

This is the second book in the American Royalty series. It can be read as a stand alone but I do highly recommend reading the series in order. It was a delight to meet up with these characters again in this book. After convincing her parents to Summer in New Orleans you can see the wheels in Flora Wingfield’s mind working, how to snag Teddy Day now that he’s a bachelor once again. All the ladies are clamoring for him and the competition is fierce with so many pretty ladies that Teddy seems to enjoy spinning around the dance floor at the many balls.
Teddy’s main objective right now since being jilted in New York is to put his time and effort into competing with his brother to become the head of the family’s luxury riverboat business in New Orleans. Will Flora, or perhaps one of the other ladies be able to catch his hand and even his heart?
I loved the humor that is intertwined in this story. It makes for a great plot along with escapades and nail biting situations Flora and her sister find themselves in. Full of humor, suspense and romance this is one roller coaster ride you won’t want to exit before it’s end.

Our Kind of People Review

My Review

This is one of those types of books that you just want to savor, so that is exactly what I did.
Helen Wilcox comes from money, she grew up among New York City’s Gilded Age elite.
There is a certain expectation that comes along with this of course. Her marriage is unconventional in the sense that she married down, not in the same class as herself. Her marriage like all of them has it’s ups and downs. Her mother thinks she has married way beneath her class but there is no taking into account who your heart connects with. Yes, she knows her husband’s way of doing things is not conventional. He has a brilliant idea of making the family rich beyond belief if his plan for modern travel plans out but many wealthy investors are needed. Meanwhile Helen is preparing to present her daughters into society. With the family’s ebb and flow of wealth the girls must reexamine what they believe is important in life and even love.
Excellent and highly recommended!

GoodReads Synopsis

Among New York City’s Gilded Age elite, one family will defy convention.

Helen Wilcox has one desire: to successfully launch her daughters into society. From the upper crust herself, Helen’s unconventional—if happy—marriage has made the girls’ social position precarious. Then her husband gambles the family fortunes on an elevated railroad that he claims will transform the face of the city and the way the people of New York live, but will it ruin the Wilcoxes first? As daughters Jemima and Alice navigate the rise and fall of their family—each is forced to re-examine who she is, and even who she is meant to love.

From the author of To Marry an English Lord, the inspiration for Downton Abbey, comes a charming and cutthroat tale of a world in which an invitation or an avoided glance can be the difference between fortune and ruin.

You will get a richly, detailed history of the way things used to be as you imagine yourself being surrounded with the dialect, usual foods of the time, the customs and day to day life.
It is an absolute joy to soak in her words, they go right to my heart.
This author ranks high among my all time favorites. She continues to be the queen of historical fiction.

Life Flight (Extreme Measures #1)

My Review

Wow, Author Lynette Eason starts her new series Extreme Measures with title Life Flight. As soon as you start it you will find yourself on an adrenaline rush. When I started this book I read it all in one sitting til after 2 a.m. I just couldn’t put it down.
The characters are flawed like we all are and this makes it even more realistic.
I enjoyed seeing EMS helicopter pilot Penny Carlton and FBI Special Agent Holt Satterfield’s interaction. He was very protective of her, always having her back but in actuality I think she had his back more often, coming to his rescue many times. They have a good and respectful relationship, both working and personal.
Nonstop action in this one doesn’t allow the characters for much down time. I did enjoy seeing the long standing relationship Penny has with her girlfriends and the time they spend together.
A wicked storm has Penny out in it trying to land her medical helicopter safely on a mountain. Her stress level is already up but she then finds out about a serial killer on the loose in the area she is in. The author writes with such talent her books are very intriguing.
I’ll tell you one thing, I drink a lot of tea and I will never think of it the same way again.

My Review

This was one of my most anticipated books of 2022 and it lived up to what I had imagined it to be.
The eloquent writing style of this author has me hooked on it. Her books are sumptuous, I love the descriptions and can vividly imagine myself there .
It was a delight to be reunited with characters in the previous book in the series and see the progression they made and also meet new characters that I hope to meet up with again in a future book.
The characters are relatable and I enjoyed reading the faith thread throughout the book.
I can’t wait to see what’s next from this author!

Never Leave Me (Waters of Time #2)

My Review

I never thought I would enjoy time travel books that one of the time periods took place in ancient times. After all how could I possibly enjoy reading about a time period that is so different than mine? Well that was before I read Jody Hedlund’s, The Water’s of Time series. Now granted I only gave it a try because I LOVE the author’s books and figured why not give it a shot. The first book was excellent and somehow I thought this book was even better.
Her eloquent writing style left me unable to put the book down once I picked it up making for a late night read, but I’m okay with that.
I felt just as comfortable reading the time-travel areas as I did the modern times. The author pulls you in with her exquisitely researched book. The book has you holding your breath a few times wondering how the characters can get out of the situations they are in. This very intriguing book had me captivated with it’s fast paced suspenseful moments and the romance was spot on.
Highly recommended!

My Review

I have read this author’s work before and was impressed. In this book she has really upped her game.
Her writing style has improved, I am very impressed. I spent too much time reading this past my bedtime but I just couldn’t put it down.
The plot was intense and I’d compare it to the well known, top authors my husband reads with his thriller books.
An intriguing plot, it had all the right elements to keep my attention, lots of action, many law enforcement agencies, terrorism,an international plot, danger around every corner, explosives, murder, etc.etc. This is a high action book that you won’t be able to put down!
Highly recommended. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Amazon Buy Link Here

My Review

I don’t know the author but if I did I would shake her hand, tell her how the book made me feel. This book is truly what historical fiction is, it’s makes you come alive, feel things.
This book takes place in 19944, France. Three adult sisters live by themselves in an old stone cottage on the edge of the village and they just want the war to be over.
The book is about how the war affects them and the choices they make about the war affects them.
I don’t personally have anyone in my family that was in WW11 and I thank all who did serve for their sacrifices but that doesn’t mean I and others weren’t affected by this tragedy we call war.
This book is realism, this could easily have been a written portrayal of three sister’s lives that experienced this.
Life can never be compartmentalized, stuffed into a box and tried to be made neat.
This book is life, it’s also death, blood, violence, caring, making love, compassion, betrayal, fear, wanting to start over, unbelievable grief, picnics in the woods, caring for your neighbors as you would yourself, hiding, delicious meals with family and not knowing where your next meal is coming from,it’s ugly,it’s beautiful.
This book should win an award, it’s beyond amazing!

About The Author

Dinah was born in Malaysia and moved to England at the age of nine.

As a teenager she missed the heat of Malaysia, which left her with a kind of restlessness that led to quite an unusual life. She went to live in Tuscany where she worked as an au-pair for an Italian countess, and there was even a time when Dinah lived with a rock band in a ‘hippie’ commune in Suffolk.

In 1985, the death of her fourteen year old son changed everything and she now draws on the experience of loss in her writing. She sets her books abroad and aims to infuse the love and loss with the extremely seductive beauty of the East.

Her latest book, The Tuscan Contessa, marks a new departure for Dinah as it’s her first set in Europe.

Although Dinah and her husband spent five wonderful years living in a small 16th Century village in the Sierra de Aracena in Northern Andalusia, she’s happy to say they now live close to her family in Gloucestershire along with two crazy Maine Coon cats.
