TOP TEN TUESDAY
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want. Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to The Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
This week’s theme is bookish goals for 2024.
This is the first year I’m setting goals for myself as a reader. I’ve always read a lot but this year I don’t want to just randomly read. I’ve done a lot of reading for authors in the past and that will continue but I’m cutting back on accepting requests.
Cut back on NetGalley requests this year. I’ve done this and will continue to do so. So many books I’ll want to request when I look at my backlist, I see a similar book so cutting back has become easier.
My NetGalley percentage several years and (mumble) books ago was at 80%. Less than a week ago I got it to 76% after being at 75 for what seems like forever. I’m not going to set a percentage I want to get to but I just want it to continue to move upwards.
Read all of my NetGalley 2021 backlist which is as far back as my books go. I joined in 2017. I’ve read 3 so far.
Clear all of my Christmas/Winter books off my NetGalley shelf, so all from 2021, 2022 and 2023. I’ve read 5 so far.
Keep up with my GoodReads challenges I’m doing. These challenges have really helped me clear books off my shelves and I need to stop forgetting about them.
Read blog tour books sooner when I get them. Sometimes I wait until the day before my stop on the blog tour to read them and then I don’t even want to read them because I feel pressure to read them.
Sign up for less blog tours. I’ve already started doing this in the past few months of the last year and will continue to do it so I can read books I already have.
Go to less book sales.
Allow myself to read books I get from NetGalley when I want to, for the most part. If I get a book that publishes in 2 months, and I want to read it now I’m going to and not wait to read it closer to the date of publication.
Read longer books. I have several books over 400 pages and several over 500 pages. Longer books can feel like they are dragging but I want to read some of them and get them off my shelf.
I’m sure there are more bookish things I want to do this year but I can’t think of them right now.
Have you made bookish goals for yourself this year?
Enjoy your day. Stay safe and warm. We got snow again last night and it’s snowing now. I’m not going anywhere near it.

All very realistic goals, Deanne. It seems a lot of people want to read their NG backlist books. I am not setting it as a goal, but also want to get those Christmas books from previous years read before 2024 ones come out. We shall see how it goes. Good luck with all these goals. 🤞😀📚💞

Thank you, Carla. so far, I’ve been successful in cutting back. Here’s to us both being able to keep our NetGalley requesting down this year.

Right! Way too many excellent choices. I’m trying really hard to cut back and so far, I have. Best of luck to us both in keeping up with that this whole year.

Great goals, Deanne, and very similar to mine. A lot of us seem to be cutting back on Net Galley and book tours. What Goodreads challenges are you doing?

Thanks Cindy. Best of luck on your challenges this year. I am in several goodreads groups but have recently only been doing challenges in the group, A Turn of the Page.

Woohoo! Now you’re running with the big crowd. That’s exciting. I think you’re going to love it. I’ve been there since 2017. If you have any questions I can probably help you. My one piece of advice is don’t go crazy requesting a bunch when you first join. I’ve also noticed if you get declined by a publisher , do request from them again each book has a certain number of request they honor. As they get to know you you will get approved for the bigger name publishers and then you will start to get autoapproved for publishers which means you’ll be able to automatically download anything that particular publisher has without having to request it.

How do I get books? There are none at the moment.

Go to NetGalley website and sign in. Then when you’re on your account at the top of the page you will see Find Titles, scroll down to recently added books.

When you’re on that page also top left you will see find titles scroll down to the category browse books then go to read now. Read now books are available to everyone without requesting. This is a good way for publishers to get to know you so they can approve you for books.

Believe me it’s a learning process. You have to basically take a self-guided tour around the website. You’ll get the hang of it quickly. Let me know if you need anything else. You’re going to have fun.

Your goals are good ones. I think they will be freeing for you and give you a greater feeling of being in control of your reading choices. I’m cutting back on NetGalley too. Between NG and my book club, which I do enjoy, I don’t feel like I have the freedom to read more books by an author I discover, read books on my physical bookshelf, or reread books I remember enjoying. There are just so many good books!!!

Reading everyone’s goals for improving their NetGalley ratios has made me laugh A LOT. Mine is at 4%. FOUR. And yet I still get approved for tons of books. It’s ridiculous! I really need to work on getting it higher, or at least not making it worse, LOL. Good luck with all your goals.
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

Thank you Susan. I think I can crush it, especially if I sprain another ankle soon so I can keep up this reading pace 😂😜. Best of luck with your goals too but I wouldn’t recommend spraining anything

Your Netgalley % is impressive.. Mine is way too low and seeing Susan’s comment above, I now know I am not alone 🙂
Good luck with your goals this year

Thank you. I do a ton of reading, especially with this sprained ankle which will take 6 weeks to heal. I’m averaging a book a day. Don’t feel too bad about a low percentage , even when I had one it never held me back from being approved for just about everything. Best of luck to you too. 😀
