About The Book

Three weeks before Thanksgiving, bookshop owner Addie Greyborne already has a full plate—and a killer on her case . . .

Addie’s determined to turn a seemingly ordinary November in coastal Greyborne Harbor into one for the books. The windows of her shop display carefully curated works by American writers, including a rare selection of traditional holiday recipes from the influential 19th-century publication Godey’s Ladies Magazine. And then there’s the town’s Civil War-era themed cooking and baking competition, with a hefty cash prize and free publicity going to the winning dish . . .

But when she finds her cousin’s boyfriend murdered, a stunned Addie reluctantly realizes she may be the only person who can blow the cover off a grisly crime. With so many unanswered questions surrounding the victim’s death, Addie must figure out the strange connection between a mysterious vintage briefcase, the disappearance of a first edition copy of Sarah Josepha Hale’s famous nursery rhyme, “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” and a dangerously well-read culprit . . .

Dog Friendly by Victoria Schade-Review

I just love this beachy cover. The dogs look so happy and carefree.

My Review

I have enjoyed every book I’ve read by this author. She is a true dog lover and it shows in her writing.
Our main character is a young burned out vet needing to some time to not think about work and just relax. When a scheduled appointment from a from a regular at the vet’s office turns into an ocean side vacation how could she say no. After all taking care of their sweet pooch for a summer couldn’t be easier, right?
Going here to just relax and walk the dog on Nantucket is all she plans to do. She wants to keep it a secret that she’s a vet and disassociate herself with this title for the summer. No vet business for her.
I really loved her the dogs figured so prominently in the book and it was so fun getting to see their personalities shine.
Summer romance ready or not here it comes in the form of a juice guy selling his expensive homemade health juices from a push cart near the beach.
The interaction between the two is dynamic, loved their conversations and how they take the dogs for walks together.
Now there are some tough subjects touched upon here that the author does a great a great job of addressing and sifting through the important parts.
It looks like our main characters may break up over what Morgan discovers about Nathan’s past. I kept thinking, give him another chance because he seems like such a nice guy and we all change from our past. You’ll have to read it to see if they stay together.
Really enjoyed and recommended!

Where The Road Bends by Rachel Fordham-Review

My Review

What an absolutely incredibly eye opening book.
I am loving that it takes place in Iowa as well. (My daughter lives there.)
This book is about hope, dreams, forgiveness, strength, compassion, understanding and faith.
We seem to all start out with dreams and so many times things don’t go as we plan and we give up.
Dreams here go astray as well and our main characters, whom I just love by the way are flexible and change with their dreams. Their relationship is strong, nurtured by faith, love, compassion, strength and really listening to what each other as to say and adjusting the relationship with this.
Dreams change and need to be nurtured. What was important at one time may no longer as important but we give love and respect to new dreams coming in.
I absolutely loved seeing the child in this book going from a street urchin to a well behaved, secure in his surroundings, part of a family person.
The growth we see in the characters is fantastic. Heartwarming book. I do believe this is my favorite the author has written. It’s a very strong story.

GoodReads Synopsis

As Norah King surveys her family land in Iowa in 1880, she is acutely aware that it is all she has left, and she will do everything in her power to save it–even if that means marrying a man she hardly knows. Days before her wedding, Norah discovers an injured man on her property. Her sense of duty compels her to take him in and nurse him back to health. Little does she realize just how much this act of kindness will complicate her life and threaten the future she’s planned.

Norah’s care does more than aid Quincy Barnes’s recovery–it awakens his heart to possibilities. Penniless and homeless, he knows the most honorable thing he can do is head on down the road and leave Norah to marry her intended. But walking away from the first person to believe in him proves much harder than he imagined.

About The Author

Rachel Fordham has long been fascinated by all things historical or in the words of her children “old stuff”. Often the historical trivia she discovers is woven into her children’s bedtime tales. Despite her love for good stories she didn’t attempt writing a novel until her husband challenged her to do so (and now she’s so glad he did). Since that time she’s often been found typing or researching while her youngest child naps or frantically writing plot twists while she waits in the school pick-up line. In addition to her passion for storytelling she enjoys reading, being outdoors and seeing new places. Rachel lives with her husband and children on an island in Washington state.

The Beach Trap by Ali Brady-Review

This is so much more than just a Summer beach read!

My Review

Based on the cover I was expecting a light, summer beach read with a little romance thrown in and I was okay with that. You know, one of those books that’s good while you’re reading it but so easily forgotten.
What I got was a whole lot more.
Oh my, this book is so heartwarming and full of emotion.
As preteens two girls go to the same summer camp and become best friends,do everything together and promise to stay best friends for life. While at the camp the girls come to realize they have the same father so they’re half-sisters. Feeling betrayed, hurt and confused they break off all contact with each other and these feelings have years to fester.
Years later they learn their father has left his beach house to both of them.
Now these two sisters couldn’t be more different, one is a star influencer, polished, highly fashionable, always on and ready to take that filtered photo for her adoring fans. The other is down to earth, sensible and ready to get the job done, whatever job that may be.
The stipulation is the girls can not just sell the beach house but how can they possibly get along to make the decisions concerning the fixing up of the beach house when they can’t even carry on a normal conversation without screaming at each other?
From one fiasco to the next from guy trouble to fashion mishaps and home improvement flops can the sisters learn how to be civil to each other?
I enjoyed seeing the relationship between the sisters growing and changing.
There is so much family heartache and misunderstanding and blame that finally comes to light.
Through an olive branch being extended and many talks and tears there is light ahead.
Very heartwarming. I’ll be reading this one again!

First Line Friday- The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle

Happy Friday & welcome to the First Line Friday hosted by Carrie at Reading is my Superpower.  It’s time to grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line. Today, I’m featuring the first line of The Wedding Dress Circle by Jennifer Ryan which published May 31,2022.

I have been on a roll recently reading historical fiction and look forward to reading this one.

First Line

“I found it” the Reverend Ben Carlisle’s voice called from the attic.

About The Book

Three plucky women lift the spirits of home-front brides in wartime Britain, where clothes rationing leaves little opportunity for pomp or celebration—even at weddings—in this heartwarming novel based on true events, from the bestselling author of The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir.

After renowned fashion designer Cressida Westcott loses both her home and her design house in the London Blitz, she has nowhere to go but the family manor house she fled decades ago. Praying that her niece and nephew will be more hospitable than her brother had been, she arrives with nothing but the clothes she stands in, at a loss as to how to rebuild her business while staying in a quaint country village.

Her niece, Violet Westcott, is thrilled that her famous aunt is coming to stay—the village has been interminably dull with all the men off fighting. But just as Cressida arrives, so does Violet’s conscription letter. It couldn’t have come at a worse time; how will she ever find a suitably aristocratic husband if she has to spend her days wearing a frumpy uniform and doing war work?

Meanwhile, the local vicar’s daughter, Grace Carlisle, is trying in vain to repair her mother’s gown, her only chance of a white wedding. When Cressida Westcott appears at the local Sewing Circle meeting, Grace asks for her help—but Cressida has much more to teach the ladies than just simple sewing skills.

Before long, Cressida’s spirit and ambition galvanizes the village group into action, and they find themselves mending wedding dresses not only for local brides, but for brides across the country. And as the women dedicate themselves to helping others celebrate love, they might even manage to find it for themselves.

The Last Dress From Paris by Jade Beer-Book Review

My Review

This is a most delightful book with it’s dual time-line you’ll get pulled into two delightful stories that just seamlessly mesh.
Lucille has a special and loving relationship with her Grandmother Sylvie and will do anything for her.
When her grandmother asks her to go from England to Paris to find a priceless Dior dress she believes she’ll be home quickly and easily with the task completed.
What she doesn’t count on is needing to rent a French apartment and finding a side of her grandmother she had never know about.
The book kept me spellbound while reading about the 1950’s glamour of the fashionable Dior gowns,an opulent lifestyle a forbidden affair, well kept secrets and a heartbreaking betrayal.
So many glamorous Dior gowns each representing a special time. You can practically feel the heaviness and sumptuousness of the velvet and other lush materials of the vintage gowns in your hands.
Secrets and heartbreak comes alive in this book I was unable to put down!

Pub Date: 21 Jun 2022
I received a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

GoodReads Synopsis

London, 2017. There’s no one Lucille adores more than her grandmother. So when her beloved Granny Sylvie asks for Lucille’s assistance with a small matter, she’s happy to help. The next thing she knows, Lucille is on a train to Paris, tasked with retrieving a priceless Dior dress. But not everything is as it seems, and what Lucille finds in a small Parisian apartment will have her scouring the city for answers to a question that could change her entire life.

Paris, 1952. Postwar France is full of glamour and privilege, and Alice Ainsley is in the middle of it all. As the wife to the British ambassador to France, Alice’s job is to see and be seen–even if that wasn’t quite what she signed up for. Her husband showers her with jewels, banquets, and couture Dior dresses, but his affection has become distressingly elusive. As the strain on her marriage grows, Alice’s only comfort is her bond with her trusted lady’s maid, Marianne. But when a new face appears in her drawing room, Alice finds herself yearning to follow her heart…no matter the consequences.

The City of Light comes alive in this lush, evocative tale that explores the ties that bind us together, the truths we hold that make us who we are, and the true meaning of what makes someone family.

About The Author

Hello!

I’m Jade. I’m a novelist, a mother to two young daughters and I live in the beautiful English countryside. After decades working in glossy magazines in London, I now live in the Cotswolds. It’s where my husband and I used to spend romantic weekends plotting our future together, long before children came along, and is now where I write my books.

My latest novel, The Last Dress From Paris, is inspired by a visit I made to the Victoria & Albert museum back in January 2019 for the Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition. When I left the museum that day, I knew so much more about the work of Christian Dior and how he defined an era of fashion. Much has been written of his legacy. But what of the women he dressed, I wondered. What happened to all of them and their beautiful gowns when they left the boutique for the final time? What would the women, Dior’s clients, whisper from behind the glass cabinets if they could? What would they tell me about the occasion on which they wore these dresses?

Women have always fascinated me. I think it comes from seeing first-hand how truly brilliant we can be and how wonderfully flawed. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredibly talented women throughout my career as a journalist and editor – ones who juggle the most all-encompassing careers with family and friendships and everything else that life throws at them. They often make it look so easy. But we all know it’s not. And that need to present one version of yourself to the world, while keeping the grittier, less polished reality under wraps, is a thread that runs strongly through all my novels and especially The Last Dress From Paris.

In my former job as the editor of Conde Nast Brides, I shared my working life with editors of some of the glossiest magazines in the world – Vogue, Tatler, Glamour – and I had the enormous privilege of travelling the world and sitting front row at beautiful fashion shows and working with the world’s leading florists, cake makers and stylists. But I also took a daily peek into the lives of young women who were experiencing one of the most intense times of their lives – planning their wedding days. This, above everything else, was the fascinating bit. Hearing their thoughts, fears, worries and ambitions for the future. This really powerful cocktail of glamour and reality is there, I hope, on the pages of all my books.

About The Author

Amy Pershing — https://amypershingauthor.com/ — is a lifelong mystery lover and wordsmith who spent every summer of her childhood on Cape Cod, was an editor, a restaurant reviewer and a journalist before sitting down to write the Cape Cod Foodie Mystery series, including A SIDE OF MURDER — which Elizabeth Gilbert called “the freshest, funniest mystery I have ever read” — and AN EGGNOG TO DIE FOR — which Kirkus Reviews gave a starred review, saying, “A delightful sleuth, a complex mystery, and lovingly described cuisine: a winner for both foodies and mystery mavens.” The third book in the series, MURDER IS NO PICNIC, will be published in the summer of 2022.

In her previous incarnations Amy was an assistant editor at Viking Penguin, a restaurant reviewer for Playbill magazine’s Restaurant Reporter, and a journalist at the Rome (Italy) Daily American before eventually going on to lead employee communications at a global bank. A few years ago (with the final college tuition bill paid), she waved goodbye to Wall Street in order to write the THE CAPE COD FOODIE MYSTERIES, featuring Samantha Barnes, a disgraced but resilient ex-chef and the world’s most reluctant YouTube star. While Sam tries to balance her new job as the local paper’s “Cape Cod Foodie” with her complicated love life, a posse of just-slightly-odd friends, a falling-down house and a ginormous puppy, she also discovers a new talent – a propensity for falling over dead bodies … and for solving crime.

Sea Glass Cottage (Hope Harbor #8) By Irene Hannon Book Review

I am so excited to hear there will be more books released in this series.

My Review

Revisiting Hope Harbor,Oregon is such a delight. It is a true homecoming to this charming coastal town where the characters are always welcoming and more than willing to lend a hand or an ear when needed.
Christi Reece is a woman out of options, owing money she doesn’t have she desperately tracks down a man from her past sure he can help her.
Author Jack Colby has made a new start, far away of the humiliation caused to him by Christi in what feels like a lifetime ago. Getting a shock he realizes she has tracked him down here and he wants no parts of her or the past memories of their failed romance.
What ensues is a surprise to both of them I’d say. She unfortunately has to stay in town longer than she had wanted to.
I really enjoyed making the reconnection with the characters from previous books, especially the “taco guy” who always has a kind word and good advice to pass along.
Christi wants Jack to forgive her for the past and for him to put his trust in her. As he starts to rewarm to her he enjoys her company more and more but will it lead to a romantic reconnection?
So heartwarming, I enjoyed seeing down on her luck Christi get another chance at a better life.
There was a bit of a mystery surrounding an unfinished cottage and this had a fitting resolution as well. Superb book and I look forward to more books in this warm and engaging series.
